There has been talk recently about
the social media site Twitters
launching of a new music app. The
speculation surrounding the launch
comes after Twitter confrmed it

then again last week when Wiz
Khalifa, who has nearly 10 million
follows, tweeted: Man this new
Twitter music app is insane! Then
Ryan Seacrest wrote: Playing with

to rank music based on personalised

The announcement was made last week
that the Big Day Out will return to New
Zealand in 2014. We strongly felt that
there was real desire for the event to return
to Auckland, says Auckland BDO promoter
Campbell Smith.
And more than anything else that really
whet the appetite. We became determined
that if we could, we should bring it back. We
have spent the summer working with the
Australian Big Day Out team and American
partners, C3, the promoters of other major
festivals including Lollapolooza, on a plan to
bring the BDO back to life in New Zealand.
In January 2014 Auckland will host a multi-
stage music, art and culture event created
and curated specifcally for its New Zealand
audience. It will have its connections to the
event happening over the Tasman, but it
wont be the same and it will have its links to
the past, yet it will be different.
A line-up topped by some of the biggest
international and local names in rock, pop,
alternative, hip hop and dance music.
The company is not yet able to confrm a
new home for the festival but have been very
vocal about their fngers being crossed for
Western Springs Stadium and Park.
Mayor Len Brown says he would be
thrilled to welcome a Big Day Out NZ back
to Auckland. Any world class city has a
constellation of events to cater for the
tastes of all of its residents - young and
not so young. Returning a Big Day Out to
our calendar in 2014 would fll a huge hole
and the proposed relocation to Western
Springs would bring this signifcant music

The prog-punk fusion band is back in New Zealand
after a fve-year absence. Lead by singer/guitarist
Claudio Sanchez, whose soaring voice is a big part of
their appeal, Coheed and Cambria have established
an unparalleled reputation for bringing together
diverse genres to create one stunning narrative on
each of their albums.
Any sound purist knows while iPods may be the thing of the future, vinyl is part
of the past we want to keep alive. And to keep the dream going, Record Store
Day was conceived in 2007. Its a worldwide celebration, a way to spread the
word about the unique culture surrounding over 700 independently owned
record stores in the US and thousands of similar stores internationally. New
Zealand is doing their part too, with stores in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch,
Palmerston North and even Waihi participating. See our Recordland section to
fnd out what to do this Record Store Day in New Zealand.
As one of the founding members of British alt-
rock band Yes, Jon Anderson was one of the most
infuential voices and songwriters of a generation.
His solo show includes classic tales from his days with
the group, with timeless songs from all across the Yes
songbook as well as his own eclectic solo work.
The creation of garage-rocker Kyle Thomas, this
bands charisma has been described as magnetic.
The shows have been called cheap-beer-soaked tent
revivals. Their solo debut album, Was Dead, was
the sort of album many musicians would burn down
their garages to make and their latest has captivated
critics around the world. Dont miss them tearing up
the stage.
Have you been a bad boy/girl? This is the place for
you. While theres a certain amount of country music
infuence in their work, they cant defne themselves
in straight-shooting line-dancing style. Dianne Swann
and Brett Adams work their magic with unique song
writing and sounds. Supported by Nightchoir.
Papamoa bad boy Tiki Taane has teamed up with
Jayson Norris for a nationwide acoustic tour. Playing
shows in Tauranga, Hamilton, Kaitaia, Auckland,
Wellington and Christchurch, the boys are joined
by special guest Jess Harlen; a New Zealand-born,
Boston-based soul singer who Rolling Stone magazine
recently dubbed as an artist to watch.
Join The Corporate Voice Experience, quite possibly
the worlds most unusual and dodgiest band. Theyre
a motley collection of musical amigos keen on good
times, with a seemingly insatiable appetite for Jager.
Theyve even had big-name guest players on board
such as Jeremy Clarkson, Jordan Luck and Daniel
Bedingfeld since 2004.
Celebrating their ffth anniversary this year, the
Auckland band is fnally making a return to the live
circuit. This is the frst time in a year that theyll
be taking their mixture of pleasant melody and
smashing dissonance, complex structures and punky
mess on the road.
Ever just wanted to pitch up a hammock between
a couple of palm trees, kick up your feet and forget
about all those back-to-work chores you have to do

good old fashion fun to be had.

