Lesson Plan Leather Carving

Date: April 3rd, 2013 Class: Art 11/12, Ceramics 11/12 Block: 3

Desired Results Objectives: Students are to learn the basic techniques used to carve designs into leather. Once the students have mastered their carving skills they will design and carve their own key fob Prescribed Learning Outcome: Students will build skill and knowledge of how to work with leather and leather carving tools. -Students will develop skills in using tools and equipment to manipulate their materials to get desired effects

-Students will apply design strategies to their concept and may need to consider how to solve possible issues with their design

Time Before Class 10 mins

Materials -leather samples, leather squares, swivel knives and stamp tools, sponges, water, mallets -paint brushes, glazes

Class Begins 10 mins

20-30 mins (this is the first time I will be giving this demo, I am flexible to

allowing it to take more time if the students have a lot of questions)

-students will return to their desks and experiment with scrap leather 5 mins -notify students that there is 5 mins left of class, to clean up and make sure students return their tools to the front table. -Ceramics 11/12 students will clean up their desks and make sure all brushes are properly cleaned. Extra Activity: Should students complete their leather carving experiments they may proceed to designing their design for their key fob. If the Ceramics 11/12 students finish painting their vases they may complete their 3D plaster bandage sculptures.
