WHAT ARE THE CARE ADVICE FOR LALIQUE ITEMS ?

We advise you to wash your LALIQUE items by hand. As crystal is sensitive to thermic shocks, use warm water with mild soap, at constant temperature and a soft sponge. Do not use metallic pad or a scrapping sponge. Let them drain then dry gently with a non fluffy towel. Regarding the glasses, when drying them, make sure you hold each glass by its parison and not by its foot. By holding the foot of the glass, you could create a torsion and break its leg. Care advice for decanters : avoid letting any wine remain in the decanters and rinse after use with warm water. Let all the humidity evaporate by draining the decanter in an upside down position, introducing absorbing paper in the decanters neck and not putting back the stopper immediately. In there is a white veil in the decanter, pour some cooking salt and a half a litre of vinegar in the decanter, shake and rinse thoroughly with warm water. Care advice for vases : Change the water regularly. You may put aspirin in the water to limit the proliferation of bacteria. Storage : --All crystal glasses or tumblers with a particularly heavy bottom must be set down on their bottom side and not on the drinking side. --Never superpose the glasses --Always lay delicately your crystal items, especially on a hard surface such as metal, marble or steel.

Is crystal dishwasher-safe ?

We advise against the use of the dishwasher recommend you to hand wash your crystal items. The risks of damage caused by the use of the dishwasher depend on how much calcium there is in the water, the water temperature and on how abrasive the powder employed is.

However, if you wish to wash your LALIQUE crystal with the dishwasher, here are a few instructions you should follow : --Select (according to the equipment of your dishwasher) the fragile program, special crystal, at moderate temperature. --Place your items with care and make ensure they are stable and far enough from other items to prevent any shock. --Use preferably liquid detergent or a gel adapted to delicate articles (mention specified on the packing) and avoid compact powders and 2 into 1 pastilles (with integrated salt). Take care to not exceed the amount indicated. --Regulate the distribution of salt in your dishwasher according to the concentration of calcium in the water. --Open the door of the dishwasher as soon as the program is over to prevent the development of steam, which could cause deposits on the parison of your glasses.

My glasses (carafe or vase) lost their transparency. They are covered with white streaks What can I do ? These white streaks certainly result from calcium deposits. You may clean them with a bit of lemon juice or white vinegar diluted in hot water or with some rinsing liquid used in dishwashers. If you wash your LALIQUE crystal glasses with the dishwasher, reduce the salt proportions according to the degree of calcium contained in the water. Please notice that, to preserve the beauty of your glasses, the use of a dishwasher is advised against.

MERCHANDISING

To remove this notice, visit: www.foxitsoftware.com/shopping

A Merchandising Book is at your disposal as a Powerpoint file.

To guide you in preparation for your window displays, the following are the main merchandising principles for a lively and consistent display:

-Present your product by theme: floral, femininity, jungle, birds, boudoir, sea --Present your product in a "pyramidal" way: the presentation can be symmetrical or asymmetrical. The highest piece should be in the middle, the smaller ones on both sides. --Play on volume and height: the highest piece should always be placed in the back of the wall unit and the smaller ones placed in front. Use the blocks to create relief in a dynamic presentation. --The top shelf should always be reserved for large pieces: Horse Head, Rooster, etc..., the large vases or bowls which should be displayed vertically or on a stand. --The bottom shelf should be dedicated to bowls without a stand. Do not display small pieces or vases on this shelf: It would result in confusion. Moreover, the vases are less attractive when seen from above. --Create a rhythm within your presentations: avoid vertically aligning the vases, bowls or groups of products. Therefore, think of alternating the pieces: 1 group of product on a shelf, 2 groups on a second one, followed by only one piece on the third. --Leave space between groups of product thereby, the attention will automatically be focused on them. --Keep in mind that the second shelf from the top and the one which is at eye level are the most attractive: display the best-sellers there.