A decade after the New York
three-piece were blasted into the
collective consciousness by the post-
punk new-wave revival explosion of
the early noughties, Karen O. and
crew return with their fourth full-
length Mosquito. A kinetic blend of
the raucous intensity of their early
days and the textured experimental
musings of their more recent work.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs have spent ten
years grinding up elements of indie
rock, garage, new wave and punk
into a crunchy amorphous swirl of
subversive howls and expansive
grooves. The on and off-stage antics
of larger-than-life lead singer Karen
O. and multi-instrumentalist Nick
Zinner have garnered the band much
mainstream curiosity as well as a
loyal legion of fans across the globe.
Mosquito, the bands fourth full
length, comes after 2009s Its Blitz!
spliced the Yeahs traditionally
raucous punk-fuelled rock n roll
with a more synth-heavy, layered
and polished sound, an evolution
which afforded positive reviews and
increased radio airplay, although less
than expected commercial success.
As if in reaction to that record,
Mosquito takes us back to the bands
roots. Fuzzy guitars, reverb-drenched
rhythms and Karen Os trademark
sassy charm all gel here to create
a record that sounds as fresh and
powerful as did their debut Fever To
Tell back in 2003.
The album opens with the turbo-
charged frst single Sacrilege, a
soulful gospel-fuelled anthem whose
epic scale is up there with anything
the band has produced previously.
Sampled echoes of subway carriages
glide through the haunting Subway,
gently punctuating it with a smooth
pulsing rhythm as Karen O. channels
Debbie Harry and Kate Bush to draw
us into her captivating underworld.
Title track Mosquito is classic Yeahs
a nice balance between trashy rock
n roll and honeyed melancholy.
Karen Os subtle mimicry of a buzzing
mosquito subtly pervades the track,
ratcheting up the tension as it builds
into its vitriolic refrain, with O.
repeating the warning Theyll suck
your blood, with such infectious
venom thats its hard not to feel the
bloodthirsty parasites crawling on
your skin. Built around a sublimely
simple and masterfully catchy guitar
riff, the reverb-drenched Slave is
another perfect Yeahs gem, and other
standout tracks include punk rock
belter Area 52 and captivating ballad
Wedding Song.
Overall, the album lives up to its
somewhat insidious title and
accompanying lurid cover art. It is
an album with some unmistakably
uplifting moments, but there is
an irrepressible darkness, which
seeps through the tracks, adding a
bleakness, but also cohesion to the
album. A solid effort from a band
whose constant evolution and genre-
hopping mystery make them always
worth a listen.
WRITTEN BY DAVID KEARNEY
Metal gods Black Sabbath are back on their
anticipated reunion. Its sure to be one youll never
forget. Original band members the Prince of
Darkness himself, Ozzy Osbourne, bassist Geezer
Butler and guitarist Tony Iommi are making a return
to New Zealand for their frst time since performing at
the Great Ngaruawahia Music Festival in January 1973.
Canadians fnest next to Nickelback, obviously
Bryan Adams Bare Bones tour is a series of solo
performances by the star, which led to his most
recent album called, you guessed it, Bare Bones.
Recorded in 2010 it captures sparsely arranged hits by
B-ryan featuring only his distinctive voice and guitar.
Look forward to beautiful acoustic music.
Good friends Luke Thompson and Lydia Cole are
teaming up for an extensive tour this month. From
Kerikeri to Dunedin, the pair are visiting 11 intimate
venues along the way inns, sheds and roadside

critically successful musicians in their own right. The
intimate settings are right up their alley.

With three locations, Penny Lane is Christchurchs longest established
independent record store trading in new and pre-owned records, CDs, and
DVDs. Owner Dave Howard who saw an opportunity in the marketplace
and put his heart and soul for music and collectables into creating a retail-
trading store where people could buy and sell quality items started the
business in 1998. In the years since, Penny Lane has built-up one of the
largest collections of new and top quality pre-owned CDs, DVDs, records
and collectables in the South Island. Theyve become an iconic business in
the Deep South and are proud to keep the tradition alive.

that youd never thought of before. Come in and have a free coffee and
some homemade baking with the friendly folk, and check out those Record

