PRIDE AND PREJUDICE

This masterpiece was originally published in 1813. It opens with the memorable line: It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. Jane Austen wrote the first draft of the novel, originally called First impressions, in the 1790s, while living at home with her family at Steventon Rectory in Hampshire. Most of the places in this work are fictional, but are based upon the authors personal knowledge of rectories and country houses in the south of England. The main point of Janes fiction is about society. It is her exploration of the manners and morality of nineteenth century England that makes her romantic stories so popular and enduring.
