Analysis/Reflection of learning I have found Lunch Duty to be an eye-opening experience. You can really get a sense of part of the pulse of the school. I am able to observe the behavior of students, but also the behavior of cafeteria staff and school aides. Im learning that things dont always go smoothly. Lunch time is the students downtime and their way of releasing their energy. Our school does not have a playground for recess, during their lunch period, so I find this to be quite a challenge and dilemma. Students go to the auditorium after they eat, and some kind of show or movie is put on for them. Some watch and many do not if the program does not interest them. One of the highlights has watching some of the upper grade students supervising the Kindergartners. You can see how some are natural leaders and are able to have the Kindergartners listen and follow them. Others are not as successful. I have been able to e-mail my observations and concerns to my principal, and she has followed through with some of my recommendations in our weekly staff newsletter. We have also had discussions and conversations about why certain things are the way they are. When you are in a position of authority, students will often respond differently. At our school, we are very fortunate to be able to supervise large numbers of students without too much disruption. This has been an enlightening experience, as Im forced to see issues from the perspective of the teachers and the perspective of the administration. There are so many problems and issues that are brought up, and the staff and administration has to prioritize and see what issues can immediately be

resolved and others that seem to come up again and again. Some things are always put on the back burner and those issues seem to never go away, as Ive served on this committee for over 10 years now. It can become frustrating for both sides, as its difficult to see make the other side see or understand why things are the way they are. Class List Report and Directions My principal gave me this task to double check the accuracy of the Class List Report. She said this is something she verifies on her own. With high-stakes testing and Teacher Evaluations, the accuracy of these reports is essential. I was able to double-check all of the data and also went to her with one concern because a teacher was on maternity leave, but her name was still attached to that class. I asked my principal if I could provide some professional development for staff members, after school, on a volunteer basis. I was thrilled to see that six staff members signed up. We were able to share about best practices in using interactive whiteboards. I was also able to give them a refresher course and show them more resources that they could use in the classroom. One of the members provided an excellent suggestion and recommending giving them an opportunity to actually demo what they are doing in their classroom. I plan to ask him next time if hed like to share something. Im always offering my technology expertise, and asking staff to let me know if they need any assistance with technology integration. Its great when someone has a project that they need help with. Someone reached out to me via my Twitter network and asked if one of our first grade teachers was interested in having a Skype conference with one of their first grade teachers in Florida. They wanted to do a cultural exchange and learn from each other. It felt great to be able to help implement this and make it

Log/Reflection and email correspondence After my technology workshop, a teacher reached out to me to see if she could get a document camera to use in helping her students with writing and other instruction. Its great being able to tell teachers about the technology and instructional tools that are available to them and then have them think of ways they can use it in their classroom instruction. I feel this is one of the important roles of an instructional leader. For the past few years, our school has been part of NYCs, Chinese New Year Parade. Our school performs the Lion Dance along the streets of Chinatown. This is a wonderful way of connecting with students and parents in another setting. I see the commitment of parents and students to the community, and its a wonderful way of celebrating the holiday, along with school pride. We become a staple of the community, and there is pride in representing our community. This has been an invaluable experience, as I have been helping my principal with this for the past 3 years and learning about one method she uses to disseminate information and announcements to the staff. Rather than holding an after-school meeting once a month, this is a much more effective way of getting weekly news out to the staff. Plus, everything is archived, so everyone on staff is responsible for the information in these newsletters. I helped our school set up a Google Apps Education site for our school, where each teacher has a school e-mail account. My principal writes up a newsletter almost every week and forwards me a copy of it. I then help her to edit it and see if any corrections need

Log, e-mail correspondence What an empowering experience it is to have a live author come to visit our fifth graders and to give a writing workshop and share about his process. This shows me the importance of bringing in experts and mentors for staff and students. Its inspiring and helps establish a system that promotes learning, collaboration, and communication. This author (Phil Bildner) came to our school because one of our staff members used to teach with her. This also shows how we can tap into connections through our staff and community. It was an amazing two days, as I was able to listen to the principal share about our vision, our school culture and climate to future principals and Office of New Schools staff members. I was able to listen to her share the history of her 20+ year tenure, answer many questions, and also listen to staff members share about our school. Since Ive been at the school for the past 15 years, I was able to witness how far the school has come because of my principals leadership. I was able to see what a strong and effective leader can do, along with effective teachers and staff members. Its a total team effort, but it cant happen with strong leadership at the top. I learned the importance of trust between staff and also that support must be provided so that everyone has the opportunity to succeed and excel in terms of providing high quality instruction for our students. My principal has an open door policy, so we are able to have conversations about school operations. I am learning more and more about the behind the scenes work and decisions made by the administration. I am learning that teachers dont necessarily know all that is taken into consideration when decisions are made or protocols are set. Things

Hand-outs, Notes, and For the past several years, I have been able to attend Reflections one or two days of Channel Thirteens Celebration of Teaching and Learning Conference. Its an amazing gathering of educators from all over the world and there are many workshops, panels, and speakers to choose from. Its always a bit overwhelming, as its hard to figure out what to choose. I usually attend workshops that relate to technology and education. Oftentimes, there are authors and speakers who speak on education, and I see the importance of Professional Development for educators and leaders. My AP paid out of her own pocket to attend! Luckily, I have been able to get complementary tickets from sponsors. Otherwise, I probably would not have been able to attend. Connections are important, and its always good to ask! Notes, Online Correspondence, and Reflection One of the best ways to learn is to keep asking questions when the opportunities arise. I am grateful for this time with my principal, as she is very forthright with information, and I am learning more about how some of her decisions are made. At the same time, I know there is a LONG journey ahead, and theres always more to learn.

Thanks to my principal, I was able to connect with Principal Phyllis Tam of MS 131 and after some e-mails and a face-to-face interview, she graciously accepted me as a summer intern. One of the great things about being in the 21st Century is the fact that we can find out so much information online, prior to an interview. I was able to look at MS 131s progress reports, Quality Review, and other information from the internet. There was also some information about the principal and what she has done for the school, too. I was excited to see that she is a proponent of technology use, balanced with real life experiences for her students. I am looking forward to working in a middle school setting with many students who are English Language Learners. I know I will learn an extensive amount from Principal Tam. The Assistant Principal invited me to meetings concerning the Standardized Tests that are happening in April. He demonstrated how he puts together all of the accommodations that need to occur on those days. The bigger the school, the more accommodations need to be made. Some students need scribes, some need extra time, some need separate rooms, etc. It is a lot to coordinate. As a classroom teacher in the past, I took these things for granted. Now, I realize what a huge coordination it is for administration to figure out and make sure each student is getting the appropriate accommodations, as there could be legal ramifications. You introduced us to a great online resource, and thanks to you, we can learn more about the competencies at our own pace. The site has some excellent videos, along with websites, simulations, and handouts. Although its in BETA mode, its running pretty smoothly, with some minor glitches. When it comes to online resources, it can quickly become quite overwhelming, as you see the immense amount of free and useful information out there. The biggest investment is time, and unfortunately, that is something

