IV. Procedures Opening: - The teacher will tell the students that she likes to play catch. The teacher has a backyard with a lot of trees, though, so sometimes they get caught! She has to climb up the tree to get the ball. Sometimes, she can grab it easily, and then she just lightly tosses it to the ground. The teacher will then have the students follow the ball with their voices, doing some vocal sirens. - Then, the teacher will say that sometimes, the ball gets really stuck in the tree, and she actually has to shake the tree to get it down! She will have the students pretend to shake the tree. Then, she will tell them that we are singing a song about shaking the tree! Main Body: - The teacher will ask the students to pay attention to what she does with her hands at the end of the song. She will have the students keep the beat with their spider fingers. The teacher will sing, Shake Them Simmons Down for the students. The students will put their finger on their nose when they know what she did with her hands.

The teacher will call on one student and ask she did with her hands. The student will reply that she shook them from high to low. If no students are able to identify this, the teacher will sing it again. The teacher will also explain what a simmon is to the students. The teacher will then ask the students to listen again, and this time count how many times the teacher sings the phrase shake that tree. The teacher will have the students use spider fingers to the beat, and the teacher will sing the song again. The teacher will ask every student to show her on their chest how many times she sang shake that tree. The students will respond with 3. If none of them get this, the teacher will sing it again. The teacher will then tell the students that it is their turn to learn the song. The teacher will say, When Im pointing to myself, it means that Im the only one singing. When Im pointing to you, it means its your turn to sing the song. The teacher will divide the song into four phrases. The teacher will sing phrase one, and the students will echo while keeping a steady beat. The teacher will sing phrase two, and the students will echo while keeping a steady beat. The teacher will sing phrase three, and the students will echo while keeping a steady beat. The teacher will sing phrase four, and the students will perform the hand motions with the teacher. The teacher will then tell the students that we are going to sing longer phrases, so to listen for a bit longer! The teacher will sing phrases one and two, and the students will echo while keeping a steady beat. The teacher will sing phrases three and four, and the students will echo while keeping a steady beat, adding the hand motions at the end. The teacher will put the two phrases together, and will tell the students to listen longer for the whole song. The teacher will sing the entire song, and the students will echo keeping the steady beat. If there are any problem areas, the teacher will repeat those sections and have the students echo. The teacher will then tell the students that we are going to learn motions to the song! The teacher will have the students stand up and hold hands to make a big circle. The teacher will tell the students that for the first verse, they will just clap their hands until the very end, where they do the hands shaking downward on shake them simmons down. The teacher will then have all of the students sing the first verse, clapping their hands. The teacher will then tell them to use their ears and listen for what changes as she sings! The teacher will sing the second verse of the song. The teacher will ask the students to put their finger on their nose if they know what changed. She will call on one student, who will reply, You said circle right.

The teacher will tell the students that we are going to do just that! She will model how they will walk to the right, and will ask the students to tell her when she stopped. They will respond, when you sang shake them simmons down. She will then show them which way they are walking. They will walk to the right, and sing the second verse. - Then, the teacher will tell the students for the next verse, we are going to change directions! She will remind them which way is left, and they will sing the third verse while walking left. - Then, the teacher will tell them that all of the boys need to take one step forward. She will tell the girls to clap their hands for this verse, and the boys will dance on their own. The students will do this while singing the fourth verse of the song. - For the last verse, the teacher will tell the students that we are switching! The boys will clap, and the girls will dance on their own. They will then do this while singing the fifth verse of the song. - ***Contingency Plan***: Instead of freestyle dancing, if the kids are rowdy, the teacher will have the boys take four steps in and four steps out for their verse, and the same for the girls. Closure: - The teacher will then put every verse together! She will remind the students that they first clap, then circle right, then change directions, then boys go in the center, than girls go in the center. The class will sing through the whole song, doing every movement! V. Assessment 1. The teacher will monitor and listen to the children as they sing and perform the movements to Shake Them Simmons Down to determine if they have mastered the song.
