Knowledge base. Mr. Bancroft taught a descriptive writing lesson to his fourth grade students. Prior to beginning todays lesson, Mr. Bancroft reminded his students of a previous lesson in which the students practiced using descriptive and detailed writing. His lesson demonstrated knowledge of both the academic content as referenced by the Common Core State Standards and the developmental needs of his fourth grade students. 2. Communication skills. Mr. Bancroft gave clear directions for his behavioral and academic expectations. Mr. Bancroft used proper grammar when speaking to his class. 3. Management of student's behavior. Mr. Bancroft had positive expectations for his students. During instructional time, he used varied (i.e.

bell tone) and positive reminders to encourage her students to make good choices (i.e. This is a quiet task; I should just hear wrappers crunching.). When a student said a disrespectful word, Mr. Bancroft swiftly and assertively stated his expectations. The message was received by his students (as was evidenced by the silence) and then Mr. Bancroft moved on with his lesson. This was handled with the confidence of veteran teacher. One student in Mr. Bancrofts class was having a difficult day. Mr. Bancroft was sensitive to his needs yet maintained his expectations for his learning. 4. Management of learning progress. Mr. Bancroft started his writing lesson by stating it would be torture because the students would be given a candy bar yet they could not eat it. Beginning the lesson with this statement hooked the students and they were excited to see what would come next. The candy bar was meant to be used as inspiration for writing complete and descriptive sentences using the senses of sight, touch, smell, taste, and finally, the feeling the students have once the chocolate is finished. The students were very excited to begin this lesson! It was effective for your students when you held up two fingers and stated You have this many minutes to finish writing about what the candy bar looks like. Almost all of your students looked up and thus both heard and saw your expectations. 5. Lesson planning. Mr. Bancroft provided a detailed lesson plan. His lesson utilized an anticipatory set to activate prior knowledge, a clearly thought out lesson procedure, closure, and an informal assessment. 6. Lesson presentation. Mr. Bancroft presented information using multiple modalities. See comments under management of learning, lesson planning, and use of materials. 7. Use of materials and resources. Mr. Bancroft used a very motivating writing prompt (candy bars!) to provide inspiration for writing quality descriptions using the senses. Within the new lesson taught today, Mr. Bancroft made reference to activities and lessons which had occurred previously. This allowed the students to connect and extend new learning with previous instruction. 8. Evaluation of self, students, and teaching. Mr. Bancroft has high expectations for himself and his students. 9. Professionalism. Mr. Bancroft was dressed very professionally and carried himself with confidence. He has developed a strong working relationship with his colleagues. 10. Human relations skills. Mr. Bancroft is personable and appears to have an excellent repertoire with his students. Mrs. Menhennick shared that Mr. Bancroft is so caring and good with his students. He has a calm yet playful demeanor that his students respond very well to.

Student teacher's progress to this point is: More Than Satisfactory Additional Comments: Mr. Bancroft has become part of the classroom and school community. Mrs. Menhennick shared that

she is very pleased to have Mr. Bancroft as a student teacher. During the next two weeks, Mr. Bancroft and I discussed a focus on the following goals: (1) make certain to have students attention before giving instructions and (2) take over the planning and instruction of the classroom. I look forward to my next visit on 2/19 in the afternoon. I will contact you as we get closer to set a time. Thank you for a wonderful afternoon in your fourth grade classroom!