that we cannot add more to in a 24-hour day. Seeing this project from beginning (see last month) to end was very rewarding. We were able to use technology to connect with another school from another state. It was a rewarding experience for all the parties involved. It was great seeing a fourth grade class starting the day off with dance, music, and movement. This has been a wonderful Arts Program in our school, which I took part in when I taught 4th Grade. Like many things, each year the students get better, as the bar is raised and we realize how much more they are capable of doing. For so many of the students, this seemed like a wonderful way to start off the day. Afterwards, I took them back to their classrooms where they worked on a math assessment performance task. I saw how much more complex the mathematical thinking that is expected from fourth graders, as they take on challenging multistep problems, where its not just about the calculations, but also explaining their thinking and reasoning. Our school has been successful, so we often get visitors from other schools wanting to see what we do and how we do it. Today, we had some educators who wanted to look at our ELLs. Having to opportunity to see our teachers and students in action makes me feel proud of all the work weve put into making our school successful. Being out of the classroom now, I see how much more our students are doing at a younger and younger age, as the bar has been raised every year. I've heard more than once from visitors, I wish I could work at a school like this. I know how fortunate I am to have been at PS 130 for the past 15 years. It felt amazing to hear from some of the teachers in my school about their fears, frustrations, assumptions, and

Notes, and Reflections dreams in terms of technology. Theres nothing like getting feedback back from the frontlines, because it is the teachers who know what their students really need in terms of curriculum and instruction. I demonstrated how easily they could create their own classroom websites, and once they became comfortable with that, how each one of their students could develop one, too. I always try to push for creativity and innovation when it comes to technology, because so often it is not used in that way. The feedback from the teachers and you was terrific, and it is days like these where I feel like, Yes, I could help lead a school. Google Doc, Log, Notes, and Reflection We have had the same AUSSIE Literacy Coach for 15 years. She has been brilliant and a pillar in terms of our success. It was great meeting with her and seeing how she plans her meetings which I myself have participated in over the years. I was able to get a sense of how she plans and caters to our staffs needs. She wants to challenge us, but not overburden us with unnecessary or unproductive work. Since she has had less and less time with our staff, she maximizes her effectiveness and efficiency. This was a wonderful opportunity to look at student work and see the finished products after a rigorous process of planning, researching, and writing. I could see how proud the students were of their accomplishments, and it was great having conversations with the students and see how they really made the subject of Healthy Living their own. It was also nice to see how the teacher invited the parents and how many came to support their children in their hard work. intranet site. Teacher Support 3/5/12, 3/6/12 (2 hours) Assisting School Librarian after her computer stopped working. E-mails, Phone Calls, Reflection I always knew this day would come, and it finally did. Our school library computer, which had records of all the books in the library, along with the students and what books were checked out, was getting older and more outdated. Over the years, I asked her to ask about whether the old software and scanner that the school used was compatible with the newer computers, which had updated operating system. She never did, so when her computer wouldnt turn back on, I knew the school library would be dysfunctional and/or nonoperational for weeks. So, I immediately did research and troubleshooting to see what I could do, because I knew reaching out now would not provide immediate results. In the end, I was able to dispose of her old computer, transfer all the files from the dead computer to an updated computer from the lab, and install a new bar code scanner. Everything worked out well, and the School Librarian was very appreciative for the support and efforts. She knows how fortunate we were that everything worked out for the better. I was able to help out two teachers with separate issues, and it was a great feeling to be able to help them. The first teacher had a problem with a distressed child (3rd grader) who was throwing a tantrum in the gymnasium. He would not get up from the floor, which made it impossible for the teacher to continue with the rest of the class. I was able to get the child to walk with me and calmed him down. I asked him to apologize to the teacher, which he did after class. A second grade teacher just received a new student teacher who she was having issues with. I was somewhat familiar with the student teacher, so I could empathize with this teacher. I was able to e-mail the principal without providing specific details, but asked what teachers should do when they observe things that concern them. After meeting with the principal about

this issue, she said she welcomed feedback and would speak to the teacher regarding the student teacher. I learned that when we begin a conversation, it helps to diffuse situations and find solutions to problems. One other conversation that had to be brought up to administration was the issue of hugging students, especially in an elementary school setting. When is it appropriate to hug or is it appropriate to hug, especially with media hypersensitivity? How do we deal with this issue? School Survey Participation 3/26/12, 3/27/12 (1.5 hours) Assisting Parent Coordinator in reminding parents to fill out school surveys. Log, Reflections It was a wonderful opportunity to stand in front of the school and meet and greet parents, reminding them to fill out the surveys or thanking them if they already did. When you stand in front of the school on a Monday morning and see all the parents bringing their children to school, you see how everyone is committed to the education of the children. Every year, we have an allocation for hardware and software for our entire school. Its usually roughly ten to twelve grand for each. I meet with the principal to assess the tech needs of the school, and from there, I put together budget proposal allocations on how I feel the money should be spent. The principal trusts me with my decisions, but we have conversations in meetings or online to make sure she is clear on everything I am spending for the school in terms of technology. I also often have to reach out to vendors to find out further information about the equipment that is listed on (www.shopdoe.com or https://dfoforms.nycenet.edu/ecatalog/Logon.aspx) Its amazing how something as simple as the number of students in a school can really play a HUGE impact on a schools reorganization. Its especially difficult for elementary schools because its difficult to predict how many people will apply or decide to go elsewhere in September for Kindergarten. With a gifted program,

this is even more difficult to come up with a solid number, as parents can change their mind up until October. Budgeting is so interesting because of how money is earmarked and as we mentioned in our advisory group, theres often a use it, or lose it in the budgeting. I am thankful for this experience over the years. I realize that sometimes you have to make these quick decisions, and you do your best in using the money that is given to you in the best way you can. Last minute decisions sometimes dont always yield the greatest results.

Competency Personal Leadership Event/Date/No. of hours Description of event Lunch Duty Assisting in the 4/4/12 supervision of (1 hour) students during their lunch period. Artifact Log/Reflection Analysis/Reflection of learning Its great to know that I can now assist the principal with this when the lunchroom staff is short-handed. I continually find it an amazing opportunity to watch students during this period, as they interact with their peers and with adults, as well. I still wish there was a better solution to having students go straight to the auditorium after eating lunch. The principal met with me regarding how she handled a situation where a school aide called 911 to report three students who she felt were a threat to her. It was draining for my principal because this incident occurred during the high-stakes standardized tests, and my principal had to have various meetings with the superintendent, the unions, and other NYCDOE employees. Its been an unfortunate situation with this particular staff member, and now she has been suspended from working at our school and is reporting to Central until the investigation/case is resolved. I feel that high-stakes standardized tests are playing such a huge impact on public education in NYC. I decided to blog about it and asked Lisa Nielsen if she would allow me to guest blog on her website. She put it up during the testing period, and it felt great to have a voice out there. It was great touching base with both the principal and advisor about the internship program. I appreciated the feedback and talking about what needs to be done going forward. I feel extremely fortunate to have all the support in both my principal and my advisor. I continue to learn so much from both of their experiences and am grateful for all of their advice and wisdom on what it takes to lead successful schools.

