Thinking and Language Reflection

How do individuals acquire and develop language? How do you personally communicate your thoughts and how did you learn to do that? Individuals acquire and develop language through stages in life. As an infant, we recognize that some of the language we express produces the desired results we want to achieve. If a baby is hungry and cries, we in turn feed the baby. The baby recognizes this through thinking and develops the language that if I cry, they will know I am hungry. As parents, we also learn the language of different cries from an infant which lets us know what may be wrong. As we get older we develop most of our language skills through education and environmental influence. Culture plays a huge role in how we acquire and develop language skills. This is what most would say we imitate what we see. Based on your own experiences, what are some symbols (e.g., letters of the alphabet) people use to communicate? I have seen many use two fingers up for the symbol of peace as well as the three last fingers with the index finger touching their thumb to represent the word ok. The symbol of with either both hands or one hand out also means to stop. I have also seen when waving your hand means either good bye or hello. While serving in the military, we learned a form of Morris code using knocks to communicate with each other if we were not in the same room. Another symbol I

2 have seen is holding your hand to your ear expressing to the other person that you are not able to hear them. Holding one finger to your lips signals to be quiet. Explain how you think these symbols are related to critical thinking? These symbols are related to critical thinking because they make you think on a deeper level than if the person just said what they meant. Symbols are not the only thing that is related to critical thinking. When we communicate with others and see their reaction, it allows our thoughts to adjust and understand what they are expressing. For example, when someone is grieving, as humans our emotions allow our thoughts to show compassion and understand what they are experiencing. With symbols, signs, expressions, we are able to think and see what the nature of the communication is to us.
