Digital Unit Plan Template Unit Title: WWI Content Area: Social Studies

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s): 10.5 Students analyze the causes and course of the First World War. 1. Analyze the arguments for entering into war presented by leaders from all sides of the Great War and the role of political and economic rivalries, ethnic and ideological conflicts, domestic discontent and disorder, and propaganda and nationalism in mobilizing the civilian population in support of total war. 2. Examine the principal theaters of battle, major turning points, and the importance of geographic factors in military decisions and outcomes (e.g., topography, waterways, distance, climate). 4. Understand the nature of the war and its human costs (military and civilian) on all sides of the conflict, including how colonial peoples contributed to the war effort. 5. Discuss human rights violations and genocide, including the Ottoman governments actions against Armenian citizens. Big Ideas:

How did the war get started? How did the war effect the people fighting it as well as those around it? What was the Armenian Genocide and why did it occur? Unit Goals and Objectives: 1. 2. 3. Students will examine the political and social events leading up the the war and the triggers which set it off. Students will look into the course of the war and conditions of the individual's experience, and how industrialization changed the battlefield. Students will research the violations of human rights and be able to form their own arguments on the matter of genocide.

Unit Summary: Students will study the diverse causes of the war from multiple perspectives. They will then learn about how the war was fought through its course and the notable events that happened along the way. Special attention will be given to the subject of the Armenian Genocide and its effects to the present day. In a final unit project students will examine the entire pre-war and war time period from the perspective of one country and present their findings.

Assessment Plan: Entry-Level: Students will answer prompts in the class discussion board refreshing their background knowledge in the concepts of Nationalism and what had previously been happening in Europe. Formative: 1. After viewing lesson one students will predict what will happen next using a flow chart 2. Students will create their own sets of flash cards using Quizlet 3. After reading online students will write a letter home from the perspective of a soldier 4. After the webquest and watching videos provided students will write a letter arguing for one side of the Armenian Genocide controversy Summative: 1. In groups students will use Glogster to make a digital poster about the war from one countrys point of view. Then write reviews of each others projects 2. A final quiz using Socrative

Lesson 1 Student Learning Objective: Students will learn about the background of the conditions in Europe and contributing causes of WWI Lesson 2 Student Learning Objective: Students will examine the atrocities of the Armenian Genocide and form opinions Lesson 3 Student Learning Objective: To study the course of the war and its various turning points, showing evidence of research by explaining significance of each event Acceptable Evidence: Completion of the timeline graphic organizer Instructional Strategies: Communication X Collection X Collaboration X Presentation X Organization Interaction
Lesson Activities: In pairs students will navigate the internet and their textbooks to find 6 events they believe are significant enough to be included on their timelines. They will then have to justify their choices.

Acceptable Evidence: Students will fully fill out the guided notes and answer questions posed in the prezi presentation. They will then submit it to the teacher Acceptable Evidence: Sudents will complete the WebQuest questions and use knowledge to also complete the fourth formative assessment.

Lesson Activities: Students complete the WebQuest individually and explore all the sites provided. Then submit the completed WebQuest. Combine with formative assessment 4 to complete that assignment as well
