Standard Two | Content Area and Pedagogical Knowledge This artifact is a lesson plan that I created for language

arts class. It addresses Professional Teaching Standard 2: Content Area and Pedagogical Knowledge, knowledge indicator: C, and performance indicator: D and E. I chose this artifact because it shows my ability to understand different kinds of learning while engaging the students in processes of critical thinking and using technology. The artifact also shows my capability to adapt what I am doing to help each student develop an understanding of the material. This artifact is an appropriate representation of Standard Two because it exemplifies my ability to tailor an activity to the many kinds of learning students do. The lesson plan shows the students are using recall to remember concepts we have previously learned about spelling, memorization because the words need to be learned for the spelling test at the end of the week, and problem-solving/invention because the students sometimes need to sound out a word to try to figure out how to spell it (C). The lesson plan explains the students spell the words out while the teacher writes them on the Promethean. The technology helps the students visualize the words and lets them look at the words again later to make sure they have them spelled correctly (D). Creating the lesson plan with many possible student response answers helped predict what the students would say and have trouble with. When doing the actual lesson, the lesson plan encouraged the teacher to describe concepts and words in different ways if the students were having difficulty understanding them (E). This artifact demonstrates my growth and development as a teacher because I can now manipulate my lessons better to fit the needs and learning styles of my students. The lesson plan has encouraged me to think of new ways for the students to think critically and keep them actively engaged. Creating lesson plans help me think outside the box by imagining as many possible answers the students will have to my questions as possible, and that also aids me with inventing new questions to make sure the concepts and material are understandable to the students. I want to try to avoid confusion and address any problems I foresee before they happen.
