The astrologer first looks as to what category the horoscope belongs to and then gets down to calculating the life span. Saturn is deemed as the Ayush karaka or significator of life. The 2nd and 7th houses of a horoscope are called Maaraka or Killer houses; the 3rd and 8th houses are houses of life.
