Directions: Complete the following and turn in on the first day of class.

Assignment #1
Watch the movie The Truman Show (PG). This movie will help you understand the story. After watching the movie, answer the following question in half a page to a page of writing: What was the truth about Truman Burbanks life? How did he react as he found this out? What were his emotions? Was he happy, sad, confused, or something else? Give examples to back up your opinion.

Assignment #2
Read The Allegory of the Cave. I put some of the important parts in italics. Dont worry if you do not understand it right away because this is a story that is not even fully understood by professors of philosophy, but give it a try! As you read, please take marginalia or annotation. Try to answer the questions about it as you go. This is a picture of the cave included in the packet.

Assignment #3
Write one paragraph about how The Allegory of the Cave relates to The Truman Show. You can put this paragraph on the same page as Assignment #1.

Assignment #4
Read the summaries of some of the major units in the course and take marginalia or annotation as you go. These will be collected on the first day.

Optional Assignment:
Watch the movie The Matrix (R). This movie is rated R, so please get permission from your family before watching the movie. If you do watch it, write a short response (5-8 sentences) on what it has in common with The Truman Show.