RECORD STORE DAY
JEFFREY STOTHERS
OWNER OF SOUTHBOUND DISTRIBUTION AND RECORD STORE
What are you working on right now?
The new Steve Earle album The Low Highway and Record Store Day LP &
DVD Releases.
Who was an inspiration or idol to you growing up?
Paul Weller I was (still am) a massive fan of The Jam.
When you were a kid, what was your dream job?
To work in a record store!
Where was the last place you went out for dinner?
Oh Calcutta big fan of Indian.
Wheres the best place to get Eggs Benedict?
Well Im not a fan of Eggs Benedict, but I do love breakfast at Conch
Grill.
What has been the best show youve attended this year?
Elvis Costello at The Civic brilliant gig. Peace, Love and
Understanding, so good!
What show are you most anticipating this year?
Well I missed the very frst instore in my own shop, Southbound
Records, (I was in Melbourne for AWME) and it was a great success.
Delaney Davidson and Marlon Williams played. We had such a good
turn out, Delaney is playing again for us for Record Store Day and I am
really looking forward to it.
Whats your guilty pleasure?
Chocolate, red wine and vinyl all the big ones!
What do you most respect about your friends?
Loyalty and also none of them are Queen fans!
A usual Saturday night for you is
If no gigs, catching up on TV shows... with a wine or two.
A usual Wednesday night for you is
I am up late ordering stock and new releases. Most of the companies we
deal with are in the UK or the US, so night time is the best time to be up
talking with them.
One piece of advice youve never forgotten
Once while working with Dolly Parton in London, she said to me
Jeffrey, what goes on the road, stays on the road! And of course it did!
(So dont ask me what it was).
The biggest mistake youve made is
As a buyer for HMV in London, buying way too many copies of The
Psychedelic Furs Midnight-Midnight (1987) think they were in the 50p
bin for a very long time.
The biggest success youve had is
Getting The Mavericks to No 4 in the UK Pop Charts.
New Zealand music needs more
Grit and determination.
Name fve things surrounding you right now.
My trusty iMac, my Arsenal Emirates ticket from the game I went to in
January, The Berlin Public Transport Music Map that needs to be framed
and all the Steve Earle & Record Store Day stock going out the door!
Whats the best record company do you have ever been to?
Dinner at the Factory Records offce in Manchester. Even the menu had
a catalogue no: FAC341. Being sent to Lollapalooza Atlanta to see the
Beastie Boys and then to New York for Woodstock 2, to watch from the
stage, Joe Cocker opening the festival.
SARAH WILLIAMSON
REAL GROOVY STORE MANAGER
Re-write your job description in a sentence:
Welcome to your new role as store manager. Everything is your fault
and enjoy your imminent heart attack.
What did you want to do when you grew up and how close did
you get?
I thought I wanted to be a commando and abseil down buildings
dressed as a ninja, (I am not lying) and I got quite close, because last
year I managed to do about 3 push-ups in a row (not the girly kind.)
Whats your biggest priority right now?
Googling pictures of children falling over.
Whats your favourite venue in the country past and present?
The Crown in Dunners for nostalgia it was dero as (assuming you
were asking favourite venue for getting a cold sore.) If the Kings Arms
had the stage at the other end, so you didnt feel like a knob walking in
when someone is playing, it would be a contender.
Where was the last place you went out for dinner?
Jambalaya. I ate a pulled pork burger and it ruled.
Best gig this year?
The recent New Way Home/Decortica/Snakes of Iron/Resporn/Rule of
Thieves gig at The Rising Sun.
Whats your guilty pleasure?
Boy bands. I love them, and not solely because I am a dirty old perv
(that is a major factor.)
Is tall poppy syndrome a thing?
Yes. She went to my primary school (boooo... Im sorry I will show myself
out.) Yeah, us silly kiwis are so busy trying to be down to earth we dont
know how to give or receive praise well, and just end up being eggs.
A usual Saturday night for you is
Googling pictures of Ryan Gosling. Looking in the mirror and start
crying. Drink Scrumpy and listen to some records or hopefully see some
bands playing at Tiger Spit Garage. Make avocado on toast, hit the sack
and sleep sideways.
A usual Wednesday night for you is
Its the day before payday, so fat Scrumpy from the back of the
fridge and read a graphic novel or six.

