Emily Ude April 9, 2013 EDUC 201-01 Reflective Journal There are four different learning techniques and

styles within the classroomconcrete sequential, concrete random, abstract sequential, and abstract random. Each individual learns differently and prefers different methods of teaching. Personally, I am a concrete sequential learner and can relate best to those students. Concrete sequential learners need and enjoy structured situations. Such individuals enjoy working with handson projects, like to be ordered and organized, prefer clear and definite directions, and strive for perfection. As a concrete sequential learner, I found it difficult to perform my highest work ability in many different classroom environments. During lessons and tests, I needed order and quiet to be able to focus. It would become difficult and frustrating for me if I were unable to understand material due to lack of control within the classroom. I strive for perfection and often look over my completed work multiple times before turning it in. While I am very time-oriented, I usually make use of the maximum time allowed for tests or assignments. As many other concrete sequential learners do, we prefer to work step by step to reassure that we did not miss any critical steps or ideas. During the earlier years of schooling, finishing classwork became a race throughout the classroom and I struggled because I was usually one of the last people to turn work in. It was not that I did not understand the concepts and ideas of the material given to me but, simply that I worked differently than other students in the classroom. Art and English class became a challenge when assignments required creativity and imagination. As a concrete sequential learner I

prefer exact directions and structure in order to complete assignments to my best ability. The challenge was became beginning projects rather than completing them. Each individual student learns differently, whether they are concrete sequential learners like me, concrete random learners, abstract sequential learners, or abstract random learners. Educators must have the flexibility to teach to each student and accommodate individual learning styles. Preparing lessons that can be interchangeable will maximize each students learning ability as well as ease their learning experience.
