Lesson Title: Its About Time

Area of Study: Math

Teacher Name: Ms. Hunter

Grade Level: 1st grade

Duration of Instruction: 1 hour 10 minutes

Date: March 12th Academic Standards

CCSS math content 1.MPB.3 tell and write time in hours and half hour using analog and digital clocks

Objective

The learner will be able to tell time and write in hours and half hours using an analog and digital clock.

Rationale Statement

Younger children are very inquisitive and they like to know every detail of the day. All day long they ask when we go to lunch, when do we go home, or is it recess yet. A lot of students have special needs and accommodations in my class. Students function better when they know when something is going to happen. We have a huge clock in the room and a schedule. Learning to tell time will help students know what is expected of them and when. It will ease some students minds because I have a few students who hate not known whats going to happen next. Telling time links with Gardners, Logical-mathematical intelligence theory, this consists of the capacity to analyze problems logically, carry out mathematical operations, and investigate issues scientifically. In Howard Gardners words, it entails the ability to detect patterns, reason deductively and think logically. This intelligence is most often associated with scientific and mathematical thinking. Logical mathematical intelligence supports time telling because telling time allows students to see the pattern of when things happen or when things can approximately happen. A student will know bedtime occurs around 8:00-9:00 pm and not 12:00pm while school is going on. It will provide more logical thinking for students.

Introduction

The teacher will say today is Monday. What time do we go to music? What time do we go to lunch? When is it time to go home? In life we all do things at a certain time. We use a clock to tell what time to do certain things.

Activities

Teacher will let students watch and listen to the Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle on the promethean board. After watching and listening to The Grouchy Ladybug we will have a discussion about time. http://youtu.be/FwVe-D_NpFU The teacher will use a clock to explain the terms hour hand, hour, minute hand, o clock and digital. The teacher will explain how the hour hand and the minute hand show the time on some clocks. Teacher will also explain how digital clocks show time using only numbers. The teacher will show the students that when the time shows oclock the minute hand or the long hand is on 12 and the hour hand or the short hand is on the named hour. The teacher will demonstrate how to write the time in two ways. Ex. 4:00 and 4 oclock. The teacher will give each student an individual clock and dry erase board. The teacher and student will practice finding and writing given times. (whole group) Students will show me on the clock : 1. 2. 3. 4. When they go to bed. 8:30 When they wake up. 6:30 What time they go to lunch. 10:30 The time they go recess. 12:00

Teacher will say the given times and student will show the time on their clock and write it on their white board. (small group)

Materials and Resources

Promethium board Elmo large analog clock 24 small analog clocks computers white boards makers

Instructional Adaptations

Small group Extended time Test read aloud Modified assignments Preferential seating Oral testing

Ongoing Assessment

The student will practice telling time by playing a time telling games http://www.primarygames.com/time/question3.htm http://www.kidsolr.com/earlychildhood/page4.html Examples of Effective Assessment http://www.fi.edu/time/Journey/JustInTime/time_quiz.html

End-of-Lesson Assessment

Teacher will let students listen to and watch The Grouchy Ladybug. As each time is said students will use their small analog clocks to display the time and they will also write the time on their white boards to show accuracy in telling time on an analog clock and digital clocks. http://youtu.be/RFNZvJbzmms Students will fill in clocks that correspond with our school schedule. Clocks will be analog and digital.
