Open Architecture Synthesis Studio

Vision and technology converge in one brilliant instrument that sits in a class all its own...

THE AMAZING NEW KORG OASYS OPEN ARCHITECTURE SYNTHESIS STUDIO.

Its been a busy year for OASYS racking up a Key Buy award from Keyboard Magazine, an Electronic Musician Editors Choice award, critical acclaim from artists, hearty praise from legions of fans, and hundreds of satisfied owners and users. More than an entirely new instrument, OASYS is a completely new platform to support Korg innovation for years to come. New synthesis methods for creating sound (EXi Expansion Instruments), new effects (EXf Expansion Effects), and additional ROM libraries (EXs Expansion Sample Libraries) can be added, ensuring that OASYS will remain the centerpiece of your musical world well into the future. sound quality that is a new milestone for a professional musical instrument.

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS Powered by an ultra-fast processor, OASYS offers all the benefits of a variable software system, with no resource-consuming host environment. The dedicated operating system allows OASYS to devote nearly its entire computational horsepower to creating the purest audio waveforms with none of the aliasing or high frequency degradation found in other systems. And best of all, OASYS offers the hardware integrity that can only come from a fully-integrated instrument design. As with any musical instrument, it all begins with the sound. OASYS delivers a level of realism, fidelity and

FANTASTIC FOUR OASYS contains four different synthesis engines to fill your audio palette, including the new STR-1 Plucked String EXi Expansion Instrument. Korgs HD-1 High Definition PCM synth, plus two EXi Expansion Instruments the AL-1 Analog Modeling synth and the CX-3 Modeled Tonewheel Organ complete this quartet. All four synthesis techniques can be used together in a variety of ways, with a patent-pending system of free allocation of voices between synths and effects. An EXi Program can actually host two synth engines, so you can use two AL-1s to create super-powerful synth sounds, or two CX-3s to create new hybrid organ timbres. For the adventurous sound designer you can blend an STR-1 and AL-1 to create new imaginative timbres the choice is yours! STELLAR SYNTHESIS First up is the HD-1 High Definition Synthesizer, offering up to 172 notes of polyphony and preloaded with a staggering 628 MB of wave ROM. This includes many stereo waveforms with long sample lengths for natural decays and up to 4-way velocity-switched

acoustic instrument and drum samples. Advances in this PCM engine include an oscillator that can play back stereo waveforms and supports 4-way switching and crossfading. Dual oscillators, dual multi-mode resonant filters (low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, band-reject), a Drive parameter for adding analog grit, three LFOs per-voice and a common LFO, a 3-band EQ, and three super-fast, detailed Envelope Generators allow for very complex and nuanced Program design.

BLAST FROM THE PAST Our revolutionary Vector Synthesis and Wavesequencing are back and theyre better than ever. Vector Synthesis allows for smooth blending between the two oscillators and user-definable modulation either programmed in or via the Vector Joystick. Wave Sequences play back a series of selected waveforms over time, creating either distinctive rhythmic timbres or smooth, complex and continually evolving sounds. New additions to this classic technology include enhanced tempo synchronization plus swing and realtime duration modulation. Additionally, the integrated step-sequencers allow Wave Sequences to control virtually any Program parameter such as filter cutoff, pan, Drive, LFO speed and more.

THE ULTIMATE VA Next up is the AL-1, a state-of-the-art virtual analog synth delivering an unparalleled 84 notes of polyphony, capable of sounding an incredible 504 oscillators. This responsive synth features our patent-pending, ultra-low aliasing oscillators that recreate all the power and glory of true analog synthesis. The two main oscillators offer eight flexible waveforms for a wide palette of modulatable shapes. An adjustable edge parameter provides vintage oscillator modeling, while sync, FM, and several varieties of ring modulation offer plenty of tone-mangling power. A sub oscillator, colored noise generator, and live audio input round out the signal sources. Korgs new MultiFilter lets you crossfade in real time between any two of 21 different filter types including your own custom mixes of LP , HP , BP and dry input. Drive and Low Boost provide per-voice grit, girth and distortion. The AL-1 offers a wealth of modulation riches: five punchy, re-triggerable envelopes; four super-fast, multi-waveform, tempo-synched LFOs; dual AMS Mod Mixers; dual key-tracking generators; and a per-voice, 32-step Step Sequencer. The standard EXi Program structure adds even more modulation power, including

STRINGS AND THINGS The latest release from Korgs physical modeling workshop is the STR-1 Plucked String expansion instrument. Beyond the remarkable guitars and basses, this versatile engine is capable of creating both traditional sounds and unique, experimental timbres. The 128 stunning Programs provided for the 32-voice STR-1 take full advantage of all of the OASYS many controllers, expressively changing their tone in ways that are impossible for sample-based sound generators to imitate. In creating a sound, the STR-1 lets you use 16 different pluck types, noise, or any of the onboard or RAM-based PCM waveforms to pluck, strike, scrape, or otherwise excite the string. Other unique modeling parameters involve damping, harmonics, and dispersion even physical characteristics of the string and modeled feedback interaction. The string timbre can be shaped further using dual multi-mode resonant filters (including the AL-1 style Multi Filter), plus an additional filter dedicated to the string excitation. For further sonic control, the STR-1 offers four per-voice LFOs, five re-triggerable EGs, two key tracking generators, a string tracking generator, four AMS mixers and more. Finally, the STR-1 has access to all the standard EXi Program features, including Vector control, Step Sequencer, EQ, effects, and of course, KARMA. And the KARMA voicing for this new soundset is a virtual master class in the capabilities of this powerful technology.
the Program-wide Common LFO and Common Step Sequencer, two more key tracking generators and the Vector Envelope.

ORGAN-IC AUDIO Based on the current Korg CX-3, the third OASYS sound engine delivers one of the most accurate models of that classic organ sound ever developed. This EXi design features dual drawbars, control over every nuance of the sound including leakage, key click, adjustable percussion, chorus/vibrato and a complete rotary speaker simulation. It also features Korgs unique EX Mode which adds additional harmonics and percussion tunings, opening up a new world of organic timbres. The control surface of the OASYS provides direct access to your nine drawbars via the sliders, and switches to access the vibrato/chorus, percussion and all traditional tonewheel organ controls are laid out in a logical and familiar manner.