GLOSSARY CRYSTAL
Annealing : process of cooling the crystal piece after Hot End work, required to stabilise the glass and eliminate all stresses.
Annealing time < 24h: the piece is placed in an annealing oven or lehr where the temperature progressively decreases from 430C to room temperature. . Annealing time > 24h (up to 96 hours): the piece is placed inside a muffle kiln or a bale-out furnace with muffled flames where the temperature is progressively decreased level-by-level until it reaches room temperature.

The finished piece is then placed inside an annealing oven for several hours of progressive cooling. Blowing can be done in moulds made from metal, aluminium, bronze, cast iron, steel or refractory materials, (variant developed by the Romans). These processes require perfect consistency from the gaffer who must make each movement identical to the next, so that the bodies of the glasses form matching sets.
Fixed Mould Blowing: technique, which consists of blowing the piece with a fixed blowpipe. As the glass remains immobile in the mould, designs can be printed on to the glass and it can be shaped other than circular. Designs can be applied by injection onto this blown parison. Turn Mould Blowing: technique, which consists of blowing into the piece while rotating the blowpipe. On a non-decorated piece, this technique ensures that no mould seams are produced. As a result, this technique requires mouth-blowing. Designs can be applied by injection onto this blown parison.

Blowing: glass blowing started around 75-50 B.C. in the Middle East. It consists of blowing air into a molten blob of glass by mouth using a blowpipe, a long hollow tube, in order to create a hollow shape. First, the glassmaker gathers a ball of molten glass from the pot or vessel using the pipe. Then marvering centres the ball on the marver (metallic). After having blown a bubble of air into the glass, the glassmaker blows again to create a parison. The blowing process is repeated followed by successive rounds of refiring to form and develop the body or the final volume of hollow glass required to create the piece. In order to make large pieces air can be blown in using compressed air to supplement the breath of the master glassmakers.

Blowpipe: metal tube, around 1.60m in length, for gathering and blowing crystal.

Body: this is the main part of a vase, bowl or glass; the extreme upper surface of the body is called a rim.

Calcin: see Cullet

Castanets: see Tools

Cleaning: each gathering requires cleaning. This means that each time the molten crystal is gathered, the master glassmakers must verify its purity. Any imperfection is removed from the molten glass by drawing out the glass with shears and then cutting off the drawn out part containing the impurity. Finally, the shaping block is used to give it back its shape. Only crystal that is to be blown is re-fired after cleaning in order to preserve its thermal uniformity.

Cold End: Cutting work on the decoration and surface to produce a satin polished finish on the piece. The added value of LALIQUE pieces lies essentially in this finishing work (see masking, enamelling, polishing, sandblasting, satin finish work, cutting). That is why the factory has 3 Cold End workers for every 1 Hot End worker. Once through Hot End working, the first cold end stage consists of removing all the surface defects and mould seams. Then the worker re-sculpts

the piece so that the decoration exactly matches that of the design drawings. Finally the subtle satin repolishing effects obtained by the contrast between shiny and matte enhance the piece. Cold End work involves extremely delicate procedures that can take up to five days for the most fragile pieces.

Golden red glass: in order to make red crystal, gold is added to the verifiable mixture. Red crystal is the result of a colloidal colouring process. During firing another colour appears and the red colour only appears during the final annealing process. It is then that the colloids, which make the golden red colour, precipitate to create the red colouring.

Cord: defect caused by variations in degrees of refraction and by lack of stability in the crystal.

Cracking-off: stage, which follows hot end work where the upper part, or moil, of the vase or glass is cut away. This stage determines the final shape of the vase or glass and allows the rim to be fined.

Crease(s): surface defect resulting from the way in which the glass, once gathered, moves around within the mould during the injection process, or reacts the pressing. The glass is left with a medium-depth ripple occasionally including trapped air forming a bubble. Creases can be removed by fire polishing or during the cutting process in the Cold End workshops.

