Switch Plate Cover Tutorial March 1, 2009

By koala brains
What you’ll need: Pretty paper (I used scrapbook paper), craft glue (I used tacky glue), craft
knife, Modge Podge, 2 foam brushes, acrylic sealer & other typical craft supplies.

1. Measure the switch plate from edge to edge. The

dimensions of this one is about 5 1/4" x 3 1/2".

2. Cut paper to the dimensions plus 1/8” so for mine, I

cut 5 3/8” x 3 5/8”.

3. Center the switch plate over the wrong side of the

paper and trace the rectangle and holes for the
screws.

4. Use a craft knife to cut out the rectangle and holes.

Note: The holes don’t have to be perfectly round. Just
be sure they are a little smaller as opposed to bigger
than what you drew.

5. Apply a thin layer of craft glue. Be sure the entire

face is covered (don’t worry about the edges yet).
Place the paper on the cover making sure you align
with the holes. Use your fingers to gently press into
place and smooth out any bubbles. Let dry for 5
minutes before proceeding.

6. Cut a slit on each corner as shown.

7. Apply Modge Podge to the edges of the switch
plate. Note: I add a light amount of Modge Podge.

8. Press one of the long sides down as shown.

9. Overlap the corners. You’ll probably need to dab

some Modge Podge to adhere the corners down. Do
this to each end of the long side.

10. Your corner should look something like this. Now

repeat steps 8 & 9 to the other long side.
Press each side down (step 8) to ensure the paper has
adhered to the cover. You may need to reapply
Modge Podge. Let dry for about 5-10 minutes.

11. Apply a thin layer of Modge Podge.

12. Let dry for about 20 minutes then apply another

thin layer. Wait another 20 minutes to dry. Flip it over
and trim the excess paper from the edges. Apply
acrylic sealer to protect your work. Now it’s time to put
it back on the wall. Stand back and admire!

Note: I used double sided paper and loved each side so decided in step 5 to use one of each side since I was
covering two switch plates while putting together this tutorial. Although this is in sequential order, I switch back
and forth between the two different covers so after step 5, just disregard that the paper differs from one pic to
another. ☺ If anything is unclear, please email me: koalabrains@gmail.com.
