You and your partner have been hired as genetic counselors to research
and give a short presentation on a genetic disorder at the local
conference of Jr. Geneticists (which happens to take place in your
science classroom! ;) In your audience are other training genetic
counselors interested in understanding genetic disorders.
Process:
Using your textbook and appropriate websites, you will:
1. Research a genetic disorder.
2. Create an artifact
3. Present: Prepare an informational presentation NO MORE THAN 5
MINUTES LONG that includes ALL of the following about your genetic
disorder:
1. Brief Summary of the disorder - what it is and what are its
effects.
2. How it is inherited (the cause of it). Determine if the disorder
is:
a. Autosomal (body chromosomes) Dominant
b. Autosomal (body chromosomes) Recessive
c. Sex-Linked Dominant (& which chromosome it is linked to
X or Y)
d. Sex-Linked Recessive (& which chromosome it is linked to
X or Y)
e. Caused by a DNA mutation (addition, deletion, or
substitution) OR
f. Caused by a chromosomal abnormality (too many or
missing chromosomes)
3. Symptoms of the disorder.
4. Prevalence of the disorder in the larger population (ratio of
people who have the disorder compared to ratio of people who
don't; 1 in 100, 1 in 1,000, etc.)
5. Medical treatment for the disorder.
6. Interesting facts about the disorder. (i.e. facts about the
discovery of the disorder, current research on it, agencies that
support individuals with the disorder/how people can help, more
common in males or females, anyone famous with disorder, etc.)
