What is a propaganda poster


Propaganda: A form of communication aimed towards influencing the
attitude of the community toward some cause or position by presenting only one side of an argument. It is influential, selective and emotional. Used to further a political, religious or commercial agenda.

Poster: Any piece of printed paper which includes both textual and
graphic elements, designed to be eye-catching and informative, often used to communicate a message.

Propaganda Poster: Reached the height of its importance as a


communications medium during World War 1 (1914-18). Printing techniques had advanced rapidly, these provided visual persuasion. Armies had to be recruited and public morale boosted to maintain support for the war effort.

Jigsaw Activity
History, Artist, Visuals... let's form into groups -students arrange into 1, 2, 3, 3, 2, 1 numbering -groups number by corresponding jigsaw part -students work in groups on worksheets and answer questions -groups renumber themselves A, B, C -students share the knowledge they know with other members of the group -group decides what the key points are -group decides importance of lesson -group decides how it relates to them -groups choose a representative and present their decisions to class -class comes together -group representative reports to class

Create your own propaganda poster

Directions: This is a group project. You will be working in your fnal groups to create your own propaganda poster. Think of a signifcant topic relevant to your background that you feel strongly about and choose a side, are you for it or against it? Then work together to utilize graphic tools such as: text, color, images, clip art, drawings or any other graphic media you can think of and create your own propaganda poster to present in class. Make sure you keep in mind the key terms regarding a propaganda poster and apply them to your own.

Investigate both sides of your argument

Directions: Now that you have created your own propaganda posters and have taken a stance on an important issue, you will investigate the opposing view as well. Work in your groups to investigate the topic using both print and web sources. Your group will then present the research in the form of a written report.