UNLOCKING THE COMBINATION OASYS extends Korgs famed Combination mode, providing the ability to layer and split up to 16 Programs across the keyboard to create huge multi-timbres and performance setups. In addition to providing more sound elements, this means that Combis can be set up and saved as complete 16-part sequencing templates for use with an external sequencer and computer DAWs a much-requested feature! You can freely blend Programs from the HD-1, STR-1, AL-1 and CX-3 engines to create amazing new textures. Combination Mode is where the Vector Synthesis features really come alive blending between four different mixtures of sounds to create evocative, moving timbres. And weve added a powerful Tone Adjust feature, which provides control over 33 timbre parameters, so you can edit each of the 16 sounds in context without affecting the original Program. >>

CAUSE AND EFFECTS OASYS extends the quantity and quality of on-board effects, offering an astounding 12 Insert, 2 Master and 2 Total effects. With 185 algorithms, the possibilities are vast; and weve included the ToneWorks (REMS) mic, amp and speaker models; the amazing O-Verb from the OASYS-PCI card; the Chorus/Vibrato circuit from the CX-3; plus a wealth of new effects and classic Korg favorites. And you can even use the OASYS as a 6-input/10-output real-time effects processor for your other gear! But in the end, it is Korgs legendary voicing quality that is sure to impress. Our international OASYS sound design team worked for years to create hundreds and hundreds of stunning new Programs, from realistic acoustic instruments to fat, imaginative synth sounds; from signature organ sounds designed by top players to cutting-edge sounds that exploit the incredible power of the AL-1. OASYS comes loaded with 1,280 Programs and room for a total of 1,664 user sounds (13 Banks). All sound locations are fully editable, so you are free to tweak any sound. There are 40 drumkits provided, and room for a total of 152. These drumkits support stereo samples, 4-way velocity-switching and a 3-band EQ per drum index. As for the 16-part Combinations, 384 come preloaded, with room for a total of 1,792 (14 Banks). KARMA THE NEXT GENERATION KARMA is our revolutionary algorithmic performance technology that generates amazing phrases, grooves, and other musical effects that can be altered and randomized in real time. KARMA continues to set the standard by which all other arpeggiators, phrase players and musical effect generators are judged. KARMA gives you the power to play impossible interweaving cascades of notes, techno arpeggios and effects, dense rhythmic and melodic textures, naturalsounding glissandos, intricate finger-picking and guitarstrumming, swooping portamento and pitch bend moves and more! But what KARMA really offers is inspiration. KARMA allows OASYS to improvise with you, stretching and expanding your own creative ideas. Many new features keep this second generation of KARMA technology on the extreme cutting edge. KARMA Wave Sequencing allows KARMA to manipulate the playback of the actual samples and waveforms that create each sound, allowing each note to access a different waveform as it is generated, without having to edit any Programs! Note Remapping provides a powerful way to transform drum grooves, by instantly substituting

one of the thousands of available drum sounds for any other one. It can also be used to melodically transform KARMA-generated notes, such as changing all major sixths to major ninths. In Program Mode you can assign one KARMA Generated Effect (GE) to the sound; Combi and Sequencer Modes offer up to four GEs at a time. In these modes, each of the four KARMA Modules now has its own Module Layer, where the eight sliders, eight switches, and eight scene buttons provide dedicated control over a single GE. In addition to the four Module Layers, a Master Layer can be mapped to parameters from any of the modules, even grouping them together so one slider can control the swing feel of all four modules at the same time, or the rhythmic activity of two or three modules at once. Best of all, weve made KARMA significantly easier to use while making it even more flexible! All of the onboard 2000+ KARMA Generated Effects (GEs) have been standardized to one of 13 different Real-Time Control Models (RTC Models). An RTC Model specifies which parameters of a KARMA GE are available for real-time control and how the Control Surface is assigned to them. Using these RTC models, what you learn while controlling one GE is consistent and applicable to other GEs as well.

sends and more. It is also a complete real-time interface for sounds and KARMA parameters. Finally, in External Mode the control surface can be mapped to various MIDI Controller messages to control external gear such as soft synths, computer DAWs and other MIDI hardware. Each knob and slider has a multi-stage LED to indicate each parameters current value. The controllers offer a choice of jump or catch behavior to match your personal preference.

TWO MODELS TO CHOOSE FROM The OASYS comes in two configurations, a 76-note synth action keyboard and an 88-note weighted action keyboard featuring our graded hammer action (RH2) so the low notes are heavier than the upper, just like a real piano. Of course both actions support after-touch sensitivity.

STR-1 PLUCKED STRING The latest synthesis engine for the OASYS is the STR-1 Plucked String EXi, and its included free with the Version 1.10 update. The STR-1 uses advanced physical modeling techniques to create an incredible assortment of sounds ranging from astounding guitar and bass recreations, harpsichord, harp, and bell sounds, to ethnic sounds and unique experimental sounds that dont exist in the real world. All of which expressively change their tone under your fingertips in a way that is impossible for sample-based sound generators to imitate. This powerful modeling technology will greatly increase the soundcreating potential of your OASYS! SUPPORT FOR 2 GBYTES OF MEMORY This software update allows the internal memory to be expanded up to 2 Gbytes. Adding more RAM not only increases your sampling space, it also lets you load both of the EXs-1 and EXs-2 expansion PCM libraries simultaneously. AUDIO INPUT PROCESSING Starting with the STR-1 Plucked String EXi, audio input has been added as a standard sound parameter. This allows any external audio source to be processed by the synthesizer, and you can even apply feedback to the sound of the EXi synth engine itself, giving you an even broader range of possibilities. NEW AMS MIXING TOOLS A new Gate function has been added to the AMS mixer list, adding to the OASYS already vast offering of AMS (Alternate Modulation Source) choices. Gate operates similarly to the side chain used in audio effects such as compressors. For example, you can use this to apply pitch bend to specific pitches and not to other pitches, or cause the STR-1 to produce a harmonics effect only when a specific velocity is exceeded, or use the joystick or other controller to switch between two LFOs in real time. This gives you an immense amount of creative freedom and the potential to achieve new levels of performance expression.

PROUD PEDIGREE OF SOUND Based on the acclaimed HI (Hyper Integrated) sound engine that has made the TRITON series the choice of professional musicians the world over, the TR series offers a 64 MB sample ROM that is twice the size of the original TRITON. With multi-level dynamics and natural instrument articulation, this expanded sample set includes a new stereo piano, nylon and acoustic guitars, electric pianos, voice, strings, brass and solo woodwinds producing expressive, detailed and realistic sounds. In addition, youll find a full complement of excellent up-todate drum sounds. And true to its heritage, the TR remains compatible with many TRITON family sounds and songs. All in all, youll find 512 individual Programs created by Korgs international sound design team plus another 128 GM sounds and nine additional GM drum kits. Up to eight Programs can be split, layered, velocity-switched or zoned across the keyboard to create a single Combination and 384 Combis come loaded in each TR. But thats just to get you started each Program and Combi can be tweaked and re-saved with your own custom settings. The TR series organizes all of the Programs and Combis into user-defined Categories to speed up the sound selection process, and you can easily search for sounds by Category from the front panel. Even the PCM waveforms and effect algorithms are organized by category a real time saver when editing and creating your custom sounds. When hunting for that perfect Program, you can use the Audition key to automatically play an appropriate musical phrase thats performed using the selected sound.

