Leslie Wang Period 4 3/2/13 Baby Battle 1. What is your reaction to the first paragraph?

Why has Cheever chosen to write such a brief opening? How does the second paragraph in the essay explain the point she has made in this introductory paragraph? How does the opening paragraph interact with the essays title? The very last paragraph? The first paragraph provides a shocking introduction that serves to grab the readers attention. To say that there is a war going on is implying that some major event is occurring and that the issue is a prevalent one. Cheever uses the short but effective opening sentence to allow her audiences imaginations to jump to conclusions. In her second paragraph, however, Cheever elaborates that the war in New York is actually a social conflict between working women and stay-at-home mothers. The first paragraph interacts with the title of the excerpt in that the word war implies that battles are being fought, hence the title, Baby Battle. The last paragraph also alludes to the baby battle, in that the word, fight is mentioned to signal a conflict. 2. Where in the essay does she state the first part of the argument? The second? What would you say, then, was her major proposition? State it in your own words. Cheever states the first part of her argument in paragraph 29, where she claims that sleep deprivation hampers womens ability to be tolerant of other groups of women. She also states that men have yet to contribute their fare share of doing as much as women do in the household despite the fact that women do nearly as much as men. 6. Which examples of humor do you think best serve her argument? Cheever uses humor when she speaks of her experiences as a mother. Some of the more humorous aspects of her story include the times when she was on the airplane with a crying baby, and another passenger asked if she could control her baby, and her retort, asking if they were saying that she was a bad mother, was, as I found, pretty funny. 7. What do the quotes add to the essay? The quotes from the essay add dialogue to the essay, making it seem less formal and more casual. It also emphasizes the foolishness Cheever sees in each of those people, especially when she describes the exclamations of the Citibank vice president as squawking.