I received an e-mail about helping to volunteer for a Week of the Young Child event in my neighborhood. It was the first time that I volunteered for NYCAEYC, and it was a great networking with other educators and individuals and organizations that work with young children. This event had plenty of activities and games for children ages 3-9. I was in charge of the setting up the block area, and it amazing working with young children and seeing how they interact and learn through block play. There was so much creativity and innovation! Once again, my principal gave me this task to double check the accuracy of the Class List Report. The onus is on each school to verify the accuracy of these reports. Every year, we devote one Saturday to helping the fourth graders with final preparations for the 3-day ELA test. Every fourth grader is invited to come to the school to take a mock test, where all 3 days of a test are administered in 3 sessions to small groups of students, and then we go over them, along with strategies. This is to give students a feel for the test so they are less anxious during the actual days of the tests. Almost every fourth grader does show up, as parents understand the importance of this exam. After all, for most middle schools in NYC, its the ONE measurement tool they use to see who gets into specialized schools and accelerated programs. I proctored the exam for 6 days with two scribes for two students. With a few hundred students testing and many with special accommodations (extra time, scribing, English Language Learners), it was a real drain of resources for our school. We hired at least 6 subs every day, so that teachers could have their common prep times, because clusters were used to proctor the exams. It was also interesting to see the

In the past, we have voted for 5 days at 30 minutes each week, instead of 4 days of 37.5 minutes When we first ordered interactive whiteboards for the school, the principal and I thought of creating an online application for teachers to apply for this technology, so that we could start off with those who were committed to using the technology by agreeing to attend afterschool professional development. Eventually, they would turn-key the use of this technology to their peers. Were using a similar approach to this new technology. I feel its important to meet as a staff to disseminate information and to receive feedback from the chapter. Its alarming sometimes to see that more members are not involved. Fortunately, we have online correspondence, but I think its sometimes beneficial to physically meet together. Sometimes, this could be a symbol of strength and support. Some take this for granted. Its been great helping to support colleagues who are applying to leadership programs by providing them with feedback on their resumes and applications. Two of my colleagues are applying for a leadership program at Baruch College, and I have been giving them my full support. She has been a godsend for my principal, and she has basically carried the school in terms of professional development for our school, especially in literacy development. It has been wonderful learning how she plans for our staff, and how she always manages to make their/our work meaningful. The teachers who participated in the staff development felt that they accomplished quite a lot in the three periods that each grade was released for the day. We developed an online template for each grade to use in presenting their inquiry team studies to their colleagues. I have been able to plan with her on how we will be conducting our Staff Development Day in June, since our principal will not be back yet from rehab. Still learning this software and hoping we can use it in helping us in the gathering of data from classroom observations. I hope to spend some of the summer really learning how to use the program for next Fall. I was able to develop a Google Spreadsheet Template for teachers to use in recording, presenting, and analyzing their student data in order to show their initial and final data on their students performance tasks. The spreadsheet is able to automatically create a graph so that student progress can be seen and analyzed. This has been an eye-opening experience for me. Talking about classroom observations is one thing, but actually going through the process has been an immense learning experience for me. Also, having the

opportunity to see my colleagues in action was amazing. I was able to observe 14 teachers with my AP. I was able to speak with the AP before the lessons and after the lessons, and I was also given the opportunity to sit in on post-observation conversations, and see what the AP wrote up. One of the great challenges I saw was when the AP felt he needed to provide positive feedback on lessons that did not go very well. Is it sugar coating? Im not sure. It was if he didnt want to hurt some of the teachers feelings, as some have taught almost 20 years. At the same time, Im wondering how helpful it is not give the whole truth. This is something I will need to learn more about. [Later on, in another conversation, he did say that he felt compelled to have another conversation at a later date. He still didnt know how he would break it to her.] What kind of feedback should be provided? What do you do when a lesson obviously doesnt meet the standards? My AP actually had me write a mock observation letter for practice, which was a great experience. Every year, we have a school health fair/family day event, where teachers and parents get to work together on an event. The PA also is able to get sponsors and organizations to help support our school and also bringing the community together. Part of being a leader is about establishing relationships with local community businesses and organizations, so that we can all work at doing whats best for our children. We have had the same SBO for extended time, which had been approved for the past six years from the UFT and the DOE. When we first applied for it six years ago, there was some difficulty from the DOE in getting it approved because of technicalities in the language of the SBO. It was eventually resolved. Now, six years later, the UFT decided they had a problem with it. After

Not only is it a fundraiser, but it has given some of the staff members to work together in another context. It has been one of my principals visions for many years, and it has now become a reality. We have an extremely talented Music Teacher who has given up her time to put together a staff chorus. I have been communicating with the principal about keeping our website updated, but also asking how we can better plan our website for parents and outsiders, as public relations is so important. A few of my colleagues in my cohort have also encouraged me to pursue this as a possible project for next year. I feel we can more effectively communicate with others through the use of technology in our school. In planning for the upgrade for the Computer Lab, student learning must come into consideration. I have been able to coordinate with the principal in deciding what's best in terms of ordering equipment for the lab and encouraging her to ask for grant allocation from City Council. Right now, some of these are on hold, but its always important to plan accordingly. My principal has been in the hospital this past month, and its been hard at school without her, as she managed the school so well. Her presence has been sorely missed. I was able to visit with her and just talk about the school and as always, she increased my knowledge about school operations and how to work through situations in school. She reminded me the importance of having everyone on board teachers, support staff, parents, and students. She tells me how

Artifact Logs, Reflection, Email Correspondence, Google Docs, Google Site, Google Form Analysis/Reflection of learning It was a great learning experience working with our literacy staff developer in the planning, the coordination, and the facilitation of our school staff development meeting, especially since our principal was not in attendance. Instead of just having our staff sit through hours of presentations, we had the staff visit various rooms, broken into 3 sessions. Each inquiry team was split up, so that everyone had the opportunity to present once, and attend two other sessions. The staff meeting was well received, and one of our teachers said, It was the best PD that I ever had at PS 130! I was invited by a colleague, who is in the UFT Teacher Leaders Program, to participate in a presentation and discussion on various education policies. I was a member of the Teachers Network for many years before, and this program was somewhat of a reincarnation of the network. Each presenter was given 2 minutes to present a policy issue. It was very informative, and education policy always makes for great conversation amongst educators! It was great meeting my new advisor, Marilyn Bell. She shared about her past experiences and gave me wonderful insight on the importance of scheduling and school vision. She recommended that I get to know the day-to-day school operations better, and that one important way of doing that was to really understand scheduling in both day-to-day operations and also planning for the year. In my principals absence, Ive been really fortunate to have one of my APs take me under his wing. Hes called me to fill me in on the happenings of the school,

