The Nature of Mathematics

Characteristics:

- its content - patterns and relationship - its division into pure and applied form - alliance with science

a) its content
the most distinguishing feature of mathematics is its

content. but development in the discipline have been so complex and so numerous that it is impossible to say much about its varius branches and sub-branches.

b) patterns and relationship

mathematicians search for patterns and

relationship in number, quantity and space. above all, they try to impose system and order on mathematical phenomena so as to gain a better understanding of their essential structure. often, abstract pattern have turned out much later to be very useful in science.

d) its division into pure and applied form

in its infancy, mathematics was always used to

solve practical problem pure mathematics owes its existence to curiosityarguable the greatest motivating force of all for learning. The Greeks were not content to know that something worked, they wanted to know why it worked.

e) alliance with science

science provides mathematics with interesting

problems to investigate mathematics provides science with powerful tools to use in analyzing data. mathematics is the chief languege of science.
