Department of Outdoor Education Program Design Form The program design form is completed by the lead facilitator for workshops. This form should be submitted to, as well as reviewed and signed by the Outdoor Center Director or designate prior to the date of programming.

Program Outcomes Based on information provided in the client intake and follow-up conversation by the lead facilitator, as a result of this program, participants will: a. Identify areas of communication that need to be improved and strategies to do that. b. Learn more about each other so that they are able to better support and encourage each other. c. Participate in a shared experience together. Client Information Based on information provided in the client intake and follow-up conversation by the lead facilitator. Consider emotional, physical (fitness level), social, and intellectual characteristics, as well as socioeconomic, gender, and context specific information (#, age range). 20 adult participants (13 males, 7 females) of varying fitness levels. All leaders within the church (i.e. pastor, youth minister, childrens program coordinator, elders, etc. paid and volunteer)

Program Schedule Use this format to provide an overview of the program design. Include intake arrangements, housekeeping, safety briefings, all program activities, breaks, etc. Put logistical or activity specific information in the comments column. Time Activity Staff Comments (e.g. set-up, intended goal matching, adaptations) 7:30 AM Arrive at OC MS, LJ, Initiate set-up/ prep for the program. Check Lake Laurel Lodge CS and challenge course for any irregularities. i.e. guy lines etc. Set up X Ladder, and Kings Swing. 8:45-9:15 AM Expect group to arrive MS, LJ, Group is coming from Milledgeville, GA. Expect the group to CS arrive relatively on time, but may also be early or late. 9:009:20 AM Bathroom, Walk to Course, Intro BG Location: Lake Laurel Parking lot, Brief tour of Lake Laurel Lodge Bathrooms, head to pavilion/grassy area. This will reduce the distractions from the tango tower. Tell participants to leave all jewelry and empty pockets before proceeding up to challenge course. Once on the grassy area, introduce the facilitators and lead into Five Finger Contract and Challenge by Choice. These two activities will frame the days events whilst establishing the groups expectations. Briefly hit overarching safety precautions i.e. dehydration, weather, sunburn and heat etc. 9:20-9:35 AM Alien, Friend, Tiger, Fish LJ Location: Grassy area next to pavilion. Safety: Lack of shade may lead to sunburn. The purpose of this activity is to express to the participants how important communication is and how there are different forms of communications (body language). This is also a fun and interactive activity that opens the group up to each other. This activity may be run multiple times if the group completes it within a reasonable time frame. 9:35-10:05 AM Bull Ring CS Location: Grassy area next to pavilion. Safety: Clear debris prior to activity for participants to walk. Inform participants to pay attention to their surroundings and keep track of where they are headed or what they are headed into. This activity focuses on supporting each other in that if one individual does not focus on their positioning, it affects the whole group.

Location: Grassy area next to pavilion. Reiterate how each of the participants holds a specific position within the church in order to maintain a constant and affective environment. This activity demonstrates this concept in how each one of the participants is related to the other and that they all need each other in order to be affective. Location: Grassy area next to pavilion. Safety: Reiterate challenge by choice and that if participants feel uncomfortable or painful to announce it and step out of the knot. Communication is a huge aspect in human knot, especially as the group begins to split off and separate. Location: Grassy area next to pavilion. Many different areas of communication will be drawn out during this activity and the debriefing needs to hit on how the group did or didnt do. Follow the what, so what and now what steps. Location: Lake Laurel Lodge, and maybe a rectangle. Allow time for all participants to refill water and go to the restroom. Also, allow time for participants to walk leisurely to high challenge course area. LJ leads participants to maybe a rectangle, where we begin our high challenge portion of the program. Location: maybe a rectangle. Safety: helmets on when entering under the guy lines and placing unused helmets happy turtles. MS and LJ tell participants about harness and helmets and how to properly fit, use and wear equipment. Teach participants the basic spot using spot quando. MS: Group 1 LJ: Group 2 Group 1 Location: Tango Tower (Yurt Side) Safety: Let go of the X Ladder when being lowered or if rope burn happens. Participants rely on each other by communicating to pull the middle of the X down so that the other participant may climb up.

This will help isolate communication issues and strengths. Group 2 Location: Tango Tower (Lake Side) Safety: If participant cant hold rope, make sure they let go instead of sliding down the rope. Participants have to communicate in order to successful climb the Kings ladder. This element focuses on a pair of participants remembering each other i.e. Handing the rope back and forth as partners swing back and forth. Ask participants about the challenges associated with communication during the activity. When the participants werent communicating, did they struggle more? Did communication boost the success of the activity? What does this mean when helping the success of others in the church environment? Reiterate the elements findings and how it relates to the church environment. Specifically discuss how participants were able to support their comrades when not actually in the belay system. Participants will walk back to Lake Laurel Lodge for bath room break and for the final activity. Location: Lake Laurel Lodge Classroom. Safety: Make sure that blindfolded people are comfortable and in a safe environment i.e. corners of tables. Also make sure participants do not move too quickly. The group will be challenged to communicate effectively even though participants have lost certain senses i.e. sight or hearing. Discus the days findings and what the major take-a-ways are from the experience. Conclude program by hanging out the program evaluations. Prep the group on departing and end program. Clean up and complete evaluations on facilitators and depart.