and I had the opportunity to meet with him and ask him if I could help out with the school scheduling next year, as there will be lots of changes with grades and cluster classes. He also informed me about some parents who came to see him, asking for more recess or unstructured play. We will see how that goes next year. As CLR designee, I have the continued responsibility of making sure our data is accurate. As my principal said, Motivation to be accurate about who is in their class [the teachers] is that their public rating is based on the kids who attended their class. I had to review the data and give support to teachers who needed to make adjustments in their class lists or if they werent properly assigned. After many e-mails back and forth, we were able to resolve our issues. Observed a 5th Grade gifted classroom lesson. The teacher did a lesson on basic physics, using an online roller coaster simulation. Students were very engaged and motivated to learn through the use of this simulator, which allowed students to do online trial/error simulations of building roller coasters. Since our staff developer was not able to be in our school on this day, she asked me to help facilitate in the grade planning with the grade curriculum leaders. I was able to get a glimpse of how the teachers work together in getting their curriculum units and performance tasks together for the next coming school year. We ordered iPads for staff members a few months ago, but my principal fell ill, so weve been holding on to them until she returned. She wanted staff members to get the opportunity to use them over the summer, so they could come back in the Fall and share what theyve learned and how they plan to use them during the year in their planning and instruction. Having to work with staff in a different capacity and seeing the talented staff and students in action really boosts the school spirit and brings the community together. For the past five-six years, I have volunteered my time to help the fifth grade with making their graduation and award certificates, along with helping them with creating a DVD slideshow. Its great to assist the 5th grade teachers with the use of technology and to be able to personalize the occasion for the students. For our communications seminar, we were asked to write a 2-minute speech introducing ourselves and our school to an audience. I wrote something up and decided to get advice/feedback from my principal as well as my professor, Dr. Rima Shore. In making speeches, I am learning the importance of staying focused with a consistent message and big idea that sticks. I have been in charge of keeping track of the inventory of all the computer equipment in the school. Every year, I assess what equipment needs to be recycled, and then I organize a pickup of all the obsolete equipment. It is important that all this equipment is accounted for. Both Assistant Principals have needed legal documents to be scanned and forwarded to our network leader. As a result they have showed and shared with me some of

the everyday legal paperwork (court orders, suspension hearing letters) that must be taken care of immediately. They wanted us to provide the DoE with a real understanding of how we use social media as a meaningful teaching tool and how these new guidelines might hamper the use of the internet in the classroom. This was an extremely informative session, as these guidelines will be expected to be in place this Fall. As part of our school building response team, we are required to receive on-line training for two courses (listed in the description). As future leaders, we are expected to help in the facilitation of incident management and incident command, in case of any emergencies that occur within the school. There was so much information that was given to us in these courses. What I took from it is that there is a chain of command to follow, and all parties must be able to communicate and follow procedures in order to maintain safety and order, during any crisis.

It was great to take part in the planning and organizing of the Summer School Program. Getting to know who I will be working with and getting an overview of how the summer school program will be run. Looks like a great team, as I will not only be working with the site supervising principal, but also another principal intern who has been the schools literacy coach, and the school counselor. Unfortunately, not all of the teachers were able to make it in for set-up, but it was good to meet some of the teachers I will be working with in the program. Got to brush up on some middle school math. Also, the principal set me up with a school e-mail account and shared two Google Docs with me, which we will be using for Attendance and notes.

It was thrilling to go through the day from the beginning to the end. Ready or not, the students were coming to the summer school program, and we would have to make it work. Considering that we didnt even meet with two of the teachers, it worked out really well. As I went around to take attendance, I was able to touch base with the teachers, at least twice a day, once for each session. It was great to see our site supervisor trusting us to run the show with another principal in charge. I was able to open up the rooms and get everything ready for the day. The hardest thing is dealing with the students who are disrupting their classes and teachers not having a protocol of dealing with the disruptive students. It was good to be able to touch base with our supervising principal and to go over any questions or concerns that we have, as she will be out the rest of the week. She let us know that there will be a fire drill tomorrow and what we need to do. I made a phone call to a parent today because she and her child are going to Florida. Principal requested that she come to school to sign a release form, but she was leaving the next day. I offered to bring her the letter, but she was not in the neighborhood. Principal thanked me for making the effort. E-mailed her for documentation. The fire drill was set for 9AM, but finding out that some programs begin at 9AM, with students still coming in, I corresponded with principal to ask if we could change it to 9:30AM. After getting the okay, I had to communicate the change to all the staff and other schools that were in the building, along with the cafeteria. It was a success! Also, got to sit in on a meeting/conference, where a parent had to be called in. Learned a lot about listening and communicating concerns to parent and student. Today, we received word that many of the students who were told to come to summer school because they were told they failed the ELA or Math test, had actually passed. This is the first time answer sheets will be printed and scanned from individual schools. This makes the accuracy of the data even more crucial, as there are no blanks answer sheets. All of them are preslugged and have a scanning bar code on them. He was supposed to cover the class for the remaining two days of summer school. The class was so noisy and disruptive that the decision was made to ask him not to come back. I felt it was the right decision and safety was definitely a concern. With just a couple of days left of summer school, some of the teachers have been dealing with more disruptions, so students have been removed from their rooms. They are always very supportive. It wasnt easy telling the staff what they should or shouldnt do in terms of Social Media, but it was necessary to inform the staff to exercise good judgment when it comes to internet use. One of my former Kindergarten students (from over 10 years ago) who is now in college, has come back to our school to help out with the computer lab. His family is close with the principal, so she suggested he come and help out with our technology, so he could get some work experience, and I could help teach him about some technology troubleshooting. He had volunteered a couple of year ago, and its been great having him in the lab to help out around the school. Also, I get to help him gain some work experience and knowledge about entering the workforce. This part of being a leader is also very rewarding in terms of being a role model. So, the former Technology Innovation Manager Office of Educational Technology for our district got in touch with me and asked if I would help out as a volunteer to be a review team member for her Professional Development sessions on Social Media. My experience as a Technology Specialist and my coursework over the summer at Bank Street proved useful for this, so Im glad to be a part of this team. For the most part, we are communicating and contributing online/virtually. Its been great to be part of an online team and provide feedback for a PD Session. Its always extremely helpful to meet with my advisor and to learn more about what it takes to be an effective leader. An outside perspective helps me to look at

Attending Grade Meetings

Logs, Reflections, Notes

I was able to attend all Grade level meetings, where the staff developer went over all the data (reading, writing, and math) that classroom teachers will be responsible for handing in and how we will have consistency across the grades in terms of what data will need to be submitted to administration. I agree to try to work on a spreadsheet that will help teachers input all of their student data and groupings, along with student goals and teacher actions. I wish we had more time to learn and implement this software application that our principal subscribed to. Without a team and plan of how to implement this application, I feel a lot of money has been invested in something we still know little about in terms of how our school can use and take advantage of our subscription to this service. I had the opportunity to develop a worksheet with our staff developer for all of our teachers to use to record their student data. That way, the whole school is streamlined with one system. Administrators will see how each teacher has grouped their students. They will also be able to see all of the goals and actions the teachers are taking to help the students make progress

