Dear Ms Jyoti Bachani

Report: Course Evaluation, to the Teachers

Dear Ms Bachani, This PDF file contains the compiled results of the course evaluations for your class GMAN 712 01 Global Business Strategy. As in the past, the value 5 represents "Strongly Agree" while the value 1 represents "Strongly Disagree." Please be aware that the software calculates standard deviation information, but in a sample size as small as a typical Saint Mary's class, the information provided by standard deviation figures may not have the validity necessary to be useful to you for any one class or semester. The standard deviation figures for the cumulative results of department/program and for the whole College are more pertinent. For some of the quantitative items you may notice that the total number of responses is lower than for others. In these cases either a student did not mark the form or marked it in a way that the scanner could not pick up. At the end of the file are the written comments, if any. The software allows a range of Salutations, including "Mr./Mrs./Ms." and also "Br./Fr./Sr./Rabbi," based on the data entered by the Registrar when courses are set up for a given academic term. If the salutation is not correct, let contact Jan Jones (undergraduate courses), Edy Bizot (KOE courses), or Drew Ungs (Graduate Business) if you would like your salutation changed. The hard copies of the original evaluations for undergraduate courses will be kept in the Office of Academic Affairs if you wish to consult them. The original evaluations for graduate courses will be kept in the appropriate office. Consult your Program Director.

Comments Report

4. WRITTEN COMMENTS: Please assist the instructor and the program by adding written comments in the appropriate boxes below each question.
4.1)

In what ways was this instructor particularly effective? In what ways could this instructor improve his/her teaching? Dr. Bachani gave ample time during class for teams to work on Capsim simulations. Having the opportunity to sit through multiple rounds in one day allowed for significant learning and I'd encourage doing even more of this if possible. There were a few moments during day 1's lecture when Dr. Bachani asked the class to read the slides. She would then advance the slides after a suitable period of time. I would have preferred that she provide the slides ahead of time, speak to key points during lecture, and then use any extra time to allow the teams to continue working on their Capsim analyses. Dr. Bachani has a wealth of knowledge and she communicates very clearly and effectively. The CAPSIM simulation was very relevant and fun but I would actually prefer to hear more from Dr. Bachani on real life examples on companies' strategies. I wished that we could tapped into her experience and knowledge more that way. Enjoyed using the Capstone simulation. I really like the game, I think it drove home ideas about how effective strategy really is to individuals and organizations. I thoroughly enjoyed learning from Dr. Bachani. The simulations employed in class was a highly effective tool for learning and drove home the lessons that strategy alignment is both vertical and horizontal. I had a great deal of fun learning how to form and execute a strategy from my instructor and from my classmates. Mostly using Capsim wasnt the most effective use of time. We should have had more case studies & examples of what worked & what didnt in real life examples. Since the class is all about global strategy, we should focus on global strategy examples - I felt most examples were just focused on India. Sharing her experiences analyzing the world leaders and their successful strategies. She has a very hands on approach. With her wide industry experience, the class material was relevant. She accesses class level and individual levels and was very supportive of learnings per individual basis. The professor was particularly effective in her teaching style and knowledge of the subject. I'd suggest two areas for improvement. The lack of recent real-world experience led to a bit of a disconnect between the instruction on real-world decisions with an academic mindset. A greater focus on one method or the other would have been a better method of teaching as it would have been consistent. Additionally, the hands-off approach to the Capsim program was challenging as there was little support in-class. Calling the helpline was an option, however not preferred for myself and many of my colleagues. The simulation was absolutely a great learning tool. This has been one of the best classes so far in applying our knowledge to real life scenarios which is the basis of why most of us our here. capsim method allows learning by trying. There could be more information provided on capsim for the students to be effective. The tools need to work on a mac properly. effective enough for me to take another course, perhaps more time should have been assigned for contemporary case studies

4.2)

Would you take another course from this instructor? Would you recommend this instructor to a friend? Please explain. Absolutely to both questions. It was a very enjoyable learning experience. Dr. Bachani is an excellent teacher who is clearly passionate about what she teaches. Absolutely, this was a class of learning and takeaways. i felt as i learned a great deal and would recommend this class to anyone. Absolutely. Dr. Bachani had a wealth of information about the strategy and particularly it's application in developing countries. Absolutely. Great learning experience. The class focused on various managerial aspect and provided me with comprehensive learning. Dr Jyoti was very clear in her communication. But I felt that the course could have moved in a more structured way. I would definitely take another course from Dr. Bachani and recommend her to a friend. She is a great professor and extremely knowledgeable as mentioned. Wished we had more time to spend with her with more discussions. Yes I would take another course with Dr. Jyoti Bachani and recommend her as an instructor. She brings wealth of knowledge in not only the aspect of strategy as well as her perspective of how she views the world and what brings out the best of people Yes!

Yes, I will also pick up a few of the recommended books as well. Yes, Yes, Yes. Yes. Yes. She is very knowledgeable and interesting.
4.3)

What did you particularly like or find useful about this course? What did you dislike or find to be of little value? I have mixed feelings about CAPSIM. I felt that we spent a lot of time in class learning how to use the thing, even with the pre-work assignments already done. Also, strategy as a subject (from what I've experienced at work and what I've read) seemed to be a very different topic from what our CAPSIM exercises involved. My own personal experiences and academic experiences around strategy were aligned with Dr. Bachani's lectures, but not so much with CAPSIM. I like the game, but I found that many people had not fully taken time to understand the over all idea of how to play, what the key takeaways were and what to do during the rounds which resulted in a loss of learning/ low level of final end products which are not being up to standers. Learning how to execute strategy using Capstone. See above The CAPSIM simulation was a very effective teaching tool. The Capsim simulations were extremely helpful. The course was designed well. Very helpful in structuring the mindset towards strategy. I would have prefered couple rounds of capsim outside classroom, so we could take advantage of her in-depth experience. At the same time, It was also good learning experience from other teams. The simulation was unique and useful in context. But at the same time, I feel that it was eating into our class time and with a 4-day schedule it might not have worked as well as a longer course. But all in all I think the simulation was useful and thanks to Dr. Bachani's great examples and lectures the class was very interesting and I learned a lot. Understanding of how to put together a strategy and present it effectively to senior management. The analysis and tools to back up your recommendation. her personal views and stories

4.4)

Please make specific suggestions that you feel would improve the course. I appreciated the time that was given in class to complete the CAPSIM rounds but I think that can be shortened. I don't think the class nor Dr. Bachani were particularly receptive to having prospective students drop in on us unannounced on Saturday. Although our class is accustomed to these visits, it seemed that Dr. Bachani was unaware and tried to accommodate by readjusting the order of parts of her lecture for the visitors. This, in turn, threw off our schedule and forced us to stay later than we had anticipated on Saturday evening. This wasn't exactly a welcome prospect, given that we still had other work to do for the class. Given that we regularly pull late nights or all-nighters to keep up with this program (particularly on the weekends that we're here), I didn't feel that this disruption was especially beneficial for us. Further, we had a surprise visit during our Saturday night professor dinner from another prospective student. Personally, I like to use this time to unwind with fellow students, rather than have to entertain a prospective student. Soservman projects cause a stress in the learning project in the way that they are structured and the night of presentation. it would be best to present these projects on Wednesday or Thursday night so as to allow for a more stress free environment. The two points above, if considered, would help improve this course. perhaps more practice time on the CAPSIM course and better knowledge base.
