names,” a Chinese proverb
teaches. Widsom has never been
one of ex-president Joseph
Estrada’s strengths. But he in-
sists on being called by what he
claims is his right name.
“My name is not bigote (mus-
tache),” the bearded Estrada told
the Inquirer. “It is Erap. People
call me Erap.”
That outburst came after fu-
gitive and ex-cop Cezar Mancao
pinpointed Bigote as the “mas-
termind” in the Cavite rubout of
publicist Salvador “Bubby”

again another season of Lent. It’s
a yearly liturgical period that in-
vites us all to prepare for the most
important event in Church life —
the Easter mystery, the passion,
death and resurrection of our
Lord.
For this year, Pope Benedict
already has given out his Lenten
message that focuses on the
ascetical practice of fasting. I be-
lieve that it’s worthwhile to go
through that message to savor
fasting’s unfading relevance in
our life.
It’s certainly a time-honored
practice that has deep roots in
the Bible and in Church tradi-
tion. Together with prayer and
almsgiving, fasting is the usual
pious tool to transform our
heart, detaching it from itself so
it can give itself totally to God
and to others, as we are meant
to be.
It’s a pity that this duty is fast
disappearing in the minds of
many people. It’s as if it’s already
extinct, and the only remaining
value it has is that of a relic of
the past, fit for museums, but

not anymore in our present en-
vironment.
We can never overemphasize
the need for fasting. In fact, it
should be an abiding practice,
and not just a Lenten thing.
Given our wounded human con-
dition, fasting offers a continu-
ing corrective to our ever un-
stable state of being.
Our tendency, constantly fed
by our own weaknesses and the
many, endless temptations
around us, is to be self-absorbed,
to such an extent that we don’t
even realize we are in that kind
of predicament.
We have to understand that
this anomaly is highly toxic to us.
We are meant to fill our mind and
heart with God and others, with
thoughts and desires of goodness
for others in all its forms.
We slacken in this business,
and we sooner or later get into
trouble. Our own weaknesses
start to dominate us, and the
temptations around become irre-
sistible.

have, big or small, to keep a civil
and decent appearance outside

A name, the dictionary tells
us, is “a word or phrase that con-
stitutes the distinctive designa-
tion of a person or thing”. It’s in

“William Saunders” and
“Jane Ryan” were aliases that

no other way for us to go but to

We have to be wary of the il-
lusion of shutting God and oth-
ers out of our mind. We can be
thrilled by our own ideas and de-
sires only, but sooner or later,
without God and others, this
bubble will explode, and we’ll ex-
posed to the abject reality of our
nothingness without God.
In his Lenten message, the
Pope traces the origin and basis
of fasting, and how it has devel-
oped since. I think it is a knowl-
edge that plays a crucial role in
our understanding and apprecia-
tion of fasting.
The Pope said that the origi-
nal divine indication on fasting
was when God told our first par-
ents not to eat of the fruit of the
tree of the knowledge of good and
evil. They can eat anything in
Paradise, except that.
And the reason is quite simple
— eating that fruit would lead

self in it from first to last, except

Diabetes: The silent epidemic
WHAT one thing do these people
have in common: Yuri Andropov,
James Cagney, Francois Duvalier,
Thomas Edison, Ernest Heming-
way, Charles Ives, George Lucas,

Spencer Tracy, and H.G. Wells?
They are some of the world’s
famous diabetics. From the Phil-
ippines, you can add to the for-
midable list the following noted
personalities: singer Gary
Valenciano, entertainer Subas
Herrero and former senator
Juan Flavier.
Although a non-communi-
cable disease, diabetes is spread-
ing swiftly. In the last two de-
cades, the number of people
around the world suffering from
diabetes has skyrocketed from 30
million to more than 230 million,
which is almost 6 percent of the
world’s adult population!
In the past, diabetes was
touted to be a “disease of afflu-
ence.” But today, such is not the
case anymore. Diabetes now
spares no one: rich and poor. Dr.
Paul Zimmet, director of the In-
ternational Diabetes Institute in
Victoria, Australia, predicts that
diabetes “is going to be the big-
gest epidemic in human history.”
In the Philippines, some 500
Filipinos are being diagnosed
with diabetes every day. Cur-
rently, about three million people
have this condition, according to
Dr. Francisco Pasaporte, presi-
dent of the Philippine Associa-
tion of Diabetes Educators.
Unknowingly, 50 percent of
Filipinos suffering from the dis-
ease do not know they have it.
“Many of the patients die be-
cause it is already too late to rem-
edy the situation,” laments Dr.
Ricardo Fernando, of the Insti-
tute for Studies and Diabetes
Foundation.
This is especially true among
children. A doctor, after all, can-
not tell a child is diabetic until