Curriculum and Instruction Online Researching of Teacher Resources 9/10/12-9/12/12 (2 hours) Gathering online resources for staff Logs, Reflection, email correspondence For classroom teachers and administrators, there arent enough hours in a day to sift through all of the online resources that are available to them, and there is SO many FREE resources out there that people have posted online. I decided to go online to look for some of these resources and then e-mail the links to the staff, so they could decide whether they want to use these resources. I asked the staff developer and the fourth grade if it would be okay for me to attend their meeting. I was impressed with how each teacher contributed to the meeting and came prepared with reading materials that everyone could choose from and discuss together. I volunteered to help them retype the passages from the books to a 1-page printout for students. These are to be used for the students performance tasks. I also volunteered to make a graphic organizer for the ELLs and Special Needs students to help them with the task. I was later told by the staff developer that I was very fortunate because the other grade meetings werent as well-organized and accomplished. It is always a good reinforcement to know how much planning and preparation goes into setting up a staff development day for the staff. An agenda is very important so that the staff knows what the flow of the day is and the expectations. It was great to see such a wonderful turnout at our schools first Parent Meeting. The meetings are held at 9AM, so that parents who drop off their children can stay for the meeting. My principal said that she had tried it in the evening many years ago, and the turnout was very low. This has worked better in our community. A lot of announcements had to do with fundraising, but without the fundraising efforts from our

parents, we wouldnt have such a strong arts program at our school, which has been so rewarding for the students and staff. School Consultation Committee Meeting 9/21/12, 9/24/12 (1.5 hours) Attending school consultation meeting as a committee member Logs, Notes, Reflection I have served as a member of the school consultation committee for over ten years now. I have seen the relationship between our UFT chapter leader and our administration improve over the years. It has been very interesting now seeing things from the point of view of the staff and the administration. Before, I was only looking at things from the lens of a teacher. This year, we have some new members and some were not asked to serve again this year. They found out via e-mail that they werent serving again. That was difficult. It was great to be able to sit in on the fifth grade parent info session. Many years ago, I was one of the fifth grade teachers presenting to the parents. I have seen the expectations for administration, staff, students, and parents grow over the years. First, all the parents listened to the administration present about rules and policies and then there was a brief Q&A. Then, parents went to their childrens classrooms with their teachers to get more specific information from each classroom teacher. This meeting was especially interesting because it is the first big testing grade, and the gifted parent body also changes the dynamic of the meeting. This year, we have a brand new teacher for our 3rd grade gifted class. It was almost a request from last year because of their conversations with parents of last years gifted third grade class. Its a tough position to be in, but the principal attended the class meeting to facilitate the parent meeting with the new teacher.

I had been asked to serve on the School Leadership Team, but I am in so many committees, that I wanted to give others a chance to serve. Our PA and administration have a wonderful working relationship, so our SLT meetings run quite smoothly. The principal will usually give a presentation of what our school is working on and parents and staff will ask questions for clarifications or if there are other matters to be discussed. Every year, I archive the previous years newsletters and set up a new webpage for this years newsletters. The great thing about the principal putting everything online is that she can always point to the staff where she had written something, so that everyone becomes responsible for whats posted every week. She compares this with her Principals Weekly, where she is also responsible for everything that is posted for her and all of her colleagues. We have about 10 students who bring in their own Epipens because of severe allergies. All of the clusters are trained in the use of these pens in case of emergency. There is a very small window of time when a student must be treated, so we cant always wait for medical attention to arrive. We watched a video and tried a demo pen so that we are prepared. During our consultation meeting, there was an issue brought up about photocopying, as teachers have to put in their requests for class copies. There were complaints of requests that were made weeks ago still not completed because of staff shortages. We decided

Online Application

I found out about this grant and decided to apply for it. I have won some grants in the past, and I feel its good practice to keep trying to find grants for the school that could really benefit the students. We will see if we get it by February. I feel very fortunate to be getting advice, guidance, and support from two seasoned educators. There is so much to learn from the experience of others, gaining insight and wisdom. It was also good to talk about some of the things I need to work on and focus on in terms of working on my leadership competencies. According to its website, Edmodo provides teachers and students a secure place to connect and collaborate, share content and educational applications, and access homework, grades, class discussions and notifications. Their goal is to help educators harness the power of social media to customize the classroom for each and every learner. It is very similar to Facebook, and Im hoping to implement it in our school. As a SMART Exemplary Educator, I was given the opportunity to obtain online certification as a SMART Certified Education Administrator. I wanted to learn more about implementing and integrating technology into the classroom through the interactive whiteboards (IWBs). We have one IWB in each classroom.

Writing a Letter of Recommendation 10/29/12 (1 hour)

Writing a letter of Online recommendation for a correspondence, fellow educator Letter of Reference applying for leadership program.

I was asked to write a letter of recommendation/reference from a fellow educator who is applying for a leadership program. I feel this is something that a leader needs to constantly do in order to support his/her staff or students. Written communication is important, so it was definitely a privilege to get to write this for someone. This year, it looks like all answer documents are being printed out and scanned by the schools, instead of having to send them in to be scanned. The results are almost immediate. After doing the summer internship, this is what I had a feeling would happen. More and more responsibilities are being put on the school. In this case, schools have to make sure their printers are working with enough paper and toner! Our staff developer informed me how some teachers were having difficulty working with our chart as an Excel document and asked if I could re-format it into a Word document. I was able to do it and resent it out to the staff. I watched the online information session with both assistant principals and two other colleagues who help with testing coordination. The session reviewed how to use the Acuity website and how to look and analyze the data after the results are reported. We were hoping to get more information on the administration of the assessments, but we did get some helpful information. Its always a great learning experience when I have the opportunity to observe teachers in the classrooms. I watched a teacher in her first full year and was amazed with her management and the rigor in student learning. After writing an observation up, I shared it with the teacher and she was delighted. decided to observe a veteran teacher and her fifth grade class, as she has gone in-depth with them on the events that occurred on September 11, 2001. I was impressed with the instruction from the teacher and her approach in teaching the students about terrorism and bullying. I will be interviewing her later on, along with some of her students. Notes, Reflection With the Common Core, the DOE has raised its instructional expectations for schools, and now each school is expected to have instructional leads, where teachers are expected to be part of teacher teams and collaborate with each other on analyzing data and improving instruction. We learned about learning walks in our Curriculum and Instruction course, and it was really interesting to go on a solo learning walk. I could see the benefits in doing learning walks with teachers and administration and really looking at how to improve instruction and focus on best practices. The three students that I proctored the test for had to have the directions read to them twice. For one of the students from a Special Class, I had to read each question to him. This was the first time I read each question to a student, so I got to see him work through each question. The math was way beyond his abilities, and he basically guessed at almost every answer. This is when I can see how the results of the data wont really show much for this student, as I saw that he guessed some questions correctly. When a student answers a question correctly, it may say they achieved the standard. I see how this can be very misleading, if the child simply guesses and gets some questions right. This year, there have been many surprises in terms of personnel taking health leaves and other personal issues. This has taken a great toll on the budget. She

