Choosing the right engine for your Hov Pod
Hov Pod can be configured with various engines to suit different uses, so this help sheet explains how to configure and
choose the best engine to suit your purpose. So why so much choice?
Engines come in two types, 2 stroke and 4 stroke, petrol / gasoline. Currently we do not sell or expect to sell Diesel,
they are considered too heavy for our application.
The first thing to understand about small hovercraft is that they are weight dependent, so our designers
have to design the Hov Pod to be as light as possible.
So on the one hand, lightweight construction is good. But on the other hand, lightweight construction
can compromise durability, if we make the craft too thin for example. So the Hov Pod is made from
HDPE, (High Density Polyethylene) which is lightweight and strong.
2 stroke microlight engines such as the Rotax 503 52HP and Rotax 582 65HP are ideal for the Hov Pod, as they are
lightweight, offer highpowertoweight performance, and because they are aviation engines, they are very reliable and
easy to maintain.
4 stroke engines are heavier than 2 stroke engines, but they are cleaner, and more fuelefficient.
4 stroke engines are generally larger and heavier than 2 stroke engines, so therefore need to have more power to
compensate for the weight they add to the craft.
A larger engine will not necessarily provide faster performance, the main advantage they provide is lifting capacity for
onwater starting, to overcome the bow wave hovercraft make when starting from an onwater position (getting over
hump is the expression to describe this problem).
As you do not make a bow wave on land, a more powerful engine is not so important for on land use.

Comparing 2 stroke and 4 stroke engines
2 stroke engine 4 stroke engine
Lightweight so ideal for hovercraft Heavier so need more power to compensate for added weight
Less fuel efficient More fuel efficient, so cheaper to run, longer operating range per
tank of fuel.
Could generate more noise Should be less noisy
Burns 2 stroke oil at rate of 501 Burns no oil in fuel
Not as clean in operation compared to 4 stroke Cleaner operation than 2 stroke
