Lesson Objectives

#2 Lesson 1-3 Objectives o Lesson One: Students will be able to demonstrate that they can construct poetry from the everyday. o Lesson Two: The students will be able to create Found Poetry, using articles discussing the current resignation of the Pope. o Lesson Three: The students will be able to create poems using conversation hearts candy.
I expect my students to perform these objectives with a 100% success rate.

Explain how objectives are aligned with local, state, or national standards: These three lessons all line up with: SCSS 6-1.8 understand the characteristics of poetry (including stanza, rhyme scheme, repetition, and refrain) and drama (including stage directions and the use of monologues). NCCS 9-3.d Use precise words and phrases, telling details, and sensory language to convey a vivid picture of the experiences, events, setting, and/or characters.
The indicator asks students to understand the characteristics of poetry. It highlights the components that the students need to know; stanza, rhyme scheme, repetition, and refrain. My lesson asks students to construct and create poetry from different elements. The first poem was a poem made from the students telephone numbers. This lesson aligns with the SCSS and the NCCS, because they are utilizing the different elements of poetry, as well as conveying a picture using their written words. In lesson two students were to create a Found Poem using a newspaper article. the way this aligns with both standards is because students are once again utilizing the elements of poetry to create this Found Poem. Lesson three asks students to create a poem using candy hearts. This lesson was taught on Valentines Day so I tried to find a way to tie in the holiday and poetry. This lesson aligns with the standards because students are creating poetry using the elements and using precise words to convey their message.

Discuss why your objectives are appropriate in terms of development; prerequisite knowledge, skills; and other student needs: In lessons 1-3 the objectives are appropriate because students are able to create different types of poems using the same poetry elements. Students have been exposed to poetry since the third grade. Students are required to use stanzas, rhyme scheme, repetition, and refrain. During all three lessons the students did just that when creating their poems. In lesson one student were required to write at least on stanza using rhyme scheme. In lesson two students were find a poem in a news article. This was more of a free verse type of poem, but they were still required to

create stanzas. In lesson three students were to use candy hearts to create a poem. In this lesson they were required to create at least two stanzas, and if they had hearts that were the same they were required to use repetition and create refrains. Lesson 4-5 Objectives o Lesson Four: The student will demonstrate an understanding of cultures in the Mayan Civilization. o Lesson Five: Student will be able to understand the order of power in the Mayan civilization. Students will be able to understand the fall of the Mayans.
I expect my students to perform these objectives with a 100% success rate.

Explain how objectives are aligned with local, state, or national standards: In lesson four and five the objectives line up with: SCSS 6-4: The student will demonstrate an understanding of changing political, social, and economic cultures in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. 6-4.3 Compare the contributions and the decline of the Maya, Aztec, and Inca civilizations in Central and South America, including their forms of government and their contributions in mathematics, astronomy, and architecture. NCCS 6.SL.1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led)with diverse partners on grade 6 topics, texts, and issues, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly. Theatre Standard 1: The student will create improvised scenes and written scripts based on his or her own experiences and imagination as well as on literature, history and culture, and current events. T6-1.1 Improvise characters, environments, dialogue, and action both individually and in groups. The indicator for the SCSS standard asks students to demonstrate and understanding of changing political, social, economic cultures in the Americas. My objective lines up with this because we discussed the culture of the Mayans. This lesson covered all aspects of culture including religion, education, and economy. The NCSS standard asks students to engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led)with diverse partners on grade 6 topics, texts, and issues, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly. During my lesson I frequently had students share answers and discuss their opinions on certain subjects with their neighbor. Lesson five used the same standards and indicators. This lesson was a continuation of lesson four. This lesson discussed government and the fall of the Mayan civilization. When I incorporated the Theatre indicator in during lesson four by instructing the students read a readers theatre. This readers theatre reviewed the key points that were discussed during the lesson.

Discuss why your objectives are appropriate in terms of development; prerequisite knowledge, skills; and other student needs: In term of development I feel my objectives for these two lessons are appropriate because they are expanding their knowledge on lost civilizations. This in new information for them, during third grade they studied South Carolina History. During fourth and fifth grade they studied American History, so I feel it is appropriate to expand their knowledge about other countries and history of them. Students need to have the knowledge of the countries surrounding them. They should not live in a bubble and only be privy to their state and nations history. When conflict stirs up with other countries, these students should have a knowledge base to know whether this is a new conflict or a conflict that has been around for a while. This will prepare them for understanding current events.
