Rising Lake Levels
FortisBC is advising local residents that Kootenay Lake
levels are expected to increase rapidly over the next few
days due to natural spring runof patterns. During this
time, lake levels are driven by natural infows as a result
of melting snow pack and precipitation and are subject to
sudden, large increases.
Current lake levels are: 1742.5 f. at Queens Bay
7 day forecast: Up a foot a day for the next week then
leveling of at around 1750.0 but higher levels are possible.

Mon - We purchased cofee for each staf member and provided
them with baked goods donated by parents.
Tues - We provided our staf with fruit platters, and more baked

Wed - Wordle Weds. We asked each student to describe in one
word their teachers and principal! Te words were then
arranged into a picture with the teachers name under-
neath to decorate the class door. Each teacher also received
a card with their students pictures and signatures.
Turs -When we asked local businesses, they ofered many amaz-
ing prizes from gif cards, a round of golf, an oil change
and even an ottoman to name a few. Te teachers names
were drawn, and one by one, they picked a prize. Each
prize was in a gif bag with only a business card outside to
suggest at what was inside. Trading was allowed! We had
so many donations a few bonus prizes were reserved for
Friday morning!
Fri - Pot luck lunch. Parents donate food and time to provide
our staf with a great lunch complete with virgin pia
coladas and daiquiris and, of course, dessert.
Staf appreciation week ran May 6-10 this year and was
organized by PAC (Parent Advisory Council) and parent
volunteers. Tis year we had many ways of showing our
staf how much we appreciated them:

Join Arun Gandhi, as he addresses violence through
education and his work with impoverished children using
the lessons that he learned from his famous grandfather,
Mahatma Gandhi. Tis lecture takes place at the Brilliant
Cultural Centre, May 17.
Gandhi has carried on the legacy of his famous grand-
father by addressing violence, particularly in India and
other areas of the developing world. His work has focused
on children. Gandhi states, Poverty is the worst form of
violence, and must be tackled on all fronts to ensure hu-
man rights and human dignity to those who are victims of
societal exploitation.
Gandhis organizations have focused on addressing child
labor and traf cking, particularly in the global sex trade
industry. He is committed to tackling these issues through
education. Te Gandhi World Wide Education Institute
has rescued children from the poorest slums of India, and
provided them with shelter and basic education.
Nonviolence in a Violent World
Gandhis talk is entitled Lessons Learned From My
Grandfather: Nonviolence In A Violent World. Tis lecture
will be held at the Brilliant Cultural Centre, 1876 Brilliant
Road, in Castlegar on Friday, May 17, at 7:00 pm. Tere
will be a special music performance by local artist Soniko.

s far back as 1923, the children of Kaslo
have performed this traditional dance which
originated in England to herald the begin-
ning of spring. This year the dance will be
performed by Grade One and Two students
from J.V. Humphries School here in Kaslo.
They will be directed by the Grade One teacher
Yvonne Dodd and accompanied by Jane Ballantyne
on flute, Anne Heard on guitar, Aurora Smith on violin and
Dawna Whitney on harp.

