Steven Svoboda The Nervous System

- A complex network of nerves and cells that carry messages to and from the brain and spinal cord to various parts of the body.

Central Nervous System -Made up of the brain and spinal cord .

Peripheral Nervous System


- consists of the nerves and neurons that reside or extend outside the central nervous system

Somatic Nervous System -responsible for voluntary body movement and for sensing external stimuli Autonomic Nervous System -Controls involuntary actions, such as the beating of your heart

Enteric Nervous System -A complex network of nerve fibers that innervate the organs within the abdomen

Sympathetic Nervous System - activates the fight or flight response

Parasympathetic Nervous System -conserves energy as it slows the heart rate, increases intestinal and gland activity, and relaxes sphincter muscles
