Activity_Ch17- Build me a Dome! Background !

Since the rise of river valley civilizations, the building of massive structures has paralleled the development of civilized society. These structures increasingly became associated with religious beliefs since their cost in labor, materials, and time was enormous. Only a divine purpose could justify such an expense. ! For the Western World, Rome has set the standard for dome construction. It is a notion that the dome was viewed by Roman architects as a divine structure whose construction is a secret held by the gods. Lacking the divine knowledge to build an unsupported dome, Rome built its domes using a secondary structure acting as a frame or skeleton for the actual dome. To the Romans, building a dome without any visible structural support, was a deed only gods can complete. The Pantheon, Romes largest and arguably best known dome, is depicted below. Task ! You and your fellow engineers must design a dome for Mr.Vs nal resting place. The nal project must contain the following: A monochromatic sketch of the structure from a frontal view. The dome must be 1 x the height of the structure it rests on. The cupola atop the dome must be reminiscent of Brooklyn, NY. An itemized list of the three most critical materials youll use to construct the dome. A type-written paragraph detailing how you intend to use the materials listed above to construct the dome. Be sure to consider the realities and avoid omissions that would technically prevent the structure from being built. Include all the items enumerated above in a document sent to Mr.V as a PDF le.The document should be topped with a proper heading and the name of the person submitting the document. Every other group members name should appear at the very end of the document. iPad students can give Mr.V the document at the start of class Friday using Instashare. Non-iPad groups can use the camera on their phones to digitize the dome sketch and then incorporate the image into the nal document. That document can be submitted to Mr.V as a PDF le via email at mr.v@worldhistoryreview.org before entering class on Friday.
