As an educational leader, what principles of leadership and organization do you draw upon as you develop and implement a vision

for learning, positive school culture, and community relations? The most important aspect of a leaders work in education is maintaining the focus on what is best for the learners. As the ISLLC Standards reiterate, an effective leader continually promotes the success of every student ("Educational leadership policy," 2007). This guiding principle dictates that a leader has an understanding of the unique needs of learners, a caring attitude toward the families and backgrounds of students, a working knowledge of educational standards, a collaborative view of organizational decision-making, and a healthy appreciation for other teachers and administrators. I will bring this attitude to an organization. My vision for learning is founded in a genuine love for learning and a driving passion to fortify the education provided to children. Success for all students means understanding their distinctive learning styles and skill sets. In my classroom work as well as my work as a leader, I have gained valuable experience with English Language Learners, a compassionate insight into cultural factors, and effective strategies for delivering differentiated instruction. Embracing the unique qualities of students, parents, teachers, and community members, I will contribute to the success of all learners and add positively to the school culture. My love for learning, commitment to education, and positive attitude towards any challenge will accompany me in professional endeavors. Getting along with diverse groups of people is one of my strengths, and, to the benefit of the students, I will bring this asset to an organization. As a teacher and a leader I will promote collegiality, knowing that when we work together our practices improve and our students benefit.

These guiding principles have grown out of a variety of work and personal experiences. Living abroad has had a major impact on my outlook towards all things, as I have faced the daily challenges of being different and functioning among the unknown. Working in corporate finance has influenced my perspective, as I use data analysis to understand student performance and drive decisions. Completing teacher certification as a second career has also influenced me, as I have a passion for what I do. Personal accomplishments such as running a marathon have also influenced me, as I understand the hard work required to meet meaningful goals. These experiences influence me each day in supporting the struggling reader, challenging the gifted student, setting goals with colleagues, and expecting all of us to reach for our best. My transition to education from business was a positive change, and completing the Masters of Science in Educational Leadership program at the University of New England has been icing on the cake. To a leadership role in education I bring a very practical foundation of research-based principles and fundamental theories of education secured from my work with UNE. This program provided focused collaboration with other teacher leaders, enhancing my teaching and leading skills as well as keeping me current on topics in U.S. education. As an expatriate, this collegiality and focus on the application of contemporary models resulted in important professional development. The program has given me a strong understanding of leadership principles, practice with the application of current technology, reflective insight into my strengths and weaknesses as a teacher and leader, and confidence in my commitment to make a positive contribution to our world through education.
