Lecture 1- Mitosis & Meiosis

Mitosis
a specific phase of normal cell division.

Mitosis
cells reproduce by duplicating their contents and dividing in two.
u nicellular organisms (bacteria, yeast) each cell division produces a new organism. multicellular organisms require many rounds of cell division. required in adult to replace cells lost through wear & tear or programmed cell death.
adult humans many millions of cells each second.

Meiosis
generation of sex cells, sperm & ovum. 1/2 the number of chromosomes.

Mitosis
produce a pair of genetically identical daughter cells.
DNA replicated chromosomes segregated into each cell cytoplasm and organelles must replicate and divide.

Interphase

Controlled by proteins conserved from yeast to humans.
