Methods of Sample Composition Analysis and Structure Identification

Abstract In the present study, the analysis of Co5Zr0.5Y0.5 procured using conventional arc melting methods is investigated. X-ray diffraction studies show that Co5Zr0.5Y0.5 form the hexagonal CaCu5 structure, also show good agreement with sample composition. NAA was used to identify trace amounts of impurities; it too showed an agreement with the known composition. Finally ICPMS was used to give a detailed elemental analysis in which reveals the same results as the other two methods. Comparing and contrasting these non-destructive and destructive methods, The benefits of using a particular method are analyzed based on cost, accuracy, and timeline in which results are needed.