Crizzling: a network of cracks, which appear on the surface that may be due to:
An excess of pressure exerted on to the glass that has already solidified during the pressing or injection stages The undercut, during removal from the mould Poor management of mould temperature (for example, a mould that is too cold). Crizzling is particularly difficult to detect on the surface of black glass when hot. That is why Cold End workers are twice as careful, as the piece may be brittle as a result of crizzling. Crizzling can be removed by annealing or cutting in the Cold End workshops. The selection stages ensure that each piece is perfectly formed, without any defects other than those inherent to the manufacturing process.

Coloured crystal: coloured crystal is obtained by adding metallic oxides to the vitrifiable mixture. Coloured crystal is a complex mixture made from a base of white glass to which different metal oxides are added in infinitesimal quantities, such as copper, nickel, chrome, cobalt and manganese or rare earths (neodymium, praseodymium) to obtain all the LALIQUE colours.
Amber glass: a colour that is produced with heat and densifies during annealing. Amber is composed of selenium, which must precipitate in to small particles (or colloids) in order to diffuse the light. Depending on the thickness of the crystal and the annealing time different densities of the amber colour can be produced. Amber-coloured pieces are always annealed once and then a second time, which explains the differing intensities of amber from light yellow to dark amber. Amber-coloured glass always comes out of the furnace with an amber tint which densities when it is placed in the annealing oven. 308 - Divers / Miscellaneous

Crystal: like all glass, crystal is made from sand and potash (silica). However, one component makes it different: lead. As a result it displays superior shine, sonority and weight. Crystal is regulated by a European Standard established in 1971 and standard NFB30-004. A minimum of 24% lead is required in the composition of the crystal and it must have a refraction index greater than 1.545. The density of crystal is around 3 compared to sodocalcic glass, which has a density of 2.5 kg.

using the blow technique and which was then placed inside an injection mould. The molten crystal is injected over the parison at high temperature. The mould is opened after a short while during which the pressure is maintained. In order to remove all traces of this delicate operation, the contours of the designs are reworked. Finally, the master glassmakers detach the piece carefully avoiding any mechanical or thermal shocks. Lastly, the piece is placed in the muffle kiln or lehr for slow annealing.

Delrin : is a DuPont de Nemours trademark. It is a resin with physical properties that offer a compromise between metals and other plastics: resistance, rigidity, hardness, dimensional stability, tenacity, fatigue endurance, solvent resistant, abrasion resistant, reduced wear and tear. (see black machined and polished Delrin used in the Tempting Crystals collection, PE 2008, Thorns Lamps small and large models).

Enameling: Ren LALIQUE became interested in the working of glass via this prestigious glassmaking technique. It is a decorating technique, which consists of painting couloured enamel with a brush or applying with a pad on the surface of the glass or crystal (see enamels) that are fusible at a low temperature (500C). Firing enamels on the crystal remains a delicate operation and can lead to distortions. In fact, enamel is applied to crystal at a temperature (500C) that is higher than the softening temperature of crystal (470C).

Density: the density of crystal is 3 (1 litre of crystal = 3 kg), whereas classic glass has density of 2.5.

Diamond point engraving: direct engraving is carried out using a diamond point. The diamond point comes in the form of a metal stylus at the end of which is fixed a diamond chip. The technique employed is similar to that of dry point metal engraving. The LALIQUE signature is engraved by hand using this technique.

Double injection: hot end process symbolising all the know-how of the Lalique master glassmakers, which consists of hot applying a coloured or colourless design on the body of the piece. Take for example a Vase where the parison was formed

Enamels: very fine powders, coloured by metallic oxides (gold makes red, cobalt makes blue, etc) and which are fusible at a high or low temperature.

large pieces up to 5 gatherings can be required. The gatherer may have to carry up to 25kg of molten glass at the end of his iron, helped by two iron carriers.

