This celestial chart from 1564 features an ornate border depicting six ancient philosophers observing the stars alongside scientific instruments. Each philosopher holds objects representing their discipline, such as an armillary sphere or sundial. The border also contains the date and artist's signature cleverly hidden on a pillar sundial. While similar to earlier celestial charts, this work adds decorative portraits and instruments around the perimeter.

This celestial chart is similar in many ways to the pioneering works of
Johannes Honter (also in this exhibition), but with the addition of a spectacular decorative border that includes inset portraits of six influential ancient philosophers: Ptolemy, Plato, Archimedes, Abu Ma'shar, Thales (identified as Milesius), and Euclid. Each philosopher is shown observing the stars while holding objects representative of his discipline. The border also contains numerous scientific instruments including an armillary sphere, sundials, quadrants, a cross staff, and a globe. The date and signature ("JA") are cleverly hidden on a pillar sundial on the lower left portion of the border.
