zomuzo is a Japanese phrase which means riff-raff, or rabble. Under this monicker, the Uzomuzo crew is an international group of artists that meet in Nagoya, Japan to collaborate on comics and sequential art. The group includes professional Japanese manga-ka, designers, motion graphics producers, art instructors and graffiti writers. The intent is to mix these various styles and skill sets through improvisation and collaboration. Uzomuzo meets once a week at Manga-kukan - a wonderful space in downtown Nagoya where people can use their drawing tables, light boxes, nib pens, brushes and screen tones to work on their own work. Many professionals and amateurs alike use the space to draw and talk with other cartoonists. There are also workshops and lectures for all ranges of abilities, taught by industry professionals. Uzomuzo publishes their weekly jams on their website: http://uzomuzo.net The group is open to anyone, and we welcome people to drop in and draw with us, or to become a regular member. English and Japanese are both welcome!

Uzomuzo is an experimental comix collective based in Nagoya, Japan. The members gather once a week to draw inprovisational, collaborative jam comics, similar to the jam sessions of jazz music. Artists from all different backgrounds such as design, illustration or grafitti work together to make comics without restrictions or limitations. Often times jams will have themes or challenges - for example drawing comics in reverse order, or reinventing pop culture characters. To see more work from Uzomuzo, please check-out uzomuzo.net

twelve hour comics

The following comics were created as part of a 12 hour drawing challenge. The Uzomuzo crew spent the night in a manga cafe in Nagoya in an attempt to write, draw, ink and letter 12 pages of comics in 12 hours. The purpose of the excercise is to focus on certain aspects of cartooning and refine story telling and drafting techniques. such as brevity and simplicity of the story, economy of lines and so on. When reading these stories please bear in mind that the story and art were concieved and executed entirely in one day Sort of like the haiku of comics. In addition, the subject for each story was chosen randomly from a book of quotes.

JAMS
Jam comics combine elements of Jazz music such as improvisation and collaboration. Inspired by jam sessions between musicians, cartoonists jam by collaborating on a single piece. Much like jazz music, the spontaneity, mixing of styles and collaborative process creates a unique, one time artwork that one person could never concieve on their own. Jam comics employ their own aesthetic, so when reading these jams please try to consider each panel one by one and the flow of panels and evolution of the story as a process. The way one person interprets anothers art is the fun part.

kickstarter
This book would not have been possible without the generous support of the kickstarter community. We decided to invite some of our backers into the creative process of this book. Backers who pledged above a certain level were invited to create their own story or premise which we then interpreted our own way. We were so impressed by the humor and creativity of our backers. We hope to continue this new and exciting way of interacting directly with the audience of the book creatively. It was extremely rewarding for us artisically and intellectually - hopefully for the readers as well.
