A Professional Growth Plan Incorporating the STP Process

Annual Professional Growth Plan for: Margaret Geary School Year: PSII Teaching Quality Standard Reference: KSA 7 and 9 Goal: To use my voice less when managing my classroom. What new things could I do? Wait in front the classroom Give me five without my voice Turn lights on and off Use smart board for a bell or gong Timers when doing projects so I dont have to end things with my voice. If you can hear me clap once, clap twice. Plan: Find new ways to manage a classroom such as turning the lights on and off, waiting patiently at the classroom, give me five without my voice, etc. Find new resources for classroom management. Ask my professors, teacher associates, and colleagues about their experience with classroom management and how they use their voice less. Expected Outcomes/ How goal is measured: Better control of my classroom (s) Less sore throats Students wont get tired of hearing my voice so often. Timeline: first week of PSII to establish nonvocal cues. Reflection: I had to learn this one fast when I lost my voice for the latter part of a week. I found that this goal tied into waiting and patience because without using my voice, students had to actually look at me instead of me raising my voice for attention. I established some attention getters that used less of my voice (such as going up to a student and saying if you can hear me clap twice, rest of class clap 3 times). I will eternally be working on this goal because it ties into patience and waiting, and also into a wellness goal of keeping my voice healthy so that I can better manage my classroom. But, despite having troubles with this goal, my classroom management skills did not seem to suffer. I had their attention almost all of the time. Resources: Talked to my TA about this, used my personal learning network (PLN) for some answers, and googled some ideas. Timeline: was not met, still ongoing.

Teaching Quality Standard Reference: KSA 8 Goal: `Use proper language with students for their age level and incorporate that in my lesson plans. What new things could I do? Break down my words for any age level Learn a new word every day for when Im teaching junior high or high school Have a word of the day as routine Plan: Not use the words you guys Think my words through and speak slower. Use higher level vocabulary with higher grades and break down my words with lower grades. Use key words and definitions in my lesson plans to remember to use age appropriate language.

Resources: Professors, teacher associates, and colleagues. Dictionaries Timeline: First week of PSII to maintain the habit of using appropriate language. Hopefully, it will last for the rest of my teaching career.

Expected Outcomes/ how goal is measured: Better understanding from students Encourage higher thinking and speaking

Reflection: This one went right out the window. As I got more comfortable with the school atmosphere and the students, I used a lot of the you guys. Id like to stay away from it but its convenient and in high school and junior high, students dont notice as much because you only get to see them one period per day as opposed to elementary which you see them all day, every day. In breaking down my words, I lost sight of that too because they are an older group. That being said, not all will get some of the higher level concepts Im giving, so it will be a lesson to learn: ALWAYS break down guidelines, expectations and answers for ALL levels, but back it up with higher level thinking as extension for others. Resources: Talked to my TA about this, used my personal learning network (PLN) for some answers, and googled some ideas. Word of the day in music (need to remind myself everyday to remember) Timeline: Somewhat met timeline goal, still ongoing.

Teaching Quality Standard Reference: KSA 9 and 10 Goal: ` To include more technology in my teaching and lesson plans. What new things could I do? If the school has ipads or laptops, use those for lessons more often. More interactivity with the students on the smart board Theory homework on musictheory.net or other internet resource. Start an interactive blog so the students can interact with me and homework. Have a multimedia project in a subject to fit in with the curriculum. Resources: Laptops, ipads, computer room, smart board, smart phones. Other teachers and colleagues. Computer room manager at schools Information Technology program of studies. Timeline: Once a week depending on the amount of technology available. Reflection: This one I did. In Science, almost every lesson I used the smart board for a power point, video or interactive game for the students. The school I am at does not have ipads for the students, but the technology used in science engaged them. Music, on the other hand, is tough. When my TA asked me about bringing more technology into the band room, all I could think of were tuners and he said thats a good start. I showed the students a video of Mnozil brass on the projector and that was a good start. There are still more opportunities to use more technology in the band room. Resources: Talked to my TA about this, used my personal learning network (PLN) for some answers, and googled some ideas, used videos and the internet frequently. Timeline: Somewhat met, still ongoing. Plan: Find what technology is available at the school Im at. Bring in my own technology. Technology surveys to see how comfy they are with it. Technology tutorials. Establish routine and show a youtube clip or newspaper article of daily events to incorporate more technology. For upper grades, use smart phones for polls. Expected Outcomes/ how goal is measured: Students feel more comfortable with technology Technology is a part of routine and is used to meet many requirements of the curriculum.

Wellness Goal Goal: ` Workout 4 times a week for at least 30 minutes. What new things could I do? Go for a brisk walk TV and movie work outs (when someone does this, you do x amount of squats, etc.) Do more zumba or go to zumba classes Get a workout buddy Instructional videos Plan: Every night before supper or after supper, I will exercise. Or, I could also go for a walk after school for 30 minutes. I will also try to take the stairs instead of the elevator whenever possible.

Resources: Motivational materials to keep me going Internet resources for workouts VHS, DVDS Friends, coworkers, etc.

Expected Outcomes: To be more fit and physically healthier and to have a release after school.

Time line: on going through PSII and hopefully for the rest of my university and teaching career! Reflection: Easier said than done. I can honestly say that my wellness goal was not met the first half of PSII. I went out for a walk once or twice a week, but past that all I really did was walk around the school. For the first week of PSII although, I joined in the grade 7s gym class playing badminton to meet this goal and that was awesome. I knew all of these students through band, drama and science so we hit it off. But, PSII got busy, and I wanted the prep time instead of gym. I will try and get back into the habit of going to gym with the 7s or finding my own way of working out. Resources: Exercising at home, internet, grade 7 gym class. Timeline: Somewhat met, Still ongoing.

Overall Reflections: Based on my professional practice and my observations of student learning . . . What should I do more of? -Non-verbal cues -Wait time - Use more technology - Group projects - Assessment - More worksheets with longer videos Because - Id like to use my voice less - I need to be more patient and the students need to feel that awkward silence - Id like to get more comfortable with technology - I need to experience more of the group work dynamic and classroom management pertaining to that - I need to learn more assessment methods, especially in music. - This would keep the students engagement and is formative assessment of the knowledge they are getting. (worksheets with longer video) What new things could I do? - Bring more technology into the classroom such as go to the computer lab/book computer lab. (Or ipads or laptops depending on what the school has). - Do more group projects or stations for students to do group work in. - Experiment with different types of assessment (formatting rubrics, student assessment, defense papers, etc.) Because: -Technology is a skill that a lot of students need to learn in this day and age and should be incorporated in the classroom. - I need to experience more classroom

What should I do less of? - Use my voice less - Talking through the students - Long videos Because - I want to save my voice and I dont want the students to get tired of hearing my voice. - Its frustrating for all of us. - They lose attention quickly; they need something to focus them whether that be stopping at key points, guided worksheet or both.

What should I stop doing? - Using a loud teacher voice. - Using repeated words like um and kay. Because - I need to learn how to save my voice and use other classroom management techniques other than my voice or else Ill burn out. - It is distracting.

management in a group setting. It is always a good thing to experiment with the ways that students are assessed and gives me a chance to talk with other teachers and find new resources for assessment.