Finest Craftsmen of France (Meilleur Ouvrier de France - MOF): external recognition of the skills of the glassmaker. A title of excellence awarded to master glassmakers following a national competition. Around 7 Lalique glassmakers hold this title. The French Concours National du Travail (National Work Competition) allows candidates to create a masterpiece on a set subject to demonstrate their talent. Through this masterpiece they must display their dexterity, progressive technical knowledge, expertise, creativity, taste whilst employing modern techniques that respect the traditional methods. Competitors are judged within their category according to a two-level process. A title of excellence is therefore awarded within each craftsmanship category. The MOF titleholders at LALIQUE are foremen and are therefore heavily involved in the production of each LALIQUE crystal piece.
Finest Craftsman of France (MOF) Hot End: Franois Schilt and Jean Claude Hertrich of the LALIQUE crystal factory in Wingen both hold the title Finest Craftsman of France Hot End. Both worked for almost 500 hours over almost a year to perfect the skills required to product a unique masterpiece, without using a mould but working instead with traditional tools. They created a ball from a single piece of glass made, exceptionally, by hand according to strict tolerance criteria, overcoming the most complex technical difficulties. Finest Craftsman of France (MOF) Cold End: depending on the particular skill practiced, the Finest Craftsman of France Cold End receives the title MOF engraver or MOF cutter. Likewise, around 500 hours of work are put in by the craftsmen to produce and exceptional engraving or cut on a unique piece of crystal. Jacky Saenger MOF (engraving), Bertrand Metzger MOF (cutting) and Christian Dorckel MOF (cutting) are all LALIQUE MOF titleholders.

Lacquer: Technique that consists of applying superimposed layers of resin on the wood, so that it has a brilliant shine. Not to be confused with real lacquer from China or gum resin, of plant origin, red-brown in colour and applied to wood.

Glossing: see Polishing Lehr or annealing oven. The piece is carried along a conveyor belt through varying temperature gradients, until it reaches room temperature. This annealing process eliminates stresses in the crystal and allows for cold working. This stage may last between several hours to one week, depending on the size of the piece and the volume of crystal to be stabilised. Without this stage each piece would break.

Glue: protective film applied to the crystal to preserve the clear areas during sandblasting and matting processes. The red glue is therefore applied to protect the covered areas from the matting process by sandblasting. (See masking)

Ground stopper: hermetic fitting of the stopper to the bottle using a technique passed down by Ren Lalique. The crystal stopper is fitted to the neck of a bottle or the body of a decanter by a manual stage or by emery grinding. This process ensures each bottle or decanter has its own particular stopper, which cannot therefore be interchanged. Emery is an extremely hard mineral (predominantly composed of corundum) used as an abrasive during the cutting or grinding stages. LALIQUE is one of the only glassmakers to use this highly precise method specific to luxury perfumery.

Hot End: work involving transforming molten crystal, gathered at 1130C to 1200C, taking place in the hall, or the Hot End workshop. This stage is extremely delicate and only one of three pieces is accepted and sent for Cold End working. The other pieces that are refused are put in the scrap.

Lost wax process or Cire Perdue: process developed more than in 3000 years ago in the bronze age by the Chinese. This technique is used in the production of bronze, glass and crystal for producing a unique mould and piece. First, the design studio produces a plaster and/or plastaline model to give shape to the drawing. This model is then moulded using silicone rubber or elastomer. Then it is coated in plaster. Wax is poured into the mould and removed from the mould once hardened. The following stage consists of pouring refractory plaster over this wax piece. When placed in a furnace, the wax will melt under the effect of the heat and will create a hollow refractory plaster mould. Crystal is then poured into the unique refractory plaster mould. This stage is delicate, as the quantity of crystal must be adjusted to the volume of the piece. This technique enables the production of complex shapes that remain true to the detail and size of the design whilst producing pieces of reduced thickness. This process therefore gives free reign to creative spirit. It also reduces any reworking at the cold end stage (such as cutting off the excess glass from injection moulded pieces) or surface treatments on finished pieces. (More specifically, in order to make a vase or a hollow piece, a plaster core is made to preserve the cavity). This technique is still in the test stages at LALIQUE, and will initially be reserved for the manufacture of certain limited editions.

