Inner Discipline Behavior Management Plan (adapted from Effective Classroom Management: Models & Strategies for Todays Classroom, 3rd edition, Hardin) The Inner Discipline Behavior Management Plan is implemented as a proactive way to complement the Franklin Academy point system. The theory, developed by Coloroso, sees the primary role of the teacher as to guide students to make their own decisions and take responsibility for their choices. It is more concerned with having students think about their behaviors and how their behaviors impact others than with providing traditional punishments and consequences for inappropriate behavior. As per the school-wide point system, points will continue to be deducted for inappropriate behavior. However, the focus beyond the point deduction will be meaningful reflection on the impact of inappropriate behavior. The Inner Discipline model is based on three key concepts: 1. Development of inner discipline is more important than traditional classroom control. 2. Problem solving is key to developing inner discipline. 3. Students must be taught how to think, not what to think. Life Messages to Students o I believe in you. o I trust you. o I know you can handle this class, and the associated responsibilities. o You are listened to. o You are cared for. o You and your education are very important to me. Supporting Principles for Students o I like myself. o I can think for myself. o There is no problem so great that it cannot be solved. Classroom Rules o Show up on time. o Be prepared. o Complete assignments. o Respect your life space and the life spaces of others. Reconciliatory Justice o Restitution: If you break it, fix it. o Resolution: Identify the steps to prevent the situation from happening again. o Reconciliation: Healing the hurt caused by the event so that all parties can heal.

Use of the Franklin Academy Point System Per our school-wide discipline system, points will be deducted from student agendas for violations within the school environment. Please note that points will be taken at the teachers discretion. The following are important deductions that will be enforced in accordance with school guidelines: Point Deductions -5 points Immediate Office Referral Examples of Infractions Dress Code Violation Tardy to class Unprepared Out of position Talking out of turn Not having a pass Gum/Candy in class Disrespect (first time)includes interrupting the teacher; being disrespectful to classmates Disruptive behavior (first time)any behavior that distracts from learning activities; students being off-task and/or doing work for another class Poor Substitute Behaviormisbehaving when a substitute teacher is present. Grading Policy Grades will be updated in RenWeb routinely as assignments are graded. A in RenWeb indicates that a student was Absent and is expected to make up the assignment E in RenWeb indicates that the student is Excused from the assignment; the grade will not be averaged with his/her average P in RenWeb indicates that the grade is Pending, the work has been received by the teacher and a grade will be added shortly M in RenWeb indicates that the assignment is Missing. Ms are assigned as followed: o If a student has turned in the work, but has an M listed for a grade he/she may not have put their name on the assignment. In this case, the student needs to check the No Name Folder located on the teachers shelf. o The student did not turn in the assignment. Please see below for make-up work/late work policy. I in RenWeb indicates that the assignment was turned in but is Incomplete. Please see below for make-up work/late work policy. 0 in RenWeb indicates that the student received a zero for the assignment. Once issued, this grade will not be changed. Cheating and/or Plagiarism Cheating and Plagiarism of any kind will not be tolerated. Per school policy, the first incidence of cheating will result in an automatic grade of zero on the assignment/project/test. In addition, any communication (either verbal or non-verbal) during an individual assessment constitutes cheating and will result in an immediate zero. Any further incidences of cheating will result in immediate suspension from school. Make-Up Work/Late Work Make-Up Work: Per school policy, students who are absent will have one school day for every day out of school to make up work. Late Work: Per school policy, work turned in one day late will receive a maximum grade of an 80%. Work turned in two days late or more will receive a maximum grade of a 50%. Students have three (3) school days from the due date of an assignment to turn it in for credit. After three days it will become a permanent zero. Extra Credit Policy Extra credit assignments are not offered. Students need to be mindful of this when completing assignments and studying for assessments. Class Participation If you do not dress out, you will receive a grade of zero for your participation grade unless you have an approved parent or physician note. Notes will not be accepted after the fact. Class participation is defined as the active engagement of the student at all times throughout the lesson. Active engagement involves paying attention to teacher directed instruction, sharing thoughtful ideas, listening respectfully to classmates as they share ideas, and working constructively within the class. Students are expected to be present and active within all classroom activities every day. Excuse Notes If a student needs to be excused from physical education for 3 or more days, a written note from a physician is required (parents can write a note for up to two days only). Once a student has been excused from physical education for one week due to medical reasons, a written note from a physician is required to resume participation.