ADD LIFE TO YOUR WORKSTATION PERFORMANCE Of course the TR workstations are fully programmable synths, with powerful multi-mode resonant filters, advanced EGs (envelope generators), multiple LFOs and more to help you create any sound you wish. Modulation is an important part of this artistry, and the TR provides a total of 42 modulation sources including EG, LFO, keyboard tracking, and performance controllers to create extremely sophisticated sounds. The four-way joystick lets you simultaneously apply pitch bend and modulation effects including vibrato, tremolo and wah. Four assignable knobs, two assignable switches and assignable foot pedal jacks provide you with a full range of real-time control that is indispensable for burning up the stage or cutting sizzling tracks. Borrowing development from Korgs acclaimed D-Series digital recorders and TRITON family workstations, the TR offers a broad palette of 89 effect types to enrich your sound creations. The effect section consists of two Master effects, one stereo Insert effect, and one Master EQ (stereo three-band) together with a sophisticated mixer section that lets you control the routing of these individual components. Many of the effect parameters offer real-time modulation and tempo -based synchronization, providing the total integration required to bring your overall sound to perfect completion. FAST TRACK PRODUCTION TOOLS While the TRs remarkable sound is sure to inspire, capturing that vision couldnt be easier. The onboard sequencer records in both real time and step time, and comes packed with a host of powerful editing options. Setting up for a new song is easy. Select a template song (16 preset, 16 user) from a wide variety of styles, and sounds and effects are automatically pre-assigned to each track. The TR will even suggest appropriate drum patterns and assign them to your song. Better yet, the Auto Song Setup instantly copies your current sound settings (Program or Combination) into a new record-ready song, complete with all the effect and arpeggiator settings intact! Either way, you can begin recording immediately, before you lose that flash of musical inspiration.

Does your creativity come in smaller chunks? Using the Cue List allows you to work on each section of your song as an individual sequence, and then build your arrangement up in sections (up to 99) and convert it all into a single song. The sequencers Real-time Pattern Play/Recording (RPPR) function lets you record sequenced phrases or patterns and assign them to individual keys for playback. You can create and save up to 100 patterns in each Song, in addition to the 150 preset drum patterns. This unlocks amazing performance possibilities you can switch patterns with each key and even use multiple keys to play different phrases simultaneously, recording all your real-time moves into a new track as you go.

JAE DEAL

AN EXTREMELY GOOD DEAL

By Ming Chen Photo by Darren Young At the time I came on board, Mario was at the top of Billboard for about ten weeks, so the energy was incredible the music was truly great, and everyone treated us with a lot of respect, declares Jae Deal. Regarded by many as an incredible up and coming producer, Jae has been working behind the scenes and on stage with some of the most well known pop, R&B, and hip hop artists, including Snoop Dogg, Dru Hill, Faith Evans and Marques Houston. He has also contributed to the works of legends such as Elton John and Andra Crouch, and has played a part in high profile tours such as the P-Diddy world tour and the Snoop Dogg tour. You would think from his experience that he has been in the industry for thirty years, but Jae is still in his twenties. The reason that he has already achieved so much is due to his musical skills as both a producer and a performer. Check out www.korg.com/JaeDeal and read the whole story, as Jae talks about his steps to success and his reliance on his Korg TRITON Extreme and microKONTROL to get the job done.

BEYOND SEQUENCING TRITON Extreme is one daring and dangerous performance instrument, and its also an amazing compositional tool. Sixteen tracks, 200 songs and 200,000 notes are just the beginning. Step time, real time, looping and pattern based recording modes allow you to capture your musical ideas your way. Sequencing is so much more than just record and playback, and TRITON Extreme delivers the tools you need to polish your songs into gemstones. Quantize functions tighten up your timing or add swing to a steady beat. Twenty-four Tone Adjust parameters let you quickly edit the timbre assigned to any track without exiting the sequencer, and leave the original program untouched. Sys Ex recording allows you to automate your mix in new and creative ways muting tracks, soloing others, loading new effect programs during different sections, and more. TRITON Extreme also uses song templates to give you a head start when laying down tracks. Each template assigns timbres to each track, assigns and routes effects, and can even offer up a variety of rhythm patterns to get you going. Sixteen song templates, each tuned to a different musical style, are preset and you can also create 16 all your own, eliminating repetitive steps when you want to get your ideas down. If youd like to work on your masterpiece in smaller chunks, you can compose individual songs for the verse, chorus and bridge etc.; the Cue List function allows you to string these individual parts together. Once you have decided on the right order and you can try a number of versions simply convert the Cue List into a single song. You can also create your hits from even smaller building blocks. With Korgs Real-time Pattern Play and Record (RPPR) function, short sequenced patterns can be assigned and played back from individual keys on the keyboard. BEHIND THE SCENES MUSCLE Its not just whats up front that counts. The TRITON Extremes back panel is decked out with all the trappings a modern synth should have. In addition to the main left and right outputs, there are four assignable individual outputs to send your sound where you want it. Two audio inputs with adjustable gain and MIC/LINE level switching allow you to sample from a wide range of sources, as well as access the internal effects. PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE COME TOGETHER IN ONE THRILLING INSTRUMENT THAT IS EVERY SYNTHESISTS DREAM.
With a bold new approach that is at once both daring and familiar, RADIAS exceeds common analog expectations and rapidly takes off for uncharted territories. Based on Korgs cutting-edge MMT engine, this 24-voice synthesizer offers a variety of synthesis algorithms together with multiple effects, new comb filter and wave shaping features, modulation sequencing, as well as new formant-motion vocoding. RADIAS offers an innovative design that can be custom configured to suit your set-up. The control module can be used independently or teamed with the unique dedicated keyboard, creating a seamlessly integrated instrument that delivers the sounds of the future today.

INNOVATIVE TIMBRE SYNTHESIS TEAMED WITH REMARKABLE FIDELITY The heart of RADIAS beats with Korgs cutting-edge MMT (Multi Modeling Technology) synth engine, and borrows much of its modeling techniques from Korgs flagship OASYS eliminating aliasing noise in even the highest frequencies and delivering clean, pure waveforms. RADIAS provides two oscillators for each timbre. Between them, they deliver not only modeled analog waveforms, but also formant waveforms, noise, ring modulation, sync, plus both classic and up-to-date PCM waveforms. When using the analog modeled waveforms,

a variety of oscillator modulation algorithms including pulse-width modulation, a massive Unison mode, Korgs proprietary VPM (Variable Phase Modulation) or cross modulation can be used to create complex sounds, even from a single oscillator. RADIAS provides a dual-filter structure, allowing the two filters to be used individually, side by side, or in series for maximum versatility. Filter 1 is highlighted by a continuously variable multi-mode filter, embracing Low Pass, High Pass and Band Pass modes and new treatments in between. This dual filter arrangement provides a vast range of sounds that would be unimaginable from just a single filter, and opens up new sonic possibilities including some fantastic comb filtering. Three Envelope Generators (EG) are used to apply time-varying changes to the pitch, filter cutoff, and amp level, as well as many other parameters. The classic and intuitive four-stage ADSR design has been enhanced with five different attack and release curves, allowing the EG contours to be crafted with new levels of precision and articulation. Two LFOs are available to apply cyclic changes to a host of synth parameters. Six LFO waveforms are provided, including the popular Sample & Hold stepped wave. Each waveform can be extensively modified via the Shape control, greatly expanding the versatility of the LFO section for creating highly complex types of modulation. Adding Drive can produce the distinctive warmth of a true analog synthesizer and can also distort the sound

intensely to generate new overtones. The amount of Drive is dependent on the level of each voice as it enters the mixer, so you can create nuances that cannot be achieved by an external effect unit. RADIAS offers eleven innovative types of Wave shaping even recreating the shaping circuit can be placed in different locations in the signal chain, affecting the sound in very meaningful ways. An additional Punch Level setting emphasizes the attack portion of the sound, letting you create sounds with even more impact. Clearly, this is a radical new instrument that is not bound by conventions of the past.

sixteen-band vocoder that allows the level and pan of each band to be individually adjusted to obtain a wide range of sounds, above and beyond the distinctive talking music and robot voice effects. Our new Formant Motion function can record up to 7.5 seconds of incoming formant information (spoken words, scat singing, etc.) so that you can re-create vocoder effects even without a microphone present. Sixteen sets of recorded formant data can be stored in the internal memory.

