Lesson Plan Field Trip Teacher: Emma Gustafson Grade Level- Prek- 3 Objectives- Children will learn about animals out of the classroom in an interactive way. The student will be able to learn about an interesting type of animal- bugs. The children will also experience the science while learning about bugs. Motivation The motivation is to teach children science in a fun and interactive way. The animal theme will keep their attention. Also being able to experience the science hands on will be interesting for the students. Materials Procedure 1. Discuss the topic of bugs to the children and explain to them that the class will be taking a field trip in a few days to a bug exhibit to learn and see bugs in their habitat. 2. In the days leading up to the field trip the class will learn and discuss about bugs to prepare them for the exhibit. The class will also discuss proper behavior while on the field trip. 3. On the day of the trip children will be broken up into groups with a parent or teacher as their leader. In groups the children will go and learn about different bugs at the different exhibits. 4. The next day in class the teacher will present a cocoon in a cage for the students to see. weeks they will watch the progression of the cocoon that will eventually turn into a butterfly. Adaption for special needs For Ashlyn (hearing impaired): This activity is a good fit for Ashlyn however at the exhibit it would be helpful to give Ashlyn headphones to listen what they are viewing so she can understand better. The headphones should be offered to all the children if he or she prefers to listen to the headphones. For Jackson (Motor skills problems): During the field trip Jackson should not been any additional special adaptations. The teacher or parent aid should be aware and offer assistance to him if there is something in the exhibit that he may need help with. On the field trip it is important that the teachers and aids make sure the children are retaining the important information they need to learn. Variations/ Other possibilities The children could also view the entire zoo if the teacher wishes to broaden the particular lesson. Also, if transportation to the zoo is too difficult or costly the class could bring in a guest speaker that could show the children the different types of bugs.
