The Colonies
We, the United States, were still loyal to the British Crown even after many disputes. We had just fought a long war, The French and Indian War, that left England paying for massive troop movements in the Americas. Britain thought it was only fair to seek compensation for protecting the colonies through raising taxes.

American Assets
Millions of untapped natural resources. Cheap labor to harvest resources. Exporting the resources was providing England with plenty of materials that they would then sell for prot. Tough people that did not know the word Quit!

Death...and taxes
In 1765 Parliament passed the Stamp Act. You had to pay a direct tax to have a stamp placed on any document. We boycotted English goods in protest and the next year the tax was dropped.

Who drinks hot tea???

British try another tax on tea. Samuel Adams, and the Sons of Liberty organized the Boston Tea Party. We trashed their tea, and the British moved to occupy the city.

Oh yea? We will make our own country...

After Boston was occupied we moved to show solidarity by forming the 1st Continental Congress. The King showed almost no consideration for the congresss decisions. On April 19, 1775 ghting broke out between British soldiers and American militiamen. The Shot heard round the World was red.

Game On!!!!
The 2nd Continental Congress was in session when ghting broke out. They immediately decided to raise an army under George Washington. The Revolution had begun.

Thomas Big Daddy Jefferson

Used Lockes basic ideas of human rights. Drafted the Declaration of Independence in July 1776... Declared all ties between Britain and the colonies were dissolved. Gave George III a list of why we were leaving.

Farmers vs Professional Soldiers

We got the living crap kicked out of us. Weaker men would have quit...we attacked the British at midnight...on Christmas morning. British generals were far better equipped for war, and took many key cities.

Lafayette, We are here.

Americans had been waiting on support from France. Finally, when France realized we had a shot, they intervened. French reinforcments, naval and ground forces, overwhelmed the British. British forces were forced into surrender at Yorktown. In 1781 the Americans had successfully revolted against the British.

The Republic
The Articles of Confederation established a very weak national government. It consisted of Congress...and that is it. It was ineffective at governing an entire nation. Needed more power to control and enforce regulations on states.

The Federal System

A more powerful national government. Operated with checks and balances between the branches of government. Divided power between the national and state governments. The question was...which one should be more powerful.

Drafting the Constitution

The Constitutional Convention met in February 1787. They began working on the U.S. Constitution. They signed the new legislation in September 1787. However, it still had to be approved by 9/13 states to become law. Federalists and Antifederalists argued over the power given to the national government.

Compromising while also creating a model for the World

The Constitution was signed into law, and to gain support from Antifederalists the Bill of Rights was added. It protected peoples individual liberties, and gave all powers not explicitly stated in the Constitution back to the people. Ever since the world has been proting.