THE BEST SOUNDS AROUND RADIAS comes loaded with 256 programs, 32 drum kits, and 16 formant motion sets, all created by an international team of synth experts. A program can consist of up to four complete timbres, and each timbre can be assigned its own note range, output, MIDI channel and control parameters, allowing your RADIAS to perform as a multitimbral module or one monster performance synth. Each drum kit consists of sixteen different drum or percussion instruments assigned to separate keys. In B addition to calling up an individual PCM drum waveform, each drum instrument uses all of the parameters in the synth section, such as filter, EG, LFO and virtual patches to create incredibly detailed sounds. To speed up the sound creation process, RADIAS includes templates that can be used as starting points; and you can begin your own customization from there. RADIAS provides template data for 128 synth timbres, 128 insert effects, and 128 master effects so you can create new sounds faster than you ever thought possible. And as easy as RADIAS is to use, youll also appreciate the free RADIAS Sound Editor/L ibrarian software for editing, managing and archiving your RADIAS settings on your computer (Mac or PC). A single USB connection makes transferring data quick and easy. NEW SHAPE, NEW POSSIBILITIES You can choose the RADIAS model thats right for you; RADIAS consists of a sound module section plus a dedicated 49-note, velocity-sensing keyboard with traditional Pitch and Mod wheels. The panel layout features a lavish complement of knobs and buttons, letting you enjoy the same intuitive feel of creating sounds as on an analog synthesizer. The unique design allows the knob-laden control module to pivot up or down, and even move to the side to accommodate a laptop computer, ELECTRIBE, KAOSS Pad or other audio unit. RADIASR is the sound module by itself, which can be used both as a rackmount or tabletop synthesizer.

DYNAMIC MODULATION STATION Three Modulation Sequencers can change a parameters value in discreet steps over time, similar to using sequencing control voltages (CV) on analog synthesizers of the past. The value of each step can be edited in real time using the front panel knobs. Each Mod Sequence can be up to sixteen steps long, and each can play forwards, backwards, loop, etc., allowing you to create very detailed filter and panning changes or complex and evolving timbres that build over time. The six virtual patches are modern versions of the patch cords found on Korgs classic PS and MS series of synthesizers, among other legends of the past. Going beyond the hardwired limits of a normal voice structure, a virtual patch provides a method for freely connecting any of eleven modulation sources to any of fifteen destinations, accommodating even the most advanced modulation routings. FORMANT MOTION VOCODING KEEPS THINGS MOVING Thanks to the included headset microphone, you can enjoy vocoding using your voice to modulate another sound the instant the idea strikes you, with the push of a single button. RADIAS provides a

POWERFUL PROGRAM PARAMETERS RADIAS effect section provides a two-band EQ and two insert effects for each timbre, plus a master effect for the complete program, delivering a total of nine possible simultaneous effects. Thirty effect algorithms are provided, ranging from delay, chorus, and reverb to compressor and talking modulator. You can assign any effect parameter to the front panel knobs for instant control, providing even more versatility in sound design. Arpeggiator settings can be made for each program individually, and the arpeggiator can be applied to any or all of the timbres in a program. Six types of arpeggiator patterns are provided. Patterns can be up to 32 steps long; the gate time, velocity, and on/off status can be set for each step individually to create the exact groove you want. Swing amount and octave range are also assignable for even more detailed control. Two step sequencers can record and play back performance data, each with up to 32 steps. By applying a step sequencer to a drum kit, you can use RADIAS as a programmable drum machine. Each step supports up to eight notes of polyphony, allowing the creation of dense sequenced passages and patterns that can be played back with just one finger. With sequence editing, you can adjust settings such as swing and gate time. The two step sequencers can be set to transpose live from the keyboard, and can also be linked to create a single step sequencer of up to 64 steps.

KEYS TO ANY MUSICAL DOOR While the words portable and affordable describe the K-Series USB-MIDI Studio Controllers, they by no means define them. Each model features solid, full-size keys, and a selection of four velocity curves (including a fixed level great for mimicking organs and early mono synths) that tailor the keyboard response to match any performer. Available in 25, 49 and 61 key versions, their octave shift keys provide access to the full range of notes, and the key transpose function lets you reach them comfortably or instantly match the range of another performer. Authentic baroque and classical temperaments add even more versatility. CONTROL FREAK The K25, K49, and K61 are graced with a variety of sophisticated controllers unusual for an instrument in this class. Performers will be happy to see a set of Pitch Bend and Modulation wheels, just like in our RADIAS, MS2000B and microKORG synthesizers. Is a joystick more your style? Weve got you covered. Our innovative ClickPoint performs double duty, as either as an X/Y joystick or as a USB mouse to navigate through your softsynths or DAW software. This dynamic controller is a 3-axis, spring-loaded, fingertip joystick-trackball that is difficult to describe, but easy to use. Two assignable switches can be set to either momentary or toggle

operation, and both On and Off values can be set, opening up extended performance possibilities. These switches can even be set as Program Change up and down buttons. A pair of knobs can be assigned independently to any controller, and both transmit the full range of values. Next to the keyboard youll also find an assignable slider. And if you run out of hands operating all these controllers, the K-Series also includes an assignable foot switch input on the back panel. Even with all these individual controllers, the stylized K-Series retain a simple, intuitive and uncluttered presentation.

CMT (COMPONENT MODELING TECHNOLOGY) In contrast to existing approaches that simply simulate the output sound, CMT digitally models the transistors, condensers, resistors, and other parts used in the original MS-20 and Polysix hardware. Finally, the complex sound and parameter response can be perfectly reproduced, delivering all the power and subtlety that until now only true analog synthesis could provide. MS-20 Since 1978, this semi-modular monophonic synthesizer has enjoyed unbroken popularity for its thick sound, aggressive analog filters, and inexhaustible potential for creative patching. With two oscillators (with ring-modulation), high-pass/ low-pass self-oscillating filters with unique distortion, and a patch section that accepts external audio input, the MS-20 software synthesizer provides a complete simulation of its legendary original. In addition, it delivers modern advantages such as 32-note polyphony (max), up to 16-voice unison (with detune/spread function), advanced modulation settings and MIDI clock synchronization for even greater creative potential. In the true modular spirit, even the MS-20s modulation patch-points can be selected as External Modulation sources. SPECIAL MS-20 CONTROLLER While the Legacy collection accurately recreates the classic MS-20 sound, the MS-20 Controller captures all the fun of hands-on sound programming and knobtwisting performance that made vintage synths such a blast to play! From the shape of the knobs, the panel silk-screening, right down to the color of the included patch cords, the 84% scale commemorative MS-20 USB-MIDI controller perfectly replicates the original MS-20, upgraded to include a velocity-sensing mini keyboard. POLYSIX In 1981 the Polysix programmable six-voice analog synthesizer became an instant worldwide hit, thanks to

KORG LEGACY COLLECTION -DIGITAL EDITION

As the original manufacturer, Korg has earned critical acclaim by using its unique knowledge and technical prowess to transform its historic hardware instruments into superb sounding software synthesizers. Korgs latest software suite expands into the world of Virtual Digital, offering an exacting recreation of the legendary Korg M1 that actually surpasses the original, the updated and enhanced WAVESTATION 1.5, and the MDE-X 1.2 multi-effect plug-in. All three titles now feature RTAS, VST and AudioUnits support, allowing them to be fully integrated into the most up-to-date audio environments.