Global warming and financial meltdown
GLOBAL warming and the ongo-
ing financial meltdown appear to
have one common culprit, and
that is the greed of people ex-
pressed in so many ways. In the
case of global warming, it is the
greed of companies to produce
more profits without caring about
the carbon footprints that they
are also producing. In the case of
the financial meltdown, it is the
greed of companies to earn more
from higher gains in the sub-
prime markets, even if the risks
are actually higher compared to
the prime markets.
Filipino scientist Dr. Roger
Birosel says that the black car-
bon coming from Europe is set-
tling down in the North Pole, and
it is now causing ice caps and ice-
bergs there to warm up and melt
down. As a result, melted water
is now melting downwards south-
bound, causing ocean water lev-
els to rise along the way. It is also
causing polar bears to die as they
are unable to swim to safety. Add-
ing to the destruction, they are
now eating their own cubs as food
sources dwindle along the way.
Dr. Birosel says that there is
no way to stop the polar melt-
down, but as a defense mecha-
nism countries along the way
could still resort to adaptation,
citing the experience of the Neth-
erlands as they learned to per-
petually pump out the water in

the child starts to complain. If
discovered, it is already late as
far as complications are con-
cerned.
Dr. Lorna Abad, president of
the Philippine Society of Pediat-
ric Metabolism and Endocrinol-
ogy, estimated that around eight
percent of the country’s children
could be diabetic.
“That’s high,” she said, point-
ing out that 10 years ago the es-
timate was just two to three per-
cent.
“Diabetes has no cure,” Dr.
Fernando says. “What doctors
can do is just minimize the com-
plications or push its onset a
little later because the disease is
more manageable among older
people.”
The eighth leading cause of
death in the Philippines, diabe-
tes mellitus (its complete name)
is a chronic, debilitating and of-
ten deadly disease that affects
how the body turns food into en-
ergy.
Normally, the food we eat is
converted into glucose and used
or stored by the body with little
problems. Circulating insulin
hormone stimulates the uptake
of sugar by the body’s cells. But
with diabetes something goes
awry. The pancreas, which is the
organ responsible for producing
insulin, becomes irresponsible.
Diabetes strikes in two forms.
In the less common Type 1, the
body does not make enough in-
sulin and generally afflicts chil-
dren and adolescents. Type 2 dia-
betes are either unable to pro-
duce enough insulin, or, if they
do churn out enough, are unable
to process and utilize it properly.
The latter type is much more
widespread and most often
strikes in adulthood.
Like most diseases, it has
symptoms. Among the common
signs of diabetes are excessive

most of their land areas that were
actually below sea levels to begin
with.
According to Birosel, adapta-
tion or mitigation could take the
form of planting more mangroves
along the water ways, and plant-
ing more trees in the forests,
which would give the dual advan-
tage of producing oxygen and
strengthening the water holding
capability of mountain ranges.
The key according to him is envi-
ronmental balance, a goal that is
still achievable if only we could
work together to make it happen.
According to Ms. Lory Tan of
the World Wildlife Foundation
(WWF), the Philippines was
number one in the entire planet
in supporting the “Earth Hour”
last Saturday. She said that out
of the 3,919 towns and cities that
supported the event, 642 are from
the Philippines. How I wish that
all these 642 places could also
support all other environmental
projects as well, because the war
against global warming is more
than just energy savings.
I got a good response from the
Rotary Club of Intramuros (RCI)
when I presented to them the eco-
forest approach of fighting the
twin evils of global warming and
local poverty. Of course, local pov-
erty has always existed long be-

