Argument Structure Notes: Argument is about controlled discourse focused around a single topic at a time.

me. At the center of every argument is a special topic, called an issue. Issue is defined as a meeting of the following 3 criteria o It must be clearly understood and grasped by all those involved. o The issue must be viewable by 2 or more clear points of view: perspectives. o The issue is geared toward a greater understanding, solution, or resolution as an outcome. Solution is short-term fix, but resolution is lasting change if not permanent. o Sometimes the best we can hope for is greater understanding and we have to be content with that. The most successful form of argument, ever, is called Rogerian Argument o Issue Topic Sides Thesis (Your POV) o Opposition o Your POV o Common grounds or understanding o Conclusion (academia) What topic are you going to argue about? o The struggle of ADHD What are 2 different viewpoints that can be held on the topic you selected? o Whether to prescribe medication or not. o Who ACTUALLY has ADHD and who doesnt? What is your opinion on this topic? o I believe that medication should be prescribed because I know for a fact that I would be unable to do anything without it. Some people are against giving their children heavy medication to help them and believe there are other ways. Also I believe that everyone should taken the certain tests to test if they have ADHD or not because some people are just lazy and want the medication to motivate them more.