WAVESTATION

All of the WAVESTATION series factory preset programs, performances, and patches are included. You can also import any WAVESTATION series data that has been stored in .SYX format.

LEGACY CELL Legacy Cell is a revolutionary combination structure that lets you mix and match up to two MS-20/Polysix synths with four insert and two master effects into a single instrument that delivers powerful new sounds and textures. Legacy Cell provides 256 wonderful-sounding programs complete with all controller assignments. Korgs highly respected sound designers have created programs that match classic Korg sound quality to todays music scene. For the insert and master effects, you can choose from 19 effect algorithms that Korg has refined through many years of development. Legacy Cell has native support for the separately sold microKONTROL Studio MIDI Controller with its many sliders, encoders and pads, you can completely control the most important aspects of your sounds. WAVESTATION The WAVESTATION synthesizer appeared in 1990 with its new advanced vector synthesis system which enabled mixing between four oscillators and introduced Wave Sequencing for creating evolving rhythmic or melodic patterns. It opened up a revolutionary new world of sound and is still considered a must-have for any serious synthesist. The WAVESTATION software synthesizer provides all 484 waveforms and 55 effects found on the WAVESTATION series, with 32 digital oscillators and filters, 64 envelope generators, and 64 LFOs that allow letter-perfect replication of the signature, three-dimensional WAVESTATION sound. While faithful to the original, new features such as editing multiple steps of a Wave Sequence at once and a snap command to link Wave Sequence step lengths to MIDI clock truly bring the WAVESTATION into the modern world!

EFFECTS AND MORE! The MS-20FX lets you use the MS-20 as an effect processor, running audio into its filter and modulation capabilities. In addition, MDE-X makes the 19 effects provided by Legacy Cell available as plug-ins for your production needs. STAND-ALONE AND PLUG-IN OPERATION All of these software synthesizers can be used in stand-alone form. These same software synths plus the MS-20FX and MDE-X effects can also be used as VST/ Audio Units plug-in instruments within a compatible host application. Legacy runs on both Windows XP and Mac OS X including the hot new Tiger 10.4. All software is optimized for the Apple G4 Velocity Engine and Intel Pentium 4 SSE2 to obtain maximum performance.

M1: THE RETURN OF A CLASSIC Without a doubt, the highlight of the KLC-Digital Edition is the return of the classic M1. Back in 1988, the original M1 created the workstation category and went on to become one of the top selling keyboards of all time, easily surpassing an amazing 100,000 users. It was the first synthesizer to combine PCM waveforms and digital effects to deliver fully complete sounds from the famous M1 Piano to its wonderfully evocative synth textures, the sound of the M1 was taken up by musicians and producers around the world, and is still in use today. The M1 software synthesizer reconstructs the M1s sound engine into an eight-part multi-timbral tone generator featuring up to 256 notes of polyphony. WE HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY The M1 software synthesizer provides numerous new functions that were often requested for the original M1. At the top of the list are variable filter resonance and VDA modulation, greatly increasing your sound creation possibilities. The original M1 featured two effect processors; this new software incarnation boasts two insert effects for each of the eight multi-timbral parts, including a new compressor! Add two master effects and thats eighteen simultaneous effects for greater processing capabilities. Taking advantage of the computers display, the M1 software synthesizer features a completely redesigned interface that emphasizes ease of operation. Many parameters can be seen at once, and critical parameters can be displayed graphically. A SOURCE FOR SOUNDS The M1 software synthesizer is absolutely crammed with sounds. All of the PCM, Program, and Combination data found in the original M1 and the M1EX internal PCM expansion is included, plus the complete PCM, Program and Combination data from all nineteen optional ROM cards. In addition, newly created PCM drum sounds, Programs and Combinations that are ideal for contemporary music production are included.

WAVESTATION 1.5 In 1990, the remarkable WAVESTATION introduced the world to both Advanced Vector Synthesis and Wave Sequencing. Advanced Vector Synthesis used programmable repeating figures as well as real-time input from the Vector Joystick to constantly mix and morph between oscillators to create evolving tones and textures. The second innovation was Wave Sequencing, which steps the sound through a list of different waveforms in order to create rhythmic or ever-shifting patterns. In 2004, the original Korg Legacy Collection introduced the WAVESTATION software synthesizer. It faithfully recreated the distinctive sound of the WAVESTATION, while adding a graphic editor that offered new intuitive ways to visualize and unlock the programming potential of this great instrument. The WAVESTATION Version 1.5 software synthesizer opens new sound programming territory, providing more than 1,400 sounds plus a massive collection of additional PCM waveforms and Wave Sequences. All of the PCM data, Patches and Performances contained in the six long sought after optional ROM cards more than 250 Performances, 250 Patches, 250 PCM waveforms and 150 Wave Sequences is included with this collection.

MDE-X VERSION 1.2 MDE-X is the superb multi-effect plug-in first introduced in the Korg Legacy Collection. Featuring a low CPU drain design, MDE-X Version 1.2 provides nineteen high quality effect types, derived from the technical innovation and research behind Korgs Digital Recorders, TRITON synthesizers, and effects processors. Equipped with 128 immediately useful and editable effect programs, the MDE-X v1.2 is ready to satisfy all your processing needs, including sound design, recording, mixdown sessions even live performance!

JORDAN RUDESS

ARCHITECT OF SYNTH LORE

Pictured: Jordan Rudess photographed in New York, NY By Jerry Kovarsky, Jennifer Plonski & Laura Whitmore Photo by Keith Smith Being a believer in technology and the fact that these instruments are so powerful, I was really looking for something like the OASYS, states Jordan Rudess, the acclaimed keyboard wizard of Dream Theater. Known for his masterfully fast and expressive keyboard technique, Rudess wont waste time with an instrument that cant keep up to his demanding standards. But wait. We jump ahead. As a protg of the piano, Rudess immersed himself in the classical world. It was during his training at Juilliard that his eyes were opened to the innumerable stylistic opportunities that awaited him. Today Rudess takes the helm of his keyboard rig night after night for an agile, jaw-dropping and frankly loud, note-laden extravaganza with Dream Theater, the lords of progressive, driving instrumental rock. Here we talk with Jordan about his introduction to his first instrument, the piano, and to his ultimate instrument, the Korg OASYS >>

BX-3/CX-3 Combo Organs

CX-3

THE REAL THING

For years, if you wanted the sound of a real tone-wheel organ, there was only one instrument that could deliver until now. Korg Combo Organs accurately and faithfully re-create that classic sound in two portable models the single manual CX-3 and dual-manual BX-3.

