Chemical Communication System

Endocrine System: Function; secreting hormones which regulate the functions of the body and maintenance of a steady internal environment state Hormones are chemical substances, involved in cell-to-cell communication, that promote the maintenance of homeostasis. Hormones are blood borne substances involved in regulating a variety of process. Hormone (derived from the Greek hormaein, which means to excite or to stir up

The endocrine system forms an important communication system that serves to Regulate, Integrate and Coordinate a variety of different physiological process.

The processes that hormone regulate fall in to four areas:

1. 2. 3. 4. The digestion, utilization and storage of nutrient Growth and development Ion and water balance Reproductive function

The Classical hormones fall into three categories:

Derivatives of the amino acid tyrosine Steroids, which are derivatives of cholesterol Peptides, proteins which comprise the largest and most diverse class of hormones

The same hormone may have different effects on target cells that have

Different receptors for the hormone Different signal transduction pathways Different proteins for carrying out the response