Five Early Warning Signs Of
Childrens Mental Illness
Parents are prepared to deal with their kids cuts and
scrapes, but research shows they are largely unequipped to
grapple with or even identify possible mental health issues
in their children. In recognition of Childrens Mental Health
Awareness Week (May 5 to 11), the RBC Childrens Mental
Health Project is launching Know the Signs, a national cam-
paign highlighting fve early warning signs to help parents
identify possible indicators of childhood mental illness:
Mood changes/swings: Persistent sadness or withdrawal.
Anxiety: Frequent, prolonged worrying.
Sudden change in grades: Poor concentration can lead
to anxiety about going to school or a change in classroom
success.
Heightened emotions: Exaggerated fear or anger for
seemingly no reason.
Behavioural changes or acting out: Out-of-character
changes in behavior or personality.
Kaitlin Hrudey, daughter of Kelly Hrudey former NHL
goaltender and hockey commentator, now 20, was diag-
nosed with an anxiety disorder eight years ago. Learn-
ing how to manage Kaitlins illness took time, with many
sleepless nights and struggles, but today, Kaitlin and Kelly
are sharing their story for the frst time to help raise aware-
ness and reinforce the importance of early intervention.
You know your children. Even if they arent telling you
somethings wrong, as a parent, you instinctively know,
said Kelly Hrudey. We noticed changes in our daughters
behavior but chalked it up to a stage. I wish I had known
the warning signs to look for, so we could have recognized
the problem earlier. Tis is why awareness and early detec-
tion are so important.
According to Kaitlin, its essential that parents and chil-
dren have an open dialogue: When I was 12, I remember
knowing something was wrong, but didnt know what it
was, which really scared me. I knew the right thing to do
was to tell my parents so we could get through this together.
Nearly one in fve Canadian children and adolescents
will be touched by a mental disorder serious enough to
cause social, emotional or academic problems. Tis is not
the kind of struggle that children outgrow on their own.
70 per cent of adults with a mental illness frst experienced
symptoms as children or youth.
A child who seems to be going through a dif cult phase
could actually be sufering from a treatable mental disor-
der, yet most afected children do not get the help they
need because parents dont recognize the warning signs,
said Rona Maynard, mental health advocate and author
of Silent Families, Sufering Children and Youth, a white
paper on the fndings of the 2012 RBC Childrens Mental
Health Project Parents poll.
Most parents know that mental illness touches every-
one. According to the 2012 RBC Childrens Mental Health
Parents Poll, 57 per cent of respondents know of an adult
in their family with a diagnosed mental health condition,
while 28 per cent are related to a diagnosed child. Despite
that level of awareness, the fndings reveal that theres a
clear disconnect between parents and children in being
able to talk about mental illness:
Most parents assume that if their child had a mental
health concern, either they or the other parent would be
the frst to know.
Among young people who have visited the Kids Help
Phone website, friends were the confdante of choice (50
per cent), with mom or dad a distant second. Twenty per
cent of youth would not confde in anyone.
Most parents would take a wait-and-see approach to
symptoms such as exaggerated fear, constant anxiety about
going to school, persistent sadness or moodiness and a
sudden change in grades. Experts agree that the best solu-
tion is to raise awareness of the warning signs among par-
ents, and encourage open discussion with their children.
Just admitting to your kids that youve had a bad day
at work or are worried about Grandmas health can be a
conversation-starter, added Maynard. By talking about
your own feelings, youre encouraging your child to open
up. Youre boosting the odds that young people will get the
help they need and break the cycle of frustration.

British Columbia Adds
New Area Code
In response to the increasing demand for new phone
numbers in British Columbia, Te Canadian Radio-tele-
vision and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) is
adding a new area code to all of BC. Beginning June 1 the
new area code, 236, will ensure BC residents and business-
es continue to have enough phone numbers.
Individuals do not need to change their existing phone
number, and in areas where there is still a suf cient supply
of 604, 778 and 250 numbers they will continue to be given
out as long as they are available. Where they are no longer
available or where a customer chooses, afer June 1, people
and businesses receiving a new phone number may get
one with the 236 code. Timing and availability of phone
numbers with the new area code will vary by community,
depending upon the local inventory and demand.
Te geographic boundaries that govern long distance
calling will not be afected. Te Western Telecommunica-
tions Alliance is working to inform all customers and busi-
nesses about the additional area code. To ensure a seamless
transition to adding the new area code, 236, businesses are
encouraged to begin making any necessary changes right
away by reprogramming communications systems and
equipment. For example, businesses that restrict long dis-
tance calls will need to reprogram their equipment to ac-
cept the 236 area code as local. Residential customers will
not need to make any changes to their equipment.
Tree-digit numbers such as 211, 311, 411, 611 and 911
emergency services will not be afected.
