Day 1 Lesson Plan: Listen, My Champs

Class/Subject: North Rockford Middle School, 8th Grade, ELA Title Code Talker Collaborative Research Review Overview Journal (10 min) Code Talker Champs Chart Paper Champs Activity (20 min) Note Taking PowerPoint and Foldable (5 min) Listen, My Children Reading and Listening to the Prologue of Code Talker (5 min) Stoplight Exit Ticket Description After journaling, each group will be giving a piece of chart paper with four spaces to draw in, along with a package of markers. Each space will be based on the previous days research, the teacher will announce the topic for each space and groups will be given 2 minutes to draw something that represents what they learned about that topic. They will follow this pattern for all four spaces. There will be 6 groups in all, and four topics. Once time has been given for drawing, groups will tape their poster to the wall, and a group representative (or two) will explain their drawings to the class. This will serve as our review for the research project we did on the previous day. I will then show a brief PowerPoint presentation on note taking for narrator info, and students will create a journal page for this purpose. As a class, we will listen to the prologue of the audiobook of Code Talker and read along. Students will be asked to keep the idea of narrator identiy, and Navajo identity in mind, so they can take notes on it after the reading. We will share a few of our ideas as a class. As an exit ticket, students will be given post it notes, on which they will write either something they learned (and place it on the green stoplight), something they were confused about (and place it on the yellow stoplight), or something that hindered their learning (and place it on the red stoplight) on their way out of the room. Goals/Objectives Students will solidify learning from previous days research on Code Talkers, U.S. Marines, Iwo Jima, and the reason for lack of recognition the Navajo Code talkers received from the U.S. Government. Students will consider how culture affects narrator information in the text. Students will assess their own learning through the stoplight exit ticket exercise. Markers Tape Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac, one for each student and teacher Audiobook of Code Talker Post-It Notes Assessment The Chart Paper Champs activity is not only an active and creative review for my students but a chance for me to perform a summative assessment, and correct understanding from the previous days independent research. The exit ticket will allow me to see if there are other areas of misunderstanding, if there are class management issues, or if students are learning what I hope they will learn. Accommodation The Chart Paper Champs activity allows for students who are stronger to help students who had a more difficult time during their research. The audiobook will help all students with comprehension, especially with the tricky Navajo words in the text.
