Disbelief

• Penelope refuses to believe that her


husband, Odysseus, has indeed
returned and is the one who
slaughtered all the suitors
• Even seeing Odysseus with her own
eyes does not change her belief
Problems

• Odysseus has just killed the suitors,


who were the finest princes of Ithaca
• Fresh tunics, Music, and silence
– The bard was told to play wedding
music
– No news of the dead suitors was to be
spread
Tests

• Still in disbelief that the man in front


of her is really Odysseus, Penelope
wishes to test him to be absolutely
sure.
• She then proceeds to want to move
her bridal bed from the bridal room.

Penelope by stating the bed is made
of an olive tree that was where the
home was built and it would take a
god to move it
• Penelope finally accepts Odysseus
and they revel in all the longed-for
joys of love
