Proposal Information

Proposal General Information: Program Title Please limit your response to 30 characters maximum. Reading Eggs Literacy Program Program Start Date 09/03/2013 Program End Date 08/29/2014

Proposal Detail: Which best describes the primary focus of the program? Family Reading Program (EDUCATION) Please provide an overview of the program. Reading Eggs is a comprehensive, online supplemental literacy program for early learners ages 4 through 8. Grounded in extensive educational research, Reading Eggs builds on and reinforces the five key reading pillars: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Students can use the proram at home as well as at school. Once a lesson is complete, students can revisit it and repeat it as many times as they like or need to. Students receive a certificate after successfully completing the quiz at the end of every ten lessons. Reading Eggs provides teachers and parents with a simple "dashboard" to show each student's reading progress. Teachers have access to downloadable lesson plans and student worksheets for every lesson. Teachers can choose the start poing for individual students, so that each child can progress at their own level. Reading Eggs was designed by early childhood literacy experts who use 21 century technology to motivate students to become proficient readers. electronic books are a component of this program for students to confirm or self-correct word recognition. Printed versions of the e-books are also available. Interactive animations, learning activities, fun games, great songs and lots of rewards kept Boyd's students engaged during the first year of program implementation of the literacy program.

Provide a description of how the program will demonstrate success in increasing the reading proficiency of Pre-K and/or Elementary Students. The Reading eggs program has features that support literacy instruction. Diagnostic tests and student management tools provide teachers with information used to place studetns at different reading levels within the program. The focus of the program for Pre-K / Kindergarten students is letter sounds, sight words and simple sentences. First grade studetns are given a placement test to determine their current reading level and ensure that they are working at their ability level. A skill bank focuses on spelling, grammar and vocabulary development for second graders. A story factory and weekly contests gets students into writing. Struggling and reluctant readers are learning whild working on the computer at their own pace. There are plenty of practice opportutinties for studetns to develop key reading skills along with game activities that can be repeated as needed. E-Books are available allowing students to immediately practice the vocabulary words they have learned. (Printable versions of these books are also available.) Books for participants to keep at home (purcahsed from the grant) will provide resources for continued reading practice, opportunities to share progress with family and friends, and establish a personal library for each student.