Having faith in God
WE all know that there is a one, true God but in
the world we live in now that belief is becoming a
fantasy. This keeps happening because of evi-
dences relating to science that contradicts some
religious facts like if there is really a Jesus Christ.
So, many people are falling into the pitfalls of dis-
belief and the result is that atheists are increas-
ing in number. Well, some are now confused if
there is really a God or it is just a mere belief so
many are thinking if those that they worshipped
exists at all. But just have faith. Who knows?
Maybe you’ll be rewarded. A story that follows
applies to have faith in Him.
A Christian scholar who held the Bible to be
literally true was once accosted by a scientist who
said, “According to the Bible, the earth was made
five thousand years ago. But we have discovered
bones that point to life on earth a million years
ago.”
Then came the answer: “When God created
earth five thousand years ago, he deliberately put
those bones in to test our faith and see if we would
believe his Word rather than scientific evidence.”

ito. Sa ilalim ng mga umiiral na batas
na may kinalaman sa mga pagka-
kamali sa middle name, maliwanag
na kailangang magsampa ng kaso ang
isang interesadong partido sa ating
mga hukuman. Ito ang siyang naka-
saad sa Revised Rules of Court.
Ayon sa batas na ito, ang kasong
isasampa sa hukuman upang mapa-
litan ang maling middle name ay
tatawaging “petition for correction of
entry in the civil registry”, at ang
hukumang pagsasampahan nito ay
ang Regional Trial Court sa lugar
kung saan nandodoon ang Local Civil
Registry na nag-iingat ng kopya ng
birth certificate na may pagkakamali
sa middle name. Kailangang maipa-
diyaryo ang kasong ito nang minsan
sa isang linggo ng tatlong sunod-
sunod na linggo.
Hindi pupuwede ang Republic Act
9048, o ang clerical error law, sa

ating bayan, maliwanag na ang isang
kasong kriminal ay hindi maaaring
aregluhin ng magkabilang panig.
Nanatiling buhay ang isang ka-
song kriminal, kahit na nagka-
aregluhan na ang mga nasasangkot
sa kaso, sapagkat itinuturing ng
batas na ang tunay na nasaktan o
nabigyang pinsala sa isang pagka-
kagawa ng krimen ay ang bayan
mismo, hindi ang taong nasaktan.
Kaya nga ang titulo ng lahat ng
kasong kriminal ay nag-uumpisa sa
mga katagang “People of the Philip-
pines”, sapagkat ang pamayanan ang
totoo at tunay na napinsala dahil sa
pagkakagawa ng krimen.
Dahil diyan, kahit iniurong na ng
nagrereklamo ang kaso, kung hindi
ito pinapayagan ng hukuman at ng
piskal o prosecutor, tuloy pa rin ito.
At dahil tuloy pa rin ang isang
kasong kriminal na naareglo na ng
magkabilang panig, ang mga proseso
sa kaso ay tuloy din, katulad ng pag-
papalabas ng warrant of arrest sa
akusado, at ang pagpipiyansa ng
akusado upang siya ay papayagang
pansamantalang makalaya habang
nililitis ang usapin.
Kailangan pa din ng akusadong
magpiyansa kahit nagka-aregluhan
na sa kaso, sapagkat kung hindi siya
magpipiyansa maaari pa rin siyang
makulong.
Anyway, ang isang taktika kapag
nagka-aregluhan na sa kasong kri-
minal ay ang pagpapatuloy ng pagli-
litis pero hindi na sisipot ang nag-
rereklamo.
Kung makakatatlo o higit pang
hearing sa kaso at hindi sumisipot
ang nagrereklamo, maaari nang
humiling ang inerereklamo ng pag-
papa-dismiss ng usapin.
Ang magiging batayan ng kahi-
lingang ito ay ang lilitaw na paglabag
sa kanyang karapatan upang maging
mabilis ang paglilitis o Constitutional
right to speedy trial o speedy disposi-
tion of cases.