Matting: This is an acid engraving process, which involves immersing the glass in a bath of hydrofluoric acid. This technique can produce a multitude of different engraving effects, matt, satin or frosted. The appearance is created by the acid etching into the glass whilst the preserved areas that have been painted prior to immersion with a protective varnish, or asphaltum, remain clear. (Procedure called Masking, carried out by the decoration workshop).

crystal and gives the glass its polished and shiny finish. The satin re-polished finish, cherished by LALIQUE, requires manual polishing in order achieve the desired shade. There are several polishing methods: chemical polishing, whereby the piece is partially or entirely dipped into a hydrofluoric acid bath. When it comes into contact with the chemicals, the crystal regains its original shine. This procedure gives the piece a clear appearance. Polishing can also be done mechanically. For this procedure, the piece is held against a polishing wheel in order to give it a shiny appearance. Polishing is the last procedure undertaken before signature.

Metallising: process of producing a metallic effect on the surface of the crystal (gold, silver, copper). First, an initial epoxy varnish base is applied to the surface. Then aluminium is deposited by vacuum coating. This process is frequently used in auto and optics industries. Finally, a colourless protection varnish is applied to all the metallised area for a silver finish and a gold-tinted varnish is applied for a gold finish. Caution: pieces with this type of finish require some Precautions of Use instructions (handle with care; avoid contact with abrasive products; clean with a soft cloth).

Pontil rod: a metal rod with a flat plate on the end to hold the pieces by their injection moil for removal from the mould and fire polishing. See tools

Pot furnace: traditional glass and crystal makers oven, where the glass, placed inside pots, reaches its fusion temperature (see pot). Although pot furnaces can hold up to twenty or so pots, LALIQUE puts 12 pots in each furnace. There is an alternative to the pot furnace called a tank furnace in which the crystal reaches its melting temperature in large tanks rather than in a clay pot.

Muffle kiln: a bale-out furnace that muffles the flames, into which the piece is placed after Hot End working for progressive annealing, until it reaches room temperature. This annealing process removes any stresses in the crystal and prepares it for cold end work. If the weight or complexity of the shape of the piece requires longer than 24 hours to be annealed, it is placed inside the muffle kiln rather than the lehr.

Partial vitrification: Stage carried out before the pot is used for the first time, ensuring perfect seal of the inside surface of the pot During this 16 hour partial vitrification stage, the inner surface of the pot is heated to 1520C, up to a depth of 15 to 25mm ensuring optimum ceramicisation.

Polished: finish applied to the glass thereby giving the crystal an added shine. LALIQUE crystal has two type of finish: a polished finish giving a smooth and shiny appearance to the crystal and a satin finish. The special characteristic of LALIQUE crystal is combining these two finishes, polished and satin.

Polishing: final stage of finishing. Polishing removes traces of the tools and mould from the surface of the

Pots: LALIQUE is one of the few crystal makers to make and use its own pots. This large refractory clay pot is placed inside a pot furnace and holds the molten crystal, from when it is gathered to when placed inside a mould. A colour cycle from very light to very dark must be followed in order to ensure optimum use of the pot that can last from 3 weeks to 4 months. The quality of the crystal depends upon the quality of the pots, which is why LALIQUE makes its own pots in its pottery factory. The pots are produced using refractory clay made from natural earth and up to 30% chamotte (calcined, ground and screened clay). It takes one man 24 days to make 3 pots. These pots have a thickness of between 6 to 12 cm and it takes a minimum of 6 months for them to dry. They are placed successively in three drying chambers: from the room temperature of the manufacturing chamber, to the intermediate chamber and finally to the chamber near the furnaces where the temperature is around 60C. After drying, the pots are fired for 7 to 9 days at 1200C for a minimum of 8 hours. Lids are placed on the pots, which are left inside the furnace in order to reach a temperature of 1420C after 20 hours of firing. Once this temperature is reached, the lids are removed. The potters then build up the arch of clay around the mouth of the pot in order to completely caulk the joint between the furnace and the pot. Little by little, the temperature stabilises.

