Fever is caused by the invasion of bacteria which enter the bloodstream and trigger an inflammatory response and release of pyrogens, both exogenous from bacteria and endogenous from the body. This causes the hypothalamic thermostat in the brain to be reset higher, resulting in increased body temperature through blood vessel constriction and reduced heat loss, in order to fight off infection, which the body perceives through chills and fever.