Banal na Bundok: Kublihan noon, dalanginan ngayon

SAN MIGUEL, Bulacan — Min-
san itong naging bahagi ng
kublihan ng mga rebolusyu-
naryong Pilipino mahigit 100
taon na ang nakakaraan, ngunit
ngayon, itinuturing itong lugar
ng dalanginan at tinawag na
Banal na Bundok.
Ang Banal na Bundok ay
bahagi ng anim na ektaryang
lupain na pag-aari ni Mayor
Roderick Tiongson ng bayang ito
na siyang nagpapagawa ng mga
istraktura sa nasabing lugar
bilang paghahanda sa pagbu-
bukas nito sa publiko sa darating
na Lunes Santo, Abril 6.
Ito ay isang burol na may taas
na mahigit 100 piye na matatag-
puan sa paanan ng kabundukan
ng Biak-na-Bato National Park
sa Sitio Balingkupang, Barangay
Biak-na-Bato sa silangang baha-
gi ng bayang ito.
Sa paanan ng Banal na Bun-
dok may mga malapad na parang
na maaaring paradahan ng mga
sasakyan at ang ibang bahagi
nito ay maaari ring pagtayuan
ng mga tolda ng mga nais mana-
tili doon ng magdamag sa pana-
hon ng paggunita sa Mahal na
Araw.
Mula sa paradahan ay mata-
tanaw ang 25-talampakang krus
sa tuktok ng Banal na Bundok
katabi ang isang adoration cha-
pel.
Konkretong hagdanan
Madaling akyatin ang tuktok
dahil sa may konkretong hag-
danan na may gabay na ang gilid
ay natataniman ng mga hala-
mang namumulaklak at mga
palmera bukod pa sa mga lara-
wang nakakuwadro na nagpa-
pakita ng mga pangyayari sa
tinaguriang mga istasyon sa krus
ng Panginoong Hesus.
Sa ibaba ng hagdan may mga
rebulto at kandelario na maa-
aring pagtusukan ng kandila
habang nananalangin.
Kamangha-mangha naman
ang mga tanawin mula sa tuktok
ng Banal na Bundok.
Sa bandang hilaga ay parang
pinapayungan ng mga ulap ang
Bundok ng Arayat sa Pampanga.
Ito ang nag-iisang bundok sa
kalagitnaan ng kapatagan ng
Gitnang Luzon.
Sa bandang silangan ay ma-
tatanaw ang matatarik na ka-
bundukan ng Biak-Na-Bato na
mayaman sa likas na yaman
tulad ng miniminang mama-
haling tea rose marble.
Sa gawing timog ng Bundok
na Banal ay matatanaw ang
kabundukan pa rin ng Biak-Na-
Bato National Park, ngunit ang
katangi-tanging tanawin dito ay
ang hugis ng Kristong Nakahiga
na nasa tuktok ng kabundukan.
Sa bandang kanluran matata-
naw ang luntiang kabukiran ng
San Ildefonso, San Rafael at iba
pang bayan ng lalawigan.
Ayon kay Mayor Tiongson,
ang Banal na Bundok ay isang
pahingahan lamang niya noong
dekada ’90.
Ngunit noong 1999 ay nag-
simula siyang makakita ng mga
pangitain doon habang siya ay
nagmumuni-muni.
“Nagulat ako nang makakita
ako ng libo-libong agila na lu-
milipad sa tapat ng Banal na
Bundok, pagkatapos ay bigla
silang nawala sa ulap,” ani
Tiongson nang makapanayam
ng Mabuhay noong Marso 17.
Higanteng agila
Ang karanasang ito ay na-
sundan pa noong 2002 at 2005,
kung kailan muli siyang naka-
kita ng higanteng agila, at libo-
libong agila ayon sa pagkaka-
sunod.
Mula 2006 ay nagsimulang
dayuhin ng mga tao ang Banal
na Bundok sa panahon ng Se-
mana Santa.
Dahil dito, sinimulan ni
Tiongson ang pagsasaayos ng
nasabing lugar noong nakaraang
taon.
Pinalaparan at ipinapatag
niya ang kalsadang papasok sa
Banal na Bundok at nagpatayo
siya ng krus sa tuktok nito.
Nagpalagay din siya ng mga
rebulto sa paanan nito para sa
nais manalangin.
Ayon kay Rodrigo Florencio,
tourism officer ng bayang ito,
ang Banal na Bundok ay nagsil-
bing kanlungan ng mga armas
ng mga rebolusyunaryo sa pana-
hon ng digmaan sa pagitan ng
mga Kastila at Pilipino mahigit
100 taon na ang nakakaraan.
Ito ay dahil sa may apat na
kuweba sa silangang bahagi ng
bundok.
Isa sa mga nasabing kuweba
ay pansamantala ring ginamit na
pagamutan ng mga rebolusyu-
naryo sa panahon ng digmaan.