Mon 22 Apr VECTOR ARENA, AuCKLAND
Ok, sO what are you doing on Record store Day? after the shops shut? well save some aRRRRR
for Ozzy. Yes, indeed. the original bat-biter and his merry men are coming this way.
Founding band members Ozzy Osbourne, bassist Geezer Butler and guitarist tony Iommi are
booking their tickets, fushing illegal substances and stringing up their gear in anticipation of a
thunderous return to our shores, hitting aucklands Vector arena on sat 20 apr. Believe it or not
this is the frst time theyve been here, as Black sabbath, since the Great Ngaruawahia Music Festival
in January 1973.
hailing from Birmingham, England, sabbath released their self-titled debut album back in February
1970. their follow up album was a seminal masterpiece, Uk #1 album Paranoid and featured the all-
time rock anthems war Pigs and Iron Man, and the title track, Paranoid. this album became the
virtual blueprint of modern day English heavy Metal.
the three originals were schoolmates, initially forming a band called the Polka tulk Blues
Company. seeing this a career limiting option they quickly changed their name to Earth, then, in
1969, to Black sabbath. the name was the title from bassist Geezer Butlers song - he was a big fan of
occult novelist Dennis wheatley.
In spite of their name, the crosses erected onstage, and songs dealing with apocalypse, death, and
destruction, the band members insisted their interest in the black arts was nothing more than
innocuous curiosity. During the mid 70s Osbourne, reeling from drug use and excessive drinking,
quit the band briefy in late 1977 to be eventually replaced by Ronnie James Dio (Rainbow), although
Dio could belt with the best of them, sabbath would never be the same.
sickness and arguments led to various line up changes and friction between Iommi and Dio caused
the singer to quit angrily in 82, to start his own band, Dio. after that various vocalists had a crack:
Dave Donato, Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan, another ex-member of Deep Purple Glenn hughes,
tony Martin, and Dio again. But no one could replace Ozzy, who by now was reviving his own solo
career, thanks in part to former manager, sharon (later his wife).
In mid 2001 the original members found their way back for a new Black sabbath album to be
produced by Rick Rubin. But the band scrapped all the material and the album never materialized.
the band was put on hold throughout 2002 as Osbourne refocused on his solo music and new MtV
reality show, The Osbournes, in which his family was portrayed as a sort of real-life Munsters. we
loved the show and Ozzy became a star - again! the band came back together for the 2004 and 2005
Ozzfest tours.
In June 2012 Black sabbath memorably headlined the 10th Download Festival at Donington before
a crowd of 100,000. they followed that show in august with a much talked about headlining set at
2012s sold-out Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago.
Believe it or not Black sabbath are back for another try, recording their frst new studio album in
more than 33 years, helmed by Rick Rubin and due for release in June. we are holding our breath!

This gritty urban thriller puts a dark and mysterious
character against the twin evils of politics and crime.
Edgar has come home from two years in Miami and
quickly launches a scheme with a motorbike-riding
mugger. Meanwhile, Julia warns the gangster Maicon
that he will be arrested any day.
Tropiclia is a Brazilian artistic movement that arose
in the late 1960s, encompassing art forms such as
theatre, poetry, and music. It shook the structures
of Brazilian popular music and infuenced several
generations. With revealing interviews, archival

its not just tom cruise having
fashbacks in Oblivion. Despite the
flm being something of a modern
rarity a big-budget sci-f tale based
on an original idea it is as blatantly
strewn with elements of other genre
predecessors as its post-apocalyptic
setting is with iconic New York
landmarks. By time the credits roll,
though, youll be ready to forgive the
familiarity as director Joseph Kosinski
seldom overreaches in assembling
this enjoyable, if not (metaphorically)
earth-shattering, tale.
Kosinski quickly establishes Oblivions
scorched Earth setting complete
with a stunningly pulverised moon in
orbit that brings to mind the trippy
objects in A Quiet Earths skyline
and the straight-forward mission
of effective team Jack (Cruise) and
Victoria (Andrea Riseborough), who
work in tandem to locate and repair a
feet of security drones.
Cruise has always made for an
unconvincing everyman, so as we zip
around with him across a stunning
icy and rocky landscape (now
concealing the Big Apple) there
are some cringe-worthy moments
including a terrible Superbowl
monologue. Worse still is his terrible
romantic chemistry with both
Riseborough and Olga Kurylenko,
problematic given the importance
of the latters relationship with
Cruise to the overall plot.
Theres plenty to enjoy if you
can look past the unconvincing
emotional connections
though. Oblivion boasts a bunch
of plot twists, and while many of
them can be seen coming, theres a
refreshing lack of showiness to the
way Kosinski unfurls his narrative.
In not going for one twist too
many or trying for too spectacular
a conclusion, Oblivion proves
more satisfying than youd expect
based on these merely semi-
positive sentiments.