also shared with me how frustrating it was to have all these interviews with ATRs lined up, yet so few of them actually showed up. School Assembly 10/10/12 (1 hour) Attended school assembly on Traffic Safety Notes, Reflection I was able to attend an assembly for the third and fourth grade classes. It was a musical performance by Apple Corps in collaboration with the Department of Transportation and the NYC Department of Education. I wonder how much of the message got across, as there was a lot of slap-stick humor and the acoustics made it hard to hear what the four performers were saying and singing. One of our teachers has been out for a few weeks due to health issues, so he asked me if he could have an online video conference with his students. It was amazing to see how the students responded to him, even though he wasnt physically there with the students. Yet, he was still able to manage them and connect with them! We usually have our union meeting before school starts. Less than half of the staff usually shows up to these meetings at our school. For the most part, the relationship between the principal and our chapter leader has gotten better over the years, so there is more agreeing than disagreeing in our school. I believe this has really helped us to become a successful school. I volunteer some of my time during my prep and lunch to work with the pre-kindergartners. I have a heart for early childhood education and really enjoy the opportunity to work with them and teaching them how to use technology. I cant help but picture myself in this situation, possibly soon, where I could be in a group interview. The Absent Teacher Reserve (ATR) who was interviewed had an impressive resume and seemed like she would be a good fit for our fifth grade class. I later found out she accepted a permanent position elsewhere. I appreciate my principal being open to my questions and providing me with insight into her thinking and her perspective on why she does what she does. I was able to speak to her about the DOE instructional expectations and its effect on how the staff has reacted to the fact that they are expected to meet and collaborate more in teacher teams. The principal asked me to change the message on the automated telephone system, so that if parents call the school, they would know there would be no school on Monday and Tuesday, due to the hurricane. She wanted it in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese. Because I was unable to do that, I recommended another teacher to record the message. I was able to assist her through the phone and e-mail, so that the message could be put onto the system. It took me a while to get it to work correctly, but I was able to successfully get it done.

It was originally developed for my Law Policy class at Bank Street, and now its going to be used at workshops! This year the 213 schools that participated were able to save over 1.5 million KWH. I asked my principal if we could sign up for this event, and e-mailed the staff on ideas about how we could lower our energy consumption in the school building. I was able to attend a Middle School Informational session at my school with my advisor. Not only did I learn about the Middle School application process, but my advisor pointed out the importance of presentation, presence, and poise as a leader. Sometimes you only have a small amount of time to leave an impression on others, so the way you speak and present yourself really matters as a school leader. As a future leader, I feel it is important to attend events like these and learn about education policy by listening to the major influencers in NY education. As Chancellor of the NY State Board of Regents, Merryl Tisch is one of the most powerful people when it comes to NY education policy. One thing I learned is that she is highly in favor of charter schools. My principal asked me to attend a principals meeting in

her place. Since I got to know our network leader better over the summer, it was a great honor to be asked to go to represent my principal and my school. I was able to observe our network leader and her leadership as well as getting to know other principals and seeing their thinking process. Today, much of the discussion was on departmentalization in the fifth grade and dealing with report cards and progress reports and some technology. I learned a lot from this meeting and always appreciate these opportunities. After attending these meetings, it becomes clear how a school leader needs to rely on many highly competent and trustworthy staff to have many operations within the school running smoothly. One of these operations is testing coordination. With standardized tests being so high stakes, everything has to be done according to rules and regulations, which the school leaders are ultimately responsible for. The data has to be collected with integrity. It was a great experience getting to interview one of our teachers for my Educational Research class, as I was able to ask her about her thinking process and how she plans her lessons for her students. My research is focused on 9/11, so I learned a lot about her thinking process when in comes to significant events in social studies/history. The most time consuming part was transcribing the half-hour interview. In transcribing the interview, I also learned about how I need to be more articulate when asking questions and acquiring information. After interviewing the teacher, I was able to interview the students to see their side of the story. Seldom to you get the chance to interview a small group of students and to ask them what they learned from the teacher and how they have internalized and processed

Mass Prep Coverage 11/19/12, 11/20/12 (1.5 hours) Covering classes for the arts cluster teacher Notes, Reflection I decided to help with prep coverage because one of the cluster teachers was out for a couple of days. Instead of trying to cover ten classes at one time in the auditorium with other staff, I decided to just have one of my classes join in with the other classes. This made it easier to manage and gave me the opportunity to speak to the students about recycling and sustainability by demonstrating to them and showing them videos about recycling, especially paper. Its such a different experience when youre actually taking notes as you observe students in a lunchroom. I observed one class, and they behave so differently in the lunchroom versus the classroom. I noticed that one student was very distant with his back to everyone else and just looked very withdrawn. I later asked the teacher about him and found out that his father had just passed away two weeks earlier. That explained so much, and was so sad to hear. I was able to observe a fifth grade teacher and our school guidance counselor speak to a class about the Middle School application process. It brought back memories of when I taught fifth grade, and now the students have even more choices when it comes to where they want to apply. The principal decided to put off some of her original plans for the staff development meeting because of the storm. She decided to go over logistics and protocols in term of what to do in case of future emergencies. might be a good idea to have a school Facebook page to allow for better communication. I also thought it would be good for the school to have an online presence. We will start slowly. Some staff were resistant to using Facebook for our school, so it will be an interesting project. (11/9, 11/15) The principal discussed with me how the budgeting works in terms of sub coverage and what happens when staff members go on leave for various reasons and how this affects the school. I really appreciate learning about the behind-the-scenes operations and her thinking process. (11/29/12) After attending the Principals Meeting, I was able to speak to my principal and share with her what I learned at the meeting. She shared with my about how our school operates and some of the history of trying out departmentalization in the fifth grade. She also spoke to me about some of the issues with personnel and parents and how she has handled certain situations. I was asked to help a fourth grade teacher with translations during her parent-teacher conference. Its interesting being able to sit in on meetings between a teacher and her parents and how a teacher communicates her students strengths and needs with the parents of her students. I saw the importance of showing parents student work and data and also the need to give parents tools and strategies for them to help them with their students. It is always interesting to hear from the Union and the issues that teachers bring up during these meetings. We had just found out that some of the days from our February break would be taken away due to Hurricane Sandy. Sometimes, small issues become the big issues. The focus should be on what is best for the students.

Our school was sent to another location for the meeting, since our school still did not have water and electricity. Usually, if equipment breaks down, we would have to contact technicians and arrange for them to come assess the equipment and then we would get charged for the repair. Because I have experience with these projectors, I am able to change it out and return them free of charge, because they are still under warranty. This experience has come in handy. This year, more classrooms need to sign up for laptop carts because of having fewer laptops in the school. This year we decided not to renew a 1:1 Laptop Initiative for the fourth and fifth grades, so the organization came and took away all the laptop carts, with the exception of two carts for two classes. Competency Personal Leadership Event/Date/No. of hours Description of event Coordinating NYCDOE Participating in the Green Cup Challenge NYCDOE Green Cup 12/3/12, 12/14/12 Challenge (2 hours) Artifact Notes, Reflection, Online correspondence Analysis/Reflection of learning Out of the 200+ schools that signed up for the challenge, we wound up at around the middle. Its a bit difficult for our school, as we have so much technology in our school building running every day. Cant wait to see what the top schools did to conserve their electricity. I reported back to the staff with an e-mail. Ive been attending our district technology liaison meetings for years, and it was nice to be able to help with the facilitation of the meeting and the planning part of it, too. It was also great to have my advisor come for part of the meeting. I was able to e-mail the Director of Digital Literacy and Citizenship at New York City Department of Education with feedback about the meeting, and she took my feedback into consideration. Having my principal as a mentor has been wonderful, and I appreciate all of her guidance and support, in helping me think through issues. I am able to ask her any kinds of questions, and she makes herself available in giving me things and issues to think about. We were told that some schools have been getting unannounced visits to check to see if teachers know which students have IEPs, and if so, where they are or how the get access to them. Since they are secure documents, these papers have to be secured (not put in unlocked drawers or closets). We are trying to come up with a better system of keeping track of all our students who have IEPs. This webinar was a bit frustrating because the presenter spoke very quickly, and it was hard to understand what she was saying. We did the best that we could as she showed us how to access our school

