Alicia Barnes PSYC 3675 Spring 13 Exam 3

Short Answer 1. According to Kalat (2012), Jeffrey Gray believed that the left hemisphere, especially its frontal and temporal lobes describe the behavioral activation system (BAS), marked by low moderate autonomic arousal and a tendency to approach, which could characterize either happiness or anger. People who have greater activity in the left hemisphere tend to be happier, more outgoing and more fun loving. On the flip side increased activity of the frontal and temporal lobes of the right hemisphere is associated with the behavioral inhibition system (BIS), which increases attention and arousal , inhibits action, and stimulates emotions such as fear and disgust. People who experience this tend to be socially withdrawn, less satisfied with life, and are prone to unpleasant emotions (pg. 361). Short Answer 2. The middle ear consists of the tympanic membrane, or ear drum, which connects to three tiny bones called the hammer, anvil and stirrup (Kalat, 2012, pg. 195). Short Answer 3. Nerve deafness, or inner ear deafness results from damage to the cochlea, the hair cells, or the auditory nerve. It can occur at any degree and may be confined to one part of the cochlea, in which case someone hears certain frequencies and not others (Kalat, 2012, pg. 200).

Short Answer 4. We sleep for many reasons. One reason why we sleep is to conserve energy. Sleep conserves energy during insufficient times, when activity would be wasteful and possibly dangerous (Kalat, 2012, pg. 200). Another reason we sleep is to improve memory. When we lack sleep it is hard to remember anything. The last reason we sleep is for memory storage. While we are sleep are minds are putting the things we have learned in particular places to be recalled when needed (Kalat, 2012, pg. 291).