Rim (lip): (of a glass or other receptacle) The extreme upper surface of the body.

Precipitate: chemical transformation stage of the crystal particles at high temperature.

Pressing: different techniques Core ring pressing: The molten glass is poured into a mould into which core is placed. The core is ringed to ensure the impermeable of the mould. Pressure on the core compresses the glass between the mould and the core and fills up to the top of the core until it presses against the ring. If the core is embossed with a design, the design will remain imprinted on the internal surface of the piece. Technique used on large pressed pieces (Marguerite bowl, large model), medium pressed pieces (Pinson bowl, medium model), and even small pressed pieces (Romarin coupe).
Hydraulic injection pressing: Technique used to make large full or hollow pieces (vases). The gathered crystal is placed the feeders then injected from bottom to top, from the injection vessel into the mould. Injection pressing: Technique used to make small and medium-sized pieces. The gathered crystal is placed in the feeders then injected from bottom to top, from the injection vessel into the mould. Press-blow: manual pressing technique used to make small objects and bottle stoppers. Scallop pressing: This technique is similar to ring pressing. However, the glass is not held back by a ring and therefore overflows between the mould and the core thereby obtaining a certain irregularity in the rim during the procedure (Champs-Elyses bowl), or a rim that is not perpendicular to the core (Bucolique bowl, large model, Serpentine bowl) Vessel pressing: technique used to made full or hollow pieces (vases) weighing between 75g to 8kg. Manufacturing technique whereby the molten crystal is injected from top to bottom, from the injection vessel into the mould.

Sandblasting: engraving process by removing layers of glass. This clouding process achieved by blasting sand across the surface using compressed air, can be adjusted to etch the glass at differing depths. Furthermore, this clouding process can be used to produce a matte effect over the whole surface of the piece or on just parts of the decoration. Whilst the decoration is clouded by the blasting, the areas that are not to be clouded are protected by masking or sandblasting stencils. This technique is used for engraving, surface treatment or even direct sculpture of shapes. Sandblasting is an essential element of the repolished satin finish cherished by LALIQUE.

Satin finish: the finish applied to crystal for a matte effect by acid bath immersion or blasting with abrasive materials (see matting and sandblasting). LALIQUE crystal has two types of finish: a polished finish which gives the crystal a smooth, satin. The special characteristic of LALIQUE crystal is combining these two finishes, polished and satin. In order to modulate the satin finish effect, it is possible to regulate the pressure applied, the angle of the cut and the equitable distribution over the whole surface. Furthermore, sand is not currently employed for sandblasting but rather corundum aluminium oxide, which is finer and more precise.

Sawing out: removing glass using a diamond slitting wheel after Hot End work.

Seed(s) : or Bubble(s) that are small in size < 2mm, that form during the degassing of the components during the final fusing at a high temperature of around 1300C (fining).
Broken seed: seed that breaks through the surface of the crystal when handled. Forming seeds: Trapped gas bubbles that did not manage to escape during the fusing of the crystal. Gathering seeds: Bubbles that form accidentally between two layers of molten glass. Pipe seed: bubble left on the internal surface of the crystal object as a result of impurities stuck to the gathering iron. The molten crystal is fined by removing the seeds inside the glass before shaping it.

Quality: LALIQUEs quality charter. Each individual piece is subject to inspection. Selection is made several times during the various stages of the manufacturing process. Numerous tests are carried out in accordance with ISO standards and specific LALIQUE standards. Quality control guarantees the final selection. Once validated the piece will bear the LALIQUE signature, engraved freehand using diamond point.