Curriculum and Instruction Grading Math Baseline Assessments 12/12/12, 12/13/12, 12/14/12 (4 hours) Grading 3rd, 4th and 5th Notes, Reflection grade math assessments In grading the assessments, I get to see how they are raising the standards for mathematics across the board. Students have to complete many more multi-step problems and be able to explain their process. Students are expected to do more at a younger age, and I question whether its beneficial to all students when this is done. Grading these assessments has also been an issue, as there is no formal training. Schools are supposed to figure it out on their own, and from grading these assessments, we find some teachers not really following the rubric when grading them. I wish that every staff member had the opportunity to serve as a UFT consultation committee member, as you learn more about what goes on behind the scenes. We are also able to see things from another perspective and learn about why some things are the way they are, especially with resources and operations. The school server has a limited amount of space and some teachers had too many files saved on the school server. If it is too full, it could impact the entire school system. Because of this, I had to go through each persons folder to see how much space they were taking up and then had to e-mail those who were using too much storage space. I was able to share my notes and observations with the teacher I have been observing for my Research class. She was impressed with all the data I was able to gather, and she was grateful for it. Win-win! Continuing to help principal with editing the staff newsletter and providing input where necessary.

We went over some updates during this meeting about our Building Response Team. It amazes me how we never had these things in place before, and now we learn how important it is to be prepared and safe. Before ordering interactive whiteboards for the school, the technicians need to come to look at the layout of the room to make sure they can be installed. I also worked with the technician in figuring out what other options we have in terms of technology in the building. I was able to submit our $73,000+LMDC grant application on time. I sent out a form to staff to assess what their needs were, too. I was glad to have submitted it earlier, as I was asked to revise and edit the application a number of times in order to make sure the language was correct. I learned that the grant money must specifically be used for enhancements, so when you write that things are for replacements, it has to be reworded to show how it will enhance the school. This was a great learning experience in terms of getting a budget, figuring out how to best use these funds for the school, getting feedback from the principal and integrator, and the whole process.

Ive learned the importance of marinating good relationships and partnerships. Having my principal as a mentor continues to be wonderful, and I appreciate all of her guidance and support, in helping me think through issues. I am able to ask her any kinds of questions, and she makes herself available in giving me things and issues to think about. By this point, I find much value in learning to work and network with vendors and other personnel who provide a service for the school. Ive learned the more prepared you are for these meetings, the more efficiently run they are and the faster you can get things processed. Before the integrator came, I made sure we had a clear idea of what the school needed and then took his advice and expertise into consideration. E-mail correspondence with him and the principal made the process flow much smoother. Hopefully, this will help in getting the enhancements and upgrades in a timely manner. In our last meeting in December, we were trying to come up with a better system of keeping track of all our students who have IEPs. I suggested we share a Google document so that all cluster teachers have access to which students from which classes have IEPs. This helps us because we see so many students in a week. Acuity, the student data must all be entered in correctly. Not only that, but teachers need to verify class lists, when they input their data, to make sure their class rosters are correct. Otherwise, the cumulative data for the grade and school cannot be completed. Students who transfer out of the school or within the school are sometimes not updated in these systems, so Acuity must be contacted to correct these errors. I attended a webinar on Digital Storytelling to learn more about how this can be utilized in the classroom. Students love to listen to stories and create stories and technology allows for another tool to engage them and give them the opportunity to present stories. I signed up for another webinar in the evening on digital citizenship. Its incredible how many resources that are FREE and available to teachers to use to help our students with digital citizenship. One of the most difficult and challenging things is that there simply arent enough hours in a day to go through all the materials that are out there. When I have some extra time, I feel its extremely important to keep learning about what is out there to help better my instruction and to provide support for teachers. In order to show teachers this website creator, I brush up on how to use the application by watching recorded video webinars. This also gives me ideas on how teachers can create websites and blogs for their classrooms and use it with their students. Our staff developer was missing for a while because she was stuck in Australia due to paperwork/Visa papers, as her company was switched over to another one. I see her as our instructional leader and her presence was definitely missed at our school. She shared with me about other schools undergoing Quality Reviews and how the bar has been raised so much

Staff and Community Tech Lunch and Learn 1/6/13 (1 hour) Developing Survey Notes, Reflection Form and Invitation for Tech Lunch and Learn For my intern project, I decided to start a Tech Lunch and Learn 3 times a week, so that it is offered to all teachers who would like to attend. I decided to create an online survey to see how many would be interested and what tech needs they have. With Superstorm Sandy and the Newtown tragedy, I thought it would be a good idea to have an emergency notification for staff members, just in case. I found out about this application and asked the principal if she thought it was a good idea to implement this for our school. She gave me the green light, put it in the newsletter, and now we have many staff members who signed up for it. If there is any emergency, the administration could send one message, and everyone would receive it via e-mail or text or both. This has been a great experience thus far. Although some sessions have only had one teacher attend, this allowed me to ask more questions and have conversations about what teachers need in terms of support. They also have a lot to share about how they are using technology in the classrooms or their frustrations with technology. My principal also suggested I write recaps in the school newsletter for those who might not be able to attend. I felt this was a great idea to share what teachers are doing and how they are using technology in their lessons. I will continue to hold these sessions. Competency Personal Leadership Event/Date/No. of hours UFT Consultation Committee Meeting 2/1/13, 2/5/13 (1.5 hours) Description of event Meeting with colleagues to discuss school issues and then meeting with Principal Artifact Notes, Reflection Analysis/Reflection of learning Its important for this committee to get the pulse of the school from the staff, as they report to the CC when they have any school issues they would like for us to discuss with the principal. Oftentimes, most issues are about paperwork and what is required. When meeting with the principal, she usually makes things transparent for us and explains why things are the way they are. It continues to amaze me how we can now collaborate virtually and help to plan a workshop without having to physically meet together. Although its not quite the same not having face-to-face contact, it great to be able to provide feedback and participate in the planning process. It continues to be a challenge of bringing in social media, professional networking, and blogging into the classrooms, as many staff are reluctant to take the risk to bring such technology into the classrooms. Many use it for personal use and keep it separate from what they do with students. Its such a powerful tool, but there needs to be more professional development and conversations around it. I am so grateful to be able to meet with my principal and Rima Shore, the Chair of the Educational Leadership Department at Bank Street. We talked about my experience at Bank Street as well as my school, so we could come to some consensus about how I can best share what I have learned at the May 10th conference. It was also great to have the Chair of the department come to visit my school and to have a conversation about my Bank Street experience thus far. Our school is scheduled to receive 52 computers, 18

