FIat Tire Extravaganza!

AnaIysis
Target Audience: College students who just moved away from home.

Things to think about:
!
How do you know it's flat? (does it need to be changed or just need air?)
!
Safety: How to pull over, hazard lights, etc.
!
How to locate and use tools.
!
What to do after you have changed tire.

Pamphlet will be handed out at freshman orientation. t will be something they can keep in the
glove box of their car.

Design
!
The objectives of the instruction: To be abIe to change a fIat tire.
!
Motivational strategies: To heIp the student in becoming more seIf-sufficient in case of a tire
emergency.
!
The introductory presentation of content: Use a picture of a coIIege student with a fIat tire.
!
Testing and evaluation strategies: An evaIuation wouId have to be to have a coIIege student
show how to change a tire using onIy the pamphIet provided.
!
The instructor materials that will be needed: Pictures of different tooIs and tires in the
situation.
!
Even though it is covered in many manuaIs as to how to change a tire, we need to
understand that this needs to be presented in a simpIe way for a coIIege student. A
manuaI wouId not have the most "coIIege friendIy" version.

DeveIop
!
What is the most appropriate medium for instruction? There are many appropriate mediums
we couId use. We have chosen to use a pamphIet that can be stored in the student's gIove
box with step by step instructions on how to change a fIat tire. This pamphIet shouId be
seIf-expIanatory as most student's wiII onIy use it in case of an emergency, they are not
IikeIy to use it to "practice" changing a tire if they don't need to.
!
How can the visual design of the instructional materials support and facilitate learning? By using
pictures the student shouId be abIe to change a tire fairIy easiIy even if names of tooIs and
car parts are not known. By Iooking at a picture they wiII understand more easiIy what is
to be used and how it is to be done.
!
Are the materials "usable" or do they actually get in the way of learning? Yes, they can use this
step by step pamphIet that heIps guide them through the process.
!
This pamphIet is designed to be a directionaI guide, for the reason that coIIege students
do not care for the "why" but simpIy the "how to."
!
Are the instructional materials affordable given the budget of the project? PamphIets can be
expensive, but it wouId be the onIy expense. The more we print, the cheaper the cost is.

Students don't want the Why's They just want the how to's and be done with fixing their tires.
