KEPHALOS HIPPOLOCHOU,
A GENERAL FROM LARISSA DURING THE IMPERIAL ERA
MIRI-ELEKTRA ZCHOU-KONTOGIANNI
This work attempts to sketch the personality of K, general of the
Thessalian federal state during the imperial era. It re-examines the relative epigraphical material and edits an inscription from Larissa, which, despite the
dramatically fragmentary state it is found in, proves to be extremely revealing.
The study leads to the following conclusions:
1. General K, dated to the Augustan period with no other dues to
his identity up to now is identified as his contemporary K
^I from Larissa, connected thus to the eminent family ^I\ being indisputably a distinguished member of it.
and A
2. The reformation of the K family stem from Larissa is proved indispensable and leads to the omission of some intrusive members such as
a) ^H, , coming from Krannon and dated to the second half
of the 2nd century B.C., due to the archaeological facts which unquestionably prove the origin of the decree, in which he is mentioned, to be
Krannon and not Larissa
b) General K himself and
c) ^H, the generals son, winner at the local games in Larissa.
3. It throws light on scientific obscurities concerning prosopographical and
chronological matters. It interprets correctly the meaning of the formulation c omitting the geographical feature attributed to
it. The misinterpretation of this term has led research to pragmatological
and historical inaccuracies. It brings forward and certifies the local and
especially that of Larissas character of the games which included c c ^H in which ^H K, the
generals son was made known as winner.
4. Finally, it reveals the natural and adopted children of general K
leading safely to the conclusion that they shared equivalent legal rights at
least within range of the institution of slave manumissions.
