1. You can use your GrandCentral number to send and receive SMS

can send messages from the mobile or from the phone.
2. Make phone calls using the web or your mobile/land line phone.

transcripts, based on internal Google technology currently being used by

problem with the original service – it didn’t allow text messaging, so you
had to tell people your mobile number as well if you wanted to send and
receive text messages with them. Now, Google Voice will accept text
messages and forward them on to your mobile phone. You can respond
to those messages as well. Google is using the existing Gateway
technology (which is used by Google Chat) to power this feature.

Voicemail Transcription: Google also added a nifty transcription feature

website to administer the account and view activity. This interface has

undergone a makeover - It now looks very much like a comprehensive

Gmail inbox with tabs for Voicemail, SMS, Recorded calls, Placed calls,
Received calls and Missed calls. And the Google Voice is easily integrated
into the list of links to Google apps at the top left of each application. All
SMS and transcribed voicemails are searchable and taggable, which is
very useful and will change the way people interact with these messages.
Google also says that full integration with Gmail is coming, but won’t say
when. Personally, having all my email, SMS and transcribed voicemails
in a single inbox could be life-changing. You can also respond to text
messages from the interface and initiate phone calls, which then calls
your designated phone and then the recipient.

Conference and International Calls: Google Voice also added a

conference calling feature allowing conference calls of up to six
participants and recording abilities. International calls can also be made
through the system at very reasonable rates. For example, voice calls to
France are $0.02 per minute, to France mobile phones $0.15 per minute,
and to China $0.02 per minute. These rates are about the same as
Skype’s international phone rates.

Our First Impression:

Google is finally bringing us the voice service that was promised back in
2006. With Grandcentral, you no longer have to wrestle with 3 or more
phone numbers and multiple email and texting devices. You give out one
phone number, administer it with a website or voice menu, and forward
calls to various devices depending on who’s calling and when.

Google has also fixed most of the limitations with the original service.
Outages are a thing of the past, they say, and there won’t be any further
reassigning of phone numbers. The new SMS feature means you don’t
have to give out your mobile phone separately. And the voicemail
transcription and search feature is a great addition. Crunch Network: CrunchGear drool over the sexiest new gadgets and
hardware.
Still, users have to get over a big initial hurdle - getting all their friends to
start using a new phone number instead of the old ones. Business cards
are to be thrown out, new ones printed. Contact cards updated. Etc.
There’s nothing Google can do to fix this problem.

But they can prove that the service is reliable. No dropped calls. No SLATE MAGAZINE
outages. Proper support even though its a free product. If they do that
they can conceivably control the phone numbers for millions of Winners and losers in the
people…and eventually find a way to monetize all that power.

If you want the computerized “announcer” to identify the song, you press
the center button for a longer time, and you keep holding it to start the
playlist roll call. When you hear a playlist you want, you press the button
again. Smaller buttons at the top and bottom of this earbud controller
adjust the volume up and down. It sounds more complicated than it is.
While the voice function is in use, the music keeps playing in the
background, at reduced volume.

The computerized voice, available in multiple languages, is hardly

perfect. Like all such computer voices, its cadence can sound robotic, and
it clips some syllables, but I found it perfectly understandable.

The spoken names of your particular songs, artists and playlists are
added when you sync the Shuffle with iTunes. The voice quality is best
when using a Mac with the latest operating system. It is slightly cruder
on Windows or older Mac operating systems.

Even on the latest Macs, the voice got some words wrong. For a live
concert album, it pronounced the word “live” as “liv,” and in another
case, it pronounced the Roman numeral “IV” as “eye-vee.”

There are some other downsides. The claimed battery life is just 10
hours, down from 12 on the prior Shuffle model. You can’t fully operate
the Shuffle with regular earbuds or headphones that lack the special
controller. And, if you have numerous playlists, it could be tedious
waiting for the voice control to say all their names until it reaches the
one you want.

Still, Apple has packed a lot of new intelligence into a truly tiny music
player, at a pretty low price.

This one’s a bit rough at the moment, but a true boon to Gmail geeks. If
you’re using Gmail’s tasks to manage to-dos and email duties, gTask
Sidebar simply loads the task list—normally popped up in the corner or
as a stand-alone window—in the Firefox sidebar. Unfortunately, it
doesn’t resize it for optimal display over in that corner, and those with
really long task lists or even short ones might not like having the control
buttons put so far down from the tasks themselves (I doctored my
screenshot a bit to show you all the elements at once). And gTask Sidebar
only activates as a status bar link—a keyboard shorcut, or even just
toolbar button, is sorely needed here. But taking your Gmail tasks
anywhere you go on the net is a helpful hack, and that’s delivered. Now

Still, by pointing VLC to it, I got a multi-track stream of every track on a

aware that Songbird can create track playlists from any page, too.

Why Obama Had No Choice

MAR 12, 2009 12:51A.M.

Fred Kaplan:

In the coming months, if he can be taken at his word,

President Obama will open talks with Syria and invite Iran to
join a regional conference on Afghanistan and Pakistan.
China will have to play some part in this conference, too, as it
will with forums on North Korea. And if any progress is made
toward Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, he will have to
pressure the Israelis to make compromises on policy toward
Gaza and the settlements.

All of these things will be difficult enough. They will be

harder still if domestic critics can scream that Obama’s policy
is being manipulated by “that Saudi agent” or “that Chinese
apologist” who’s running the intelligence community.

They will anyway, of course. But the point is well-taken.
