McDonald TWS 2-ECED 429 Lesson One Learning Objectives Learning Objectives: 1. Students will work positively and cooperatively to demonstrate the ability to use estimation when determining the approximate number of objects is a collection of 20-100 objects. (EEDA 4.2) (SCSS-Mathematics: 1-2.2) 2. The students will organize data and construct a bar graph to illustrate collected data. (SCSS-Mathematics: 1-6.2) Alignment with Standards: The learning objectives for lesson one are from the South Carolina State Standards (SCSS)-mathematics and the Education and Economic Development Act (EEDA) standards. These objectives are indicators based on what students should be able to do at the conclusion of the lesson. The objectives supporting SCSS 1-2.2 and 1-6.2 are connected in this lesson because students complete a bar graph at the conclusion of the lesson. My goal is for students to demonstrate an understanding of how to estimate and when it is necessary. I would like for students to be able to accurately express collected data on a bar graph as well. Appropriateness: Students will benefit from these learning objectives because they are developmentally appropriate for all students in the class. All members of the class are encouraged to work with a pre-assigned partner. The method of partners is used to save time and to benefit students who may struggle with estimation and/or mathematics. Students have some prior knowledge to making estimations and predictions. In kindergarten, students recalled numbers, counting forward through 99 and backward from 10 (K-2.1). They translated between

Victoria McDonald TWS 2-ECED 429 numeral and quantity through 31 (K-2.2) and compared sets of no more than 31 objects using the terms more than, less than and the same as (K-2.3). In first grade, students use estimation to determine the approximate number of objects in a set of 20 to 100 objects (1-2.2). Students also translate between numeral and quantity through 100 (1- 2.1) and compare whole-number quantities through 100 by using the terms is greater than, is less than and is equal to (1-2.5). In second grade, students will generate estimation strategies to determine the approximate number of objects in a set of no more than 1000 objects (2-2.1) (South Carolina State Standards Support Document First Grade Number and Operation, 2007) The needs and special accommodations needed for each student should be taken into consideration when formatting assessments for these objectives. Students should be grouped with students they are able to get along with (Safe School Climate). Learning objectives for this lesson are appropriate based upon the state standards for this grade level.