METICULOUS RE-CREATION OF THE TONE-WHEEL SYSTEM Korgs state-of-the-art DSP technology has made it possible to precisely re-create all the unique characteristics of this venerable instrument. Two different tone-wheel sounds are provided: Vintage and Clean. The CX/BX-3s amazing realism even extends to such details as allowing you to add the leakage noise generated by the tone-wheels and the ability to adjust their overtone levels. DRAWBARS THE BACKBONE OF THE ORGAN SOUND The CX/BX-3 feature two sets of nine drawbars that duplicate the sonic characteristics of the originals including the proper foldback settings and harmonic distortion. And you can easily select between the presets and these two sets of live drawbars while performing for that real organ-playing experience. The CX/BX-3 also provide an EX mode in which all 18 drawbars can be utilized as one extended palette. ProView: Lets start at the beginning. When did you start playing music, and what first motivated you? Jordan Rudess: I started when I was seven years old. My second grade teacher called up my mother to tell her how beautifully I was playing the piano in the classroom. At the time we did not own a piano in our house, so my mother was very surprised to learn of this! The next week she bought a piano and I started taking lessons. My parents were advised to get me more serious musical training, so they found an intense Hungarian woman teacher who then prepared me for my audition to The Juilliard School of Music at the age of nine. All through my Juilliard years while I was learning classical music, I was also playing popular songs, as my mother loved to bring home the sheet music to Broadway shows and have me play for friends and at parties. I also discovered the Beatles and started secretly jamming and improvising in the Juilliard practice rooms! P: What first brought you into to the world of rock and progressive rock? J: When I was 17 my friends started to expose me to progressive rock. Bands like ELP, Genesis, YES and King Crimson. Hearing ELPs Tarkus specifically gave me the understanding that there was quite a lot of sonic power possible as a rock keyboardist. It was after hearing Patrick Moraz soloing on the Refugee album that I knew I had to have a Minimoog. This is when my world began to change! It became clear to me that my future involved
not only playing piano, but also working with sound creation and a new form of control. I felt that there was so much more for my hands to control in the world of synthesizers and this awareness led me away from the classical music path. So I started to look around and think, How can I get back to what I used to do? Because even though it was kind of fun, it was also sort of complicated. Being a believer in technology and the fact that these instruments are so powerful, I was really looking for something like the OASYS. When I heard about it, I knew that it would be something for me. So really from the moment that it was mentioned to me, I thought it might be the answer to everything. The OASYS is capable of everything that I need. So I basically sold all the gear that I was using on tour, and now I use an OASYS as my main instrument.

EXTENSIVE MIDI FEATURES Not limited to a vintage recreation, the CX/BX-3 are equipped with many advanced MIDI features. Every drawbar, switch and control can be transmitted as MIDI data, so your complete performance can be perfectly captured by a sequencer. The CX/BX-3 keyboard can be set to transmit key dynamics via MIDI to an external device that can even be layered with the onboard organ sound. The BX-3 adds Pitch Bend and Modulation Wheels for superb MIDI controller possibilities. A CLASSIC PLAYING EXPERIENCE A newly-designed waterfall keybed has been added for an absolutely authentic look and feel, and the BX-3s matching wooden stand pays homage to the original. Drawbars, vibrato/chorus, and percussion switches are placed in the same location as on the classic tone-wheel organs, demonstrating a total commitment to tradition and playability. Different sets of drawbars and Chorus/Vibrato On/Off can be assigned independently to each manual, just like using a real tone-wheel organ. The single manual CX-3 gives you this functionality via a Split Mode, enabling you to play the single keyboard in two sections. Or you can plug in a second MIDI keyboard to re-create the dual manual playing experience.

P: Did Dream Theater give you much room to inject yourself into their more established pieces of music? J: I try to respect the parts that I feel are important to the music that was created before I joined the group. Certain synthesizer sounds that might be considered dated now were a big part of the songs originally created and totally what people remember. When there is a section that to me simply needs to be updated, because the technology did not exist back then to do what they were trying to do, then I will change it. A good example of this might be when the keyboardist was trying to create a choir or string sound, but did not have the samples that we have access to now! P: Youve recently simplified your rig by paring it down to one main instrument. What first attracted you to the Korg OASYS? J: I was looking for an instrument that would allow me to do everything that I want to do without having to use multiple keyboards, multiple modules because I really come from a background of performing on one powerful instrument. And what happened with me and Dream Theater is that things got a little bit out of hand.

PERCUSSION / KEY-CLICK EFFECTS ADD CHARACTER The CX/BX3 re-create the all-important sound of a slightly dirty contact (key click, adjustable for both note on and off) and the classic percussion effect beautifully. The volume, decay rate and harmonic pitch (2nd, 3rd) of the percussion can be adjusted and the percussion has the proper multi-triggered-yet-monophonic characteristic for authentic organ performance. CLASSIC SOUNDS AND MORE With 128 programs, the CX/BX-3 are ready to cover a wide range of musical styles including pop, hard rock, jazz, gospel, and rhythm and blues. Detailed drawbar and parameter settings are displayed and can be easily edited and stored. Included are a number of signature artist programs created by some of the worlds top organists. Careful attention has been paid to emulate the fast playing action of an organ as well. The adjustable key scanning method used on the CX/BX-3 starts the sound at the first key contact, ensuring a much faster response to your playing. REALISTIC ROTARY SPEAKER AND SPATIAL EFFECTS Korgs proprietary REMS modeling technology delivers a totally realistic and nuanced rotary speaker effect, so important to the organ experience. Three types of amp simulation are provided: a traditional rotary speaker sound, a blend of rotary and tube amp sounds, or a preamp-only signal. In addition, the classic vibrato and chorus settings are provided along with four reverbs, featuring adjustable time and depth.

P: What features of the OASYS made you confident that you could get rid of all of those other instruments? J: Well, its a combination of things. Its the extreme amount of polyphony, its the large amount of sample RAM. Its the fact that you can layer up to 16 different programs or sounds in a combination. My whole thing is about doing lots of complicated layers and splits on the keyboard, and the OASYS lets you do it in 16 zones, so for me that is amazing. The effects processor in the OASYS is so amazing that I can have all my organs and my pianos and my symphonic sounds, and everything can sound at once and be in their own environment. Theres more! SOUNDBYTES BEHIND BARS

By Angela Prout Fresh off a tour with Mindless Self Indulgence, Josie Outlaw of The A.K.A.s took some time to offer us a little insight into her own not-so-mindless indulgences, first and foremost: her music. Josie was booking bands at local fire halls when she was just fifteen years old. After graduating high school she began taking lessons, and her big break came only a few months later when The A.K.A.s needed a keyboard player for their opening spot on the Anti-Flag tour. Equipped with a thorough understanding of the band since its conception, though no actual music experience, Josie boldly took the gig. I worked really hard to get it together. My first show ever was in front of over 1200 people, total gun to the head style, she reveals. Josie obviously won that round of Russian roulette and has been playing with The A.K.A.s ever since. Throughout her musical endeavors Ms. Outlaw has found solace in Korg products, and most recently the microKORG. She explains, I think that the reason I fell in love with it was because it had all the sounds that I wanted in a small setup it has all the features of a full-sized keyboard in half the size. It has a great bank of sounds that you can tweak to make your own, unique and individualized. Read more of Josies story online at www.korg.com/JosieOutlaw

Concert Pianos

THE MODERN ART OF MAKING MUSIC

The all new Korg C-Series concert pianos combine advances in sound, touch and design into a feast for all the senses.