I had to make sure all the machines were assigned to designated classrooms and also make sure all teachers got their rooms ready for the delivery and installation. I think this is great practice for me in terms of coordinating with teachers and trying to ensure a smooth transition for everyone. We will see how it goes. The aides hours were temporarily cut due to failure to pass teacher evaluation system. The principal asked some of the staff to help out with the morning lineup because aides hours would start a half-hour later than usual. Fortunately, this cut has been placed on hold, but did go into effect for a day or so. Our staff developer had a connection with someone who offered to give us a glimpse of a program he developed to analyze data based on our standardized tests. I had to do a little research to find out how to access our data from ARIS and was able to forward her the files. Its amazing how much you can do with these data files. As for how helpful all of this data analysis is, thats another story. I think there is so much you can really show from these multiple choice tests, yet they are so high-stakes that it would be silly not to look closely at them. FEMA came to teach students about how to prepare for disasters at home. They told students to prepare family emergency plans and to make a disaster supply kit. I think it would have been helpful for them to give students something to bring home, so they could share with parents what they learned about at the assembly. Otherwise, I wonder how many of the students went home to talk about it and how many teachers followed up with the students after this presentation. One of the Assistant Principals asked me about having teachers videotape their lessons and submitting it to

him to use as classroom observations. He said teachers did this back in the day with videotapes, and now that digital cameras and iPads are so readily available, he thought he might offer it as an option for teachers. I felt a bit hesitant, as I believe observations are best done in person, but if an AP is very familiar with a teacher, then I guess it could be a nice option to offer to teachers. It would probably be most beneficial if both admin and teacher then discussed what was recorded together. Notes, Reflection Two of my colleagues just started their leadership program at Baruch. Six years ago, I attended one semester at Baruch for the Aspiring Leadership Program, and now the program has changed. They have one adjunct teaching most of their coursework. I am excited to collaborate with my colleagues and have conversations around school leadership. The Special Education reforms are upon us, and this is mostly due to the fact that NYC and NYS have not done very well in terms of compliance to Federal Law, so we are in danger of losing funding if we dont get our systems in place and functioning under laws. Our principal sent a team of us to get more training and professional development, so that we can be better equipped and prepared for inclusion in our school. This session was on Inclusive Lesson Planning and was very informative. Speaking with staff developer about the Common Core and what our staff and students need in terms of curriculum and instruction. We are focusing on mathematics in terms of inquiry and how we can better prepare align our instruction to the Common Core expectations, which have raised the bar considerably in terms of multi-step problems and being able to explain ones thought process using appropriate math language. Every year, it is wonderful being able to take part in the Chinese New Year celebration in our community. For the past several years, I have volunteered to help the school out in supervising the students and taking part in the Chinese New Year Parade in Chinatown. Our school has been invited every year to take part in this celebration on a cold Sunday afternoon the weekend after Chinese New Year. Analysis/Reflection of learning I was nominated by my department chair, Rima Shore, to participate in a forum with the Minister of Education for the Netherlands. The Minister was interested in learning about students experiences in our different graduate programs at Bank Street, what we see as the needs in the field, and our perspectives on teacher education and teaching policy. It was great to hear from the Minister as well as Dean Virginia Roach about education, as well as other students in different programs at Bank Street. It was amazing to hear from foreign dignitaries who are interested in our views on education, and it also showed how Bank Street has an international influence on education. It was truly an honor! It is always wonderful to gain insight from my advisor, as I always learn things and see things from other perspectives. At this meeting, I learned about the importance of organization as a school leader, ensuring equity and support amongst students and staff, how to help and supporting teachers during observations and looking at student engagement. This was the third Weismann Dinner I attended at Bank Street, and each one of them was extremely beneficial because I was able to listen to administrators who graduated from Bank Street putting theory and experience into practice. They made the principalship real with their stories, advice, and wisdom. It was great to be able to help out with this professional development event for Parent Coordinators during Spring Break. the students, parents, and staff at their schools. It was also great to see a workshop in real time that I was able to help plan virtually with others. Listening to Diane Ravitch speak along with Bank Street Faculty Panel about What NYCs Next Mayor Needs to Know about Education Notes, Reflection I feel its so important to keep up with current events in education policy. I have heard Diane Ravitch speak on education before, so I was excited to attend this event. She spoke openly and honestly about the education landscape and how the privatization of public schools is on the forefront right now. It was also great to hear from Bank Street faculty and listen to their views on the changing landscape of education today in America. It really showed me the importance of advocating for our students and public education. I went to a Saturday information session at Bank Street on the changes in the NYS Teacher Certification Requirements in order to be more aligned with the Common Core State Standards. I felt it would be good to find out about what new teachers and school leaders have to now go through in order to become certified. Self-reflection, planning, and feedback are all very important in this process. Its not just about passing a computer-based reading/writing exam. There is going to be a rubric with over a dozen competencies that a teacher must reflect on in his/her instruction and lessons. More and more states are signing up for this more comprehensive certification process, so teachers may be able to teach from state to state, similar to National Certification. I find it fascinating how much pre-planning and preparation is involved in planning for the high-stakes examinations. The security of these exams is of utmost importance and the integrity of administering these exams. It is important to have a team doing the preparations, as you want to have more than one person involved in the preparation and administration of these examinations.

Once again, our principal sent a team of us (teachers and speech teachers) to get more training and professional development on special education, so that we can be better equipped and prepared for inclusion in our school. This session was on Adaptive Materials and Flexible Scheduling/Programming. It was interesting having Professional Development at a museum run by outsiders. It was nice to be able to think about helping teachers to think more deeply in terms of planning trips and to use all the readily available free resources that have been created for teachers and their students. Speaking with staff developer about the Common Core and what our staff and students need in terms of curriculum and instruction. Spoke to her about helping to facilitate a future meeting on Mathematics and the Common Core with grade leaders, I received an e-mail for an opportunity to take an online graduate course conducted by PBS Teacherline in Mathematics. I wanted to learn more about math, and I knew it would be a lot of work, but I decided to give it a try. Ive been learning more about the NCTM principles and standards, and its been very interesting hearing from other teachers who are teaching all over NYC and their experiences in teaching mathematics. This continues to be a great experience thus far. This month, I was able to attend some Lunch and Learns that were facilitated by our Literacy Staff Developer. These sessions are a bit different because she has an agenda that she needs to address to the staff in terms of the Common Core State Standards and what needs to be happening in the classroom. It was a monumental task of making sure every new computer (53 in all) and printer (18 in all) was set up and ready for teacher and staff use. I had to personally network every computer and install the software, along with helping some configure their rooms to their satisfaction. In February, I found out that I won a $250 grant for the school that I had applied for in October 2012. It amazes me how many opportunities there are in terms of education grants, as long as you have an idea in mind that can help benefit student learning.