Go behind the relationship between bad-boy Johnny
Cash and his talented yet troubled manager, Saul
Holiff. The story is told through the eyes of Sauls son
searching for his father in the shadow of a legend.
His father left behind a storage locker flled with
relics from a life that Jonathan never knew one that
featured he notorious singer.
By now you would have heard of K-pop, the Korean
supergroup phenomenon thats exploded into
the Western world. This doco follows a year in the
manufacture of a one of these groups and their
exhausting journey to seek fame. The Star Empire is
looking for nine young models, seemingly selected
more for their looks than their singing abilities.
Tom Cruise, Daniel Craig, Mark Wahlberg, Javier
Bardem, Jake Gyllenhaal and Arnold Schwarzenegger
are just a few of the fantastic guests to visit Grahams
trademark orange couch in season 12. In the all-new
show, fans can count on more great guests, laugh-
out-loud stories, outrageous characters, and of course
Graham Norton doing what he does best.
Elijah Wood returns to our TV screens in Wilfred as
Ryan, a suicidal ex-lawyer who fnds salvation in the
form of Wilfred (Jason Gann), a dog to the outside
world that Ryan (and only Ryan) sees as a pushy,
Aussie in a cheap dog costume. Its a quirky comedy
thats like nothing you have seen before.
Defying the typical blonde Barbie doll-like Disney
princess convention, Mulan retells an old Chinese
folktale about a young maiden who, to save her father
from death in the army, secretly goes in his place and
becomes one of Chinas greatest heroes in the process.
Its an uplifting musical tale to inspire young ladies.
Its back for a second season and here to make more
Australians dreams come true. Seal, Joel Madden and
Delta Goodrem return to the coaching chairs, and this
time international superstar Ricky Martin joins the
panel. All four coaches will battle it out each one
hoping to discover and nurture the next great voice.

aPRILs aBOUt tO get a whole lot louder! the Us rock band
aerosmith is planning their only kiwi date at Dunedins new indoor
40,000 capacity stadium on april 24. Grammy award-winner and
american Idol judge steven tyler is bringing his scarves, tie-dye and
attitude to the deep south.
tyler was recently quoted as becoming interested in performing in
scarfe country after reports back from his eldest daughter, Liv one of
the stars of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. when planning the Down Under
leg of the tour, he piped up and made sure Dunedin was also included.
I wonder if bungee jumping at hacketts, jetboating, paraponting or
drinking pinot noir will be on the to Do list whilst hes around?
Local promoters McManus Entertainment are stoked by the major
coup its as big as it gets for the stadium. this is right up there ... its
good for the stadium and absolutely fantastic for the city.
Now into their third decade and still going strong, the founding Bad
Boys of Boston steven (vocals), Joe Perry (guitars), tom hamilton
(bass), and Joey kramer (drums), plus long serving guitarist Brad
whitford, have outdone all the trends and fads of rock n roll. aerosmith
blew out of the early 70s with a sexy Jagger-swagger, metal and glam,
responsible for essential power ballads like Dream On, and gold and
platinum albums such as Get Your Wings, Toys In The Attic and Rocks.
By the mid 80s the star had faded a little. that is until in 1986 tyler and
Perry appeared on Run DMCs cover of walk this way, which brought
a whole new listenership to the band. and aerosmith were back with
smash hits such as Dude Looks Like a Lady, Rag Doll, angel, Love In
an Elevator and Grammy award-winner Janies Got a Gun. MtV also
owe them a debt, having been the driving force behind many innovative
clips during the pastel era.
aerosmith is still making it in music, churning out solo, touring the
pants off and judging talent contests. In 2012, aerosmith released
their 15th studio album, Music From Another Dimension! and kicked off
their Global Warming tour which, appropriately hits Dunedin shortly
before the snowy season. Opening for them will be aussie hard rockers
wolfmother, alongside the Dead Daisies (featuring former INXs
singer Jon stevens) plus wellington-based head Like a hole and Diva
Demolition.
Gates open around 4pm and pump all night. Make sure you go to the
bathroom before leaving, you wont wanna miss anything!