A REALLY NICE DAY

by Angela Prout Bon Jovis day got a little brighter not long ago when keyboardist Jeff Kazee of Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes agreed to join Bon Jovi for their Have a Nice Day tour. Kazee, an extraordinary keyboardist in his own right, has been playing with the Jukes since 1998 and over the years has developed a fond relationship with Jon Bon Jovi, as the front man has frequented Southside Johnny shows for years. I was brought on to kind of expand their live performance, Jeff reveals. In addition to contributing to the keyboard side of things, Jeff will handle extra back up vocals. Accompanying Jeff on his endeavors with the band will be none other than his own trusty sideman, the TRITON Extreme Music Workstation. Jeff tells us about his attraction to the instrument, I needed a keyboard that I could use to create textures that fit in well with acoustic instruments, that were real organic, and that I could program easily on the fly. I had been using and checking out the TRITON Extreme, and it just seemed to fit that mold. I took it on the road, and I did a live record with it. It sounded great it just really worked. The versatility is excellent its just a great total keyboard. If all my keyboards went down and I just had the TRITON Extreme, I know I could get through a gig. It is really a lifesaver for me. Find out more about Jeff and his experience with Bon Jovi at www.korg.com/JeffKazee

THE PIANO EXPERIENCE While existing piano sampling techniques have resembled an audio snapshot, our new Piano eXPerience technology is more of a hologram, accurately reproducing every dimensional detail of the sound. All piano sampling for the C-Series is done in stereo to preserve the natural imaging of the sound. Different dynamic levels are captured to extend the instruments expressive vocabulary. This attention to detail defines the sound of the new C-Series models, providing an instrument that can interpret every nuance of touch into a meaningful musical gesture. The C-520 goes even further, using the sound of the key being released and the hammer returning, as well as the sympathetic damper resonance of the strings to create all of the subtle shadings that create a superior instrument sound. PIANO IS JUST THE BEGINNING While great care has gone into creating such a satisfying piano experience, piano is just the beginning. Harpsichord and clavinets, organs, electric pianos and dozens of other sounds are also available. Thirty sounds are arranged into three banks of ten for easy access on the C-320. The C-520 adds an additional bank for a total of forty sounds. Two sounds can be used together for a layered performance. The C-520 adds a split function for playing sounds in separate areas of the keyboard. To further enhance the sound, you can add adjustable levels of reverb and chorus. The C-520 adds a per-sound Insert Effect, which can greatly add to the character of each sound, even when layering and splitting. RESPONSIVE PIANO ACTION Both pianos feature Korgs newest ultra-responsive RH3 graded hammer action; weighted and balanced like a true grand piano, the keys are progressively lighter toward the upper end of the keyboard. In addition, the response of the keyboard can be adjusted to suit the players taste. The C-320 offers three touch settings;

the C-520 includes eight velocity curves, plus a fixed level setting for authentic harpsichord and organ performances. The C-Series has three pedals including half-pedaling response for the damper and soft pedals for an even more authentic performance. A convenient folding music rest is provided.

EASY ON THE EYES AND EARS A pleasure to play, a pleasure to hear, the C-320 and C-520 reflect improvements in cabinetry and design that make them a pleasure to look at as well. Both models feature a sliding cover to protect the keyboard when not in use. The cabinetry is characterized by graceful curves and accents, adding a refined look. Available in both traditional dark rosewood and a casual light cherry finish, the pianos are designed to blend with any dcor. The front panel controls are understated and uncluttered, and LED indicators provide visual feedback of the current settings. Concealed in this artistic presentation is a powerful internal sound system. The C-320 houses a pair of 13 cm full-range speakers powered by a pair of 20 Watt amplifiers. The larger system in the C-520 is housed in an internal bass reflex chamber for additional punch, with a pair of 3.5 cm tweeters for increased clarity, all powered by 35 Watt amplifiers. ESSENTIAL EXTRAS The C-Series pianos can be transposed into any musical key, and two historical temperaments are provided. The metronome is adjustable and provides a

reliable aid for rhythmic practicing. MIDI in and out ports are available for interfacing with a computer or other MIDI-equipped musical products. Audio outputs allow the pianos to be connected to a sound system or recording device perfect for schools and worship services. Two headphone outputs are provided for silent practice or teacher and student privacy.

DOUBLE DUTY
By Kenny Kuehn Everyone has heard the saying, practice makes perfect, right? But are your practice sessions often tedious and dull? Well, theres good news. Practice no longer has to be boring when you use the ToneWorks PX4D Multi Effects Processor. Just ask bassist/recording artist Joe Ayoub. I love the PX4D! exclaims Joe. I use it for practice on the tour bus while Im on the road. I hook up my iPod, so I can learn tunes or play along with them, all with this unit. I can totally do it in my bunk on the bus. Its great! And Joe knows what hes talking about. Whether hes acting as a sideman or leading his own band, Joe brings the goods. Hes won two Downbeat magazine awards, achieved acclaim for his work on several commercials, and has worked with artists such as Tyler Hilton, Marvin Sapp, and currently, Liz Phair. As an accomplished bassist and guitar player, the PX4D further satisfies Joes needs. He explains, To have all the bass and guitar sounds in one unit is awesome. Ive never seen anything that does half of what the PX4D does. Its so useful; Im all about it. Find out more about whats up with Joe Ayoub at www.korg.com/JoeAyoub

D888 [new]

Digital Recording Studio

D3200 Digital Recording Studio

SUPERIORITY
DOES NOT NEED TO BE

COMPLEX
Once again, Korg expands the boundaries of personal recorders and professional results. First in its class to offer 12 tracks of simultaneous 16 or 24-bit recording, the D3200 Digital Recording Studio delivers powerful and sophisticated studio functionality in a compact, self-contained and portable package. With a 69-bit automated digital mixer, 56-bit effect processing, and your choice of CD-quality 44.1 kHz or enhanced 48 kHz recording rates, the D3200 delivers consistently high-quality results and uncompromising audio clarity.

