1. Over the course of history what two things have the indigenous relied on that are readily available from Australian forests? (1mk) One thing that the indigenous have relied on is wood from forests. Wood is used to construct many essential items, such as canoes and spears. The indigenous have also relied on forest animals, as they provide food as well as clothing for Aborigines. 2. Name five things the Aborigines have made using trees? (1mk) Using trees, Aborigines have made canoes, spears, boomerangs, didgeridoos and shields. 3. How did European settlers make use of Australian timber in the late 18th century? (2mks) The Europeans used timber, as it was the most readily available material at the time. It was used to create the foundations of the new colony, mainly buildings. 4. Early on why did the Europeans find it so exhausting to harvest timber? (2mk) Trees were harvested from native forests by axes and hand-operated saws. It required hard manual labour. Sawmills were located in forests and the logs had to be transported over long distances and difficult terrain. 5. What social impact did the roadways in forest areas have? (2mks) Roadways in forest areas made families of loggers and millers no longer needed to live in remote locations, but instead could live in townships close to hospitals, schools and other amenities. 6. How did the type of circular saw used to cut logs affect a sawmills productivity? (2mks) A sawmill that used circular saws would produce between 14 and 23 cubic metres per day. Therefore it enhances the production rate of a sawmill.