GLOSSARY CRYSTAL
Shearing: First stage following Hot End working, similar to cracking off, and consists of removing the excess glass resulting from the injection process during Hot End work.

To remove this notice, visit: www.foxitsoftware.com/shopping

Stem: is the name given to the middle part of a glass or a high bowl, situated between bowl and the foot (or base).

Shears: see Tools

Shop: crew of Hot End workers. Work team made up of 1 to 13 people, from the servitor to the shop foreman.

Suck and Blow process: technique that involves partial mechanisation of the mouth-blowing process. Once the pieces have been blown in a parison mould they are then transferred to a blow mould. Technique restricted to small glassware, little vases, single stem vases and bottles.

Single Injection: a Hot End process, representing another area of expertise of the LALIQUE master glassmakers, which consists of hot gluing a coloured or colourless design onto the body of the piece. The molten crystal is injected onto the body of the piece, generally that of a bowl or a vase, at high temperature, in one go (using a single feeder):
in-line injection: Abundance bowl, Roxanne vase, glassware Staggered single injection: Rose vase, Martinique vase, Tanega vase.

Suction mark: is the term used to describe the distortion (suck-in) of the surface of the glass when the piece is removed from the mould early because the mould or the glass was too hot or air was trapped between the glass and the wall of the mould.

Surface treatment: this encompasses all procedures, whether chemical or mechanical, which modify the surface of the glass while providing protection against possible corrosion or which improve its appearance.

Tank furnace: there are two power source options for the tank furnace: electricity or gas. LALIQUE has opted for electricity-powered tank furnaces. For this system, the vitrifiable mixture is place inside a tank. The melting temperature is obtained by the Joule effect that activates the heating elements arranged around the tank while the pot furnace is heated by flames, the tank furnace is powered by an electrical source. The purest crystal rises progressively, via a system of communicating vases, to the feeding level to be gathered. The crystal is drawn in the gathering bay. This technique has the advantage of producing crystal that is defect-free and that does not require cleaning.

Thermal glossing: brush or spray application of a metallic enamel on a finished piece. The final effect is achieved after exposing the glazed piece to high temperature. This coats the surface of the piece with a coloured metallic sheen.

Tongs: see Tools

Tools used by master glass and crystal makers: in addition to blowing and pressing, crystal is shaped using various tools:
Castanets: for shaping the feet of glasses. 314 - Divers / Miscellaneous

GLOSSARY CRYSTAL
Jacks: for opening out necks. Pontil rod and gathering irons: for picking up the glass. Shaping blocks: wooden spatula, spoon or cube hollowed out and soaked in water, applied to smooth the molten glass during gathering. Shears: used for trimming and drawing out the gathered crystal to remove impurities. Tongs: universal glassmakers tool. The ends, the cutting edge or the back can be used to draw out or reshape the crystal during hot end work.

Undercut: refers to a sticking point between the crystal piece and the mould when it is being removed. The areas that are particular susceptible to undercut are the mould pivot points.

Wavy cord: A fine, blurred wavy cord in the process of re-absorption. Wavy cords can be removed by fire polishing or cutting the Cold End workshops. Wheel engraving: wheel engraving is a very ancient technique, inspired by the work of the fine stone engravers which was carried out using shaping tools of varying size and composition, (copper, lead, carborundum, stone, cork) that are today mounted on an electric wheel. The glass is scored by a combination of the action of the wheel and the use of an abrasive powder and is regularly moistened with water or sometimes oil.

Wrinkle(s): condition of the surface, where slight rippling is visible for three reasons: the mould was too cold, the molten crystal moved at an incorrect speed when injected into the mould from the pot , the glass was too cold thereby provoking a higher viscosity on the surface. Light wrinkles may be removed by fire polishing after Hot end work or during cutting in the Cold End workshops.