EIGHT INPUTS, EIGHT OUTPUTS, EIGHT TRACKS OF RECORDING

The user-friendly presentation of the D888 is familiar to anyone who has ever sat in front of a traditional analog mixer. Yet lurking inside this eight input/eight output digital mixer is a complete eight track digital recorder.

tracks together digitally with no fidelity loss to free up more tracks. The entire mix can be bounced down to the stereo Master Track. In fact, you can make as many final mixes as you want and then choose the best one. All tracks are saved as WAV format files, for easy sharing with other recording systems. Non-destructive editing tools point to the power of the recorder section, allowing you to copy entire sections of the song, swap tracks, erase, etc. Undo and Redo commands allow you to hear both the before and after versions of any edit before you commit to any changes. In addition to regular recording, punch in and punch out recording allows precise overdubbing and fixing any sour notes. The internal 40GB hard drive allows a maximum total recording time of over 120 hours. For ease of use, the recorder section uses traditional transport controls. A backlit LCD provides metering and other pertinent information.

NEW RECORDING FRONTIERS The new D888 Digital Recording Studio goes where no digital recorder has gone before. Its intuitive, real-time design assures immediate results. At home, the D888 provides an intuitive mixer layout that accommodates your sound modules and instruments one where you can record whenever the mood strikes you. Lightweight and portable, the D888 is also perfect as a live or location capture recorder for recording band rehearsals and gigs and other applications. In the field, the versatile input and output sections allow the D888 to record on location without interfering with the P.A. systems house mix. The output section is also ideal for feeding into a cue mixer, a larger recording system, or other audio applications. Back in the home studio, tracks can easily be transferred between the D888 and a computer-based editing/recording environment thanks to native WAV format recording. A high speed USB 2.0 jack moves the data quickly, with the entire hard drive showing up as a mounted disk on your desktop. The MIDI output transmits MIDI Time Code so other equipment can sync up to the D888.

MIXER MASQUERADE The D888 offers an interface like no other digital recorder. As with a traditional analog mixer, each channel has its own channel strip, complete with trim, 3-band EQ, effect send, and pan controls each element offering its own dedicated real-time knob. This allows a quick check of the current mixer settings by simply glancing at the knobs. The Mic inputs provide both XLR and TRS balanced inputs, and phantom power is available. This thoughtful arrangement allows a wide variety of sources to be connected for additional flexibility. High-quality mic preamps are teamed with professional A/D converters for excellent sound. Throughout, the mixer uses 40-bit, 44.1 kHz processing for a clean audio signal that surpasses CD quality. The eight individual output arrangement is incredibly versatile, allowing the D888 to be the perfect choice in many audio situations. In the Individual Mode, each output is directly tied to a particular channel. With the Individual Mode off, outputs 1 & 2 become the Monitor outputs, and outputs 3 & 4 serve as the Master outputs. A digital S/P DIF output is also provided. Each of the two headphone outputs is thoughtfully equipped with its own level control. NO CONVERSION WAV FORMAT RECORDING All eight tracks can be recorded or played back simultaneously. Eight virtual tracks exist for each track, bringing the total track count to 64. You can bounce

EFFECTS AT YOUR FINGERTIPS Eleven different effect types are provided and are instantly selectable from the front panel. Each channel has its own send knob, and a global return knob allows you to set just the right mix. In keeping with the D888s real-time approach, effect parameters are also editable from a dedicated front panel knob. And of course, the effect settings are memorized with each song. An internal metronome is provided. The metronome can be sent from Master and Monitor outputs, or just the Monitor outs alone, so musicians can follow a click-track during recording or performance.

NEW TOOLS YOU CAN USE Intuitive ease-of-use is one of the hallmarks of Korg recorders, and the D3200 is no exception. The 320 x 240 LCD panel tilts up for comfortable viewing at any angle and features four levels of grayscale to provide enhanced resolution to the icon driven displays. Our exclusive ClickPoint controller is hard to describe, but a breeze to use. Sort of a 3-axis stationary trackball, you can whip the cursor around the display and select an item in a single gesture, or use it as a jog/shuttle wheel when scrubbing through an audio passage. PX4D Personal Multi-Effect Processor PX4A Acoustic Personal Multi-Effect Processor

LUKE REYNOLDS of Blue Merle

COMPACT AND POWERPACKED

PX4D
Two new models join the acclaimed Pandora series of versatile, pocket-sized units: the dual-purpose PX4D for guitar and bass, and the PX4A for electric-acoustic guitar.

[Actual Size]

THE PX4D IS THE ULTIMATE PRACTICE TOOL Packed with authentic amp models, a wealth of effects, rhythms, bass patterns and a phrase trainer, the PX4D will become an indispensable tool in your arsenal. From high-end tube amps to rare vintage amps and classic favorites, the PX4Ds 25 amp types faithfully model the amp sounds that guitarists and bassists seek. Each of the 23 speaker cabinet models was newly created especially for the PX4D. The permutations are limitless you can even combine a guitar amp with a bass cabinet. In addition to standards such as compressor and wah, there are numerous modeling effects. Pickup modeling transforms the sound of single-coil pickups into that of humbucking pickups (or vice versa), guitar and bass synths let you play synth sounds, a slow attack effect creates violin-type swells, a feedback effect allows feedback playing techniques that are normally possible only at high volumes, a fretless bass effect simulates the distinctive sound of a fretless bass, and many more. These effects can be utilized to their fullest with the PX4Ds generous 100 preset and 100 user programs. THE PX4A IS OPTIMIZED FOR ACOUSTIC SOUNDS Created especially for electric-acoustic players, the PX4A contains 82 effects including Body effects that model the resonances and vibrational character of great acoustic guitars. Aspects such as guitar construction and body size are modeled in painstaking detail for numerous guitars. Today, many acoustic guitars are equipped with piezo transducers. Unfortunately, the direct sound from piezo pickups can tend to have a sterile character, but the PX4As effects add the distinctive warmth of resonating wood that is typical of an acoustic guitar, producing an extremely rich and natural sound.

PX4A

The effects of the PX4A extend beyond the conventional boundaries of the electric-acoustic guitar to include models for resonator guitar, a newly developed banjo and nylon-string guitar you can play a wide variety of acoustic sounds using just a single instrument. There are also mic effects that simulate the sense of space and depth achieved by micing an instrument. There are numerous other effects, ranging from standards such as compressor, limiter, echo, delay, reverb, and chorus, through distinctive effects such as a twelve-string effect that reproduces the sound of a twelve-string guitar. The PX4A has a Notch effect that helps to curtail the feedback (howling) that can be a problem for amplified acoustic instruments. The PX4A provides 50 user programs and 50 preset programs that cover a broad range of styles, including sounds of famous artists.

PLAY ALONG WITH ANOTHER AUDIO SOURCE Connect a CD player or another external audio source to the AUX IN jack, and use the Key Transpose function to change the pitch of the song upward or downward by as much as one octave. The PX4D also contains a Bass Canceller function that erases the bass sound from an external audio source so that you can play and hear your bass along with the song. SUPERB VISIBILITY A backlit, semitransparent LCD clearly displays effect and programs names and icons. A strap holder is also provided so that you can attach it directly to your instrument strap.

If you are unfamiliar with Blue Merle, who better than its guitarist/vocalist to bring you up to speed. Were a five-piece band full of incredibly well-rounded and well-versed musicians, describes Luke. Its very much American music drawing from all the genres that had a huge affect on us, like Americana, jazz, classical, and rock. There are some pretty eclectic instruments as well, with the mandolin and double bass along with the violin and piano. Were a song band with a high level of energy, and were just into great, great songs.
