Digital Unit Plan Template Unit Title: Linear Equations and Chirping Crickets Content Area:

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s): CA Content Standard for Algebra I

Name: Lena Meyer Grade Level: 8-12

6.0 Students graph a linear equation and compute the x- and y-intercepts. They are also able to sketch the region defined by linear equality
Big Ideas:

1. Graph a line from ordered pairs. 2. Compute and plot the x- or the y-intercept from a linear equation and then use the slope to find a second point in order to graph a line. 3. Learn to identify and use real life examples describing linear equations.
Unit Goals and Objectives:

Graph a linear equation using ordered pairs and plot the x- and y-intercept Use the slope to find a second point to help finishing graphing the line Compute the slope from the graph of a line or when given two points Recognize slope as rate of change of y in relation to x Practice new content with a real life examples

Unit Summary:

According to the California Content Standards 6.0 for Math, in this unit the students will learn and practice the steps involved to identify, compute According to the California Content Standards 6.0 for 7th and 8th grade Algebra I, in this unit students will learn and practice both old and new skills to plot, identify and compute x- and y-intercept. They will also use methods they have learned to graph lines and solve inequalities. They will use different information and methods to calculate x- and y-intercepts. The students will have several opportunities to demonstrate and practice these skills. For a final project, in a real life experiment, they will be using chirping crickets and measure the rate of chirps to calculate the slope to graph a linear equation.

Assessment Plan: Entry-Level: Background knowledge: Warm-up, brainstorm discussion/exercise while coming up with linear equations in the real world. Formative: Multi-media SlideRocket: Graphing a line exercise and posing questions to be answered throughout the presentation. Use their critical thinking and formed knowledge to show that they can come up with hypothetical graphs. Quiz: Fill in the blank and graph a line while able to describe the relationship. Graphic Organizer: Create a comic strip explaining the steps of graphing a linear equation. Multimedia Quizlet: Flashcards practicing vocabulary and definitions. Lesson 1 Student Learning Objective: Graph a linear equation using ordered pairs and plot the xand y-intercept Acceptable Evidence: Plotting a graph on paper and creating a human formation of a line Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Presentation Organization Interaction Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Presentation Organization Interaction Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Presentation Organization
Lesson Activities:

Summative: Group presentation: presentation of real world linear equation using research of real facts. Cricket Problem Experiment & written report: Group experiment with crickets and proving the linear equation relationship between temperature and number cricket chirps.

Students will be given exercises to graph equation on whiteboard and paper. Students will create a human graph to practice and demonstrate knowledge through teamwork. Finally they will collect data from chirping crickets and produce a linear equation on paper.

Lesson 2 Student Learning Objective: Able to use the internet to help student connect algebra problems to the real world. Acceptable Evidence: Answer questions and solve problems with information found online.
Lesson Activities: Student will be given a set of questions to answer regarding an existing linear equation in a Webercise . Second part of lesson consists of student using a couple of websites to research other real world situations which can be explained with help of a linear equation

Lesson 3 Student Learning Objective: Use a graphic organizer to help student be able to understand and explain all the steps in graphing a linear equation. Acceptable Evidence: Able to draw and explain the steps in graphing a linear equation.
Lesson Activities: Student will be given a graphic organizer with 9 spaces to fill up with their own unique comic book story and drawings. Next they will have to read their story and teach someone else in their own words how to graph a linear equation.
